Reasons to locate in Missouri

• Missouri’s proximity to the wind corridor and major OEMs ensures efficient access to vendors and customers-– In addition to Nordic Windpower, which decided to relocate its

operations to Missouri in 2010, OEMs near Missouri include Clipper, Acciona, Nordex, Siemens, and Suzlon.

– The top 20 states for existing wind capacity include Missouri as well as 4 of its neighboring states. Missouri and surrounding states have a combined existing capacity of 8,976 MW—more than 22% of the U.S. total current wind power capacity.

• Missouri’s extensive transportation system is a dependable delivery system for goods and services.

– Missouri has some of the best and least congested transportation infrastructure in the United States. It has the 7th largest highway system, two of the largest rail terminals in the U.S., the northern-most ice-free ports and the southernmost lock and dam on the Mississippi river, and two major commercial airports.

Advancing Renewables in the Midwest

• Missouri’s aggressive renewable portfolio standard and wind energy potential ensure a growing market for wind manufacturers

– Missouri currently ranks 17th for wind power capacity, with 6 wind farms that generate 457 MW.

– Missouri’s Renewable Energy Standard, a citizen-initiated state statute passed in 2008, requires that utility companies increase usage of renewable energy to 15% by 2021.

• A low-cost, pro-business environment helps companies prosper.

– Missouri had the 10th lowest industrial electricity rates in 2010 and the 3rd lowest business energy costs overall in 2010.

– Missouri is among the top ten pro-business states, according to PollinaCorporate Real Estate.

– Missouri has the 5th lowest corporate income tax rate in the U.S.– Missouri has the 7th best regulatory environment according to Forbes.– Missouri has the 9th lowest unemployment insurance tax rate and the

11th lowest property tax rate in the U.S according to the Tax Foundation.

• Ample supply of highly educated, low-cost labor

– More than 3,000 Engineering degrees are awarded each year in the state.

– Missouri’s labor force exceeds the entire populations of 20 states, including neighboring Kansas, Arkansas, Iowa, and Nebraska.

– Nearly 10% of Missouri’s workforce is currently employed in manufacturing.

– Missouri ranks 5th in the U.S. for low business costs including labor.

Advancing Renewables in the Midwest

• Specialized Programs in Alternative Energy at Missouri Colleges and Universities: • International Center for Advanced Renewable Energy and Sustainability at Washington

University: • The International Center for Advanced Renewable Energy and Sustainability (I-CARES) was

created in June 2007 to encourage and coordinate University-wide and external collaborative research on energy, environment, and sustainability that cannot be done by single investigators or by single disciplines alone. I-CARES fosters research on:

– the development and production of biofuels from plant and microbial systems; – the exploration of sustainable alternative energy; and – the exploration of environmental systems and practices.

• Southeast Missouri State University offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Technology Management with a Sustainable Energy Systems Management specialization. The program curriculum focuses on energy efficiency and conservation, energy sustainability, renewable energy, and carbon footprint management of industrial, commercial, light-commercial, and residential “systems”.

• North Central Missouri College has a wind technician program.• Missouri S&T Energy Research and Development Center, U of MO Center for sustainable

Energy, Wash U has the only dept. of energy, environmental and chemical engineering, and Crowder college Degree
