PRESERVING THE PASTEFFORTS TO SAVE A HAWAI‘I LANDMARK GAIN GROUND
A visitor strolling along O‘ahu’s Kaimana Beach on a Friday evening might hear the surprising sound of bagpipes—and be led by the music to a significant monument to Hawai‘i history: the nearby Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium (shown above). Built to honor more than 10,000 World War I servicemen from Hawai‘i, the natatorium is a combination memorial and saltwater swim-ming pool (the pool is currently closed to the public). In recent years, the local nonprofit Friends of the Natatorium has been
building support for full restoration of the pool. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named the site a National Treasure in 2014, and restoration proponents are optimistic that the landmark can be a thriving center of activity for future genera-tions—one that also honors the past.
