Committee Positions Available Fundraising Co-ordinator

Are you a born organizer? Do you love planning fun events??

Albany Creek Scout Group is in need of someone who loves to plan and implement the much needed fundraising activities for our youth sections and group. With Cuboree approaching and much needed equipment and repair work, we need someone who can take an idea, run with it and make each venture a success.

All you will need is:

A never say die attitude

Flair for organising

One Thursday night a month (committee meeting)

Please email [email protected] if you think you are the one!

Maintenance Co-ordinator

Do you know one end of a hammer from the other? Know a thing or two about handywork?

We need someone to oversee and organise some of the maintenance work around the den. You don’t need a lot of experience, just a willingness to pitch in and make sure work is done!

Key elements of this position are:

Keeping note of items requiring maintenance

Assisting to organise working bee’s (once per term)

One Thursday night per month (committee meeting)

Please email [email protected] if you can help out!

Den Dinners

We are holding Den Dinners again commencing Term 2! This is a great opportunity to connect with other families in the group and share a meal.

Thank you to Lisa Duke and Robyn Sibley who have volunteered for the first dinner.

Please email [email protected] if you can assist by cooking a dinner during 2016!

Working Bee

Thank you to all the families and leaders who gave up a few hours of their time on Sunday 28th February to assist with our first working bee of the year! We have successfully taken care of quite a number of items however this was the tip of the iceberg!

We will be holding a working bee each term so that we can keep up with maintenance

SECTION UPDATE – Joey Scouts – BAGHEERA Belinda Warner Happy New Year and welcome back for 2016. Albany Creek Joey Scouts finished off 2015 with our “Weird Science” program doing some cool science experiments with Raksha. We were also lucky enough to go down to Eaton’s Hill Fire Station for a visit. The firefighters showed us through the station, let us climb through the truck, don some firefighting gear and spray the fire hose over the back fence! A big thanks goes out to everyone at the Fire Station.

Xavier shows us how it’s done.

Next came Halloween and we celebrated in our usual style of ghouls, ghosts, skeletons and plenty of blood! We munched on witches fingers, eyeballs of newt, mummy cupcakes and pukey pizza.

The whole “Ghoulish Gang”.

Our annual District Joey Sleepover was held at Lawnton Den in November and we visited the Roma Street Parklands. Joeys scoured the park finding items on their checklist and found birdlife, fish, rainforests, hundreds of different flowers, lizards and a train to ride on around the park. Of course, there was the “real” train ride to and from the Parklands to enjoy as well. At the den we enjoyed playing games, making craft and having a sleepover with all our friends.

Raksha, Cooper and Adam on the miniature train.

Last of all we celebrated Christmas by making Christmas presents, donating toys to needy children and playing games. The Group Christmas party was also on that week and so Christmas cheer was in abundance! In term four we welcomed lots of new friends – Welcome to Callum Eaglesham, Callum Fleming, Bailey Macdonald, Roman McKinnon, Max McGuinness and Samson Perks. At the beginning of this term we welcomed Cooper Chan. Last term we said goodbye to Adam Warner who completed his Promise Challenge badge and went up to Cub Scouts.

Aidan burns rubber on the billy carts.

In this current term we are earning our buddy badge and our buddies are Narangba Joey Scout Mob. We will be visiting them next month and then they will also come to our den to visit us for our Easter program. We have already attended our first big item on our scouting calendar – Founder’s Day. Fun was had by all as we “travelled the world” experiencing games and crafts from different lands. It was especially fun passing through Customs and Immigration (Bagheera), being entertained on board by our flight attendant (Raksha) and the dodgy flying of our Captain (Kirrang). The Joeys finished off a fun day with billy cart riding with the Cub Scouts, dinner together and campfire activities. Until next time, Bagheera, Raksha and Hawkeye.

SECTION UPDATE – Cub Scouts – CHIL Nathan Dobbins

Albany Creek

News February 2016 The cubs have started the year with a bang. We have almost 35 at the moment with 4 to be invested in the coming weeks. We have also done a Camp to Noosa with the help of 10 Parent helpers for without them the Camp could never achieved what we did. As some will know Malcom ( Kaa) has moved to Group Leader role and Rachael due to have her baby as soon as she gets to the shops for a Packet of Doritos we will have no choice but to bring back the parent helper roster. We would love to get another leader to help run the pack but understand that many can’t commit to the extra hours that Myself, Kerry, Alan & John put in to write programs. We understand this but there is another role that scouts does have that would help a lot. We need a Badge examiner. The kids love the achievement badges but it’s up to them to do them, but finding time in the program to lose a leader to go through what they have done will be hard. You aren’t required to be their every week, maybe once a fortnight would be a great start. We have got a lot to get done by the September school holidays when Most of our leaders including myself will be going to Cuboree. If you have any urgent questions please feel free to talk to myself whenever you see me free. Yours in Scouting Chil Nathan Dobbins CSL Albany Creek Scout group

