Tuesday 13 October | Week 2, Term 4
WELCOME BACK TO TERM 4
Students have settled back into routines very quickly and staff are ready for what will be a very busy term ahead. This term is always a productive one and it always seems to go very quickly as we finish off programs, review our achievements and plan for next year.
Please note that The Department of Education’s COVID-19 Operating Guidelines for Schools remains largely unchanged. This means we will continue with our current measures including limiting access to our school site to adults, including parents. I thank our school community for their ongoing support of these measures.
2021 Enrolments It seems early to be talking about next year, but planning for 2021 is well underway. Ms Henderson has completed enrolment interviews for Prep children who are starting at our school next year and I thank her for all the time she has given to these important transition meetings. Children who were born between 1 July 2015 and 30 June 2016 are eligible to enrol in Prep next year.
If you know someone who is considering enrolling their child next year, please ask them to contact us as soon as possible. Similarly, if you know your child won’t be attending our school next year, please let us know. Accurate planning for next year is important to make sure we are well positioned to provide the best opportunities for your children.
Last Day of the 2020 School Year—Wednesday 9 December Please note that the last day of the school year has been confirmed by the Department of Education as Wednesday 9 December. Schools will be closed after this date. Our Outside School Hours Care service will be operating their vacation care program for families to access from Thursday 10 December.
Staying Active This week is a busy one:
We have the commencement of our 8 week water safety and swimming education program for students in Prep to Year 3.
The first of four Sport Gala Days will be held this Friday for students in Years 4 – 6 and I am sure our students will represent their school in the manner we expect.
Our Year 4 students are currently enjoying their bike safety activities at the Redcliffe PCYC.
Year 5 students are taking part in a range of leadership activities as part of their modified ‘camp in’.
Again, these events take a considerable amount of time to organise and I would like to thank our staff for all their hard work to organise these activities for our students, which would not take place without their dedication. Thank you also to our families for your ongoing support of school programs.

Facilities
A significant amount of work has taken place at school recently as we continue to improve our school facilities:
The refurbishment to Amenities 1 was completed prior to the holidays. This work included