SECTION UPDATE – Scouts – ECHIDNA Lynda Aldridge

2015 closed in style with a fantastic Christmas cook off at the Den. (Christmas Cook-off) Lillie undertook her Explorer Level Journey in the Southern Highlands. (Lililes Journey) 2016 started with the Australian Jamboree which was held from 3rd to 14th January, we had 18 Scouts and two leaders from Albany Creek fly down to Sydney to join Scouts at Cataract Park for an action packed 10 days of Adventure!

So far this month in their patrols scouts have been designing, building and racing their chariots in preparation for our annual Founders Day Field Gun Run which is held at Petrie Old town to celebrate the birthday of our Founder Baden Powell. March is another busy month for Scouts: we are helping our local platypus doing a river clean-up for Clean-up Australia day; Butterfly wide game challenge; practicing raft building for Raftarama which is a Regional raft building competition and race; going Rock-climbing and having a Campfire cook-off! And that’s just the beginning! Fun and Adventurous events to follow throughout the year are the Canoe Journeys; Rock climbing and abseiling at District Scout Camp; Environment Camp at Victoria Point, Triple S three-night competition camp, Tent pitching competition, leadership camps, Operation Nighthawk and Operation Knight Moves, Jota/Joti (Jamboree on the air and internet) Air Activities where scouts get to fly in Cesnas and Skillorama, not to mention the individual Scout Journeys and Patrol camps planned and organised by the Scouts!

SECTION UPDATE – Venturer Scouts – NITRO Tony Wright The Venturer Scout unit is poised for a fantastic year in 2016. We returned from the Christmas break and have linked up a number of scouts from the troop having completed their journey in the Scout section with attendance at the Australian Jamboree. We also welcomed a transfer from Bracken Ridge troop taking our unit numbers to 12 members. The Albany creek venturers have welcomed Dave Cooper into our unit from his stint as dsl. We have some exciting new things planned this term, in upcoming weeks we have a cooking competition night, a bike hike, construction.

SECTION UPDATE – Rover Scouts – Stuart Gorton

January 16-17 - As previously mentioned we farewelled Ashley from the Rover Crew. There was an overnight camp and a ceremony held at Murrenbong. Ashley will be missed by the Rovers dearly as she has contributed a lot to the crew

February 3 - At the beginning of the new term the Rovers had a fire cooking night. It was a fun night dispite rain putting it off by a week it was well worth the wait. The Rovers made Freddo Frog Damper which turned out very well. Everyone enjoyed the night. The same night Amelia, a new Rover was invested. It was a great night and all the Rovers thoroughly enjoyed it.

Page 6: ALBANY CREEK SCOUT GROUP NEWSLETTER ALBANY CREEK … · TERM 1 2016 Dates to Remember: Good Friday - Friday 25th March Term 2 resumes - Monday 11th April Den Dinner - Thursday 28th

February 17 - The Rovers had a bowling night at Strathpine Ten Pin Bowl. All the Rovers had a fun night and we had old rovers friends came to it as well.

February 20 - Three Rovers attended the annual Near North Coast and Country Region Founder’s Day Service at Old Petrie Town. Roughly 300 scouting members attended the huge event. There was a march around the town and activities for the youth members and the Rovers assisted with the sausage sizzle at the end of the event. While it was a tiring day it was an enjoyable event

GENERAL REMINDER TO ALL PARENTS As you will all be aware, it is Scouts Australia policy to sign your scouts in and out, both before and after each section meeting. This is so that our Section Leaders can account for each child left in their care at each meeting. Please ensure you are signing the sheet at the entrance to the Den. Please see your section leader if you have any concerns. On that note, please also note that your children are still under your care until they are called to parade. If you arrive to the Den early, please stay until parade so that the leaders can confirm that they have adequate numbers to supervise your children. Your children are also under your care immediately following parade, and must be signed out accordingly.

END THOUGHT

No other youth group like the Scouts has trained so many future leaders while at

the same time being a nature organization with its outdoor focus.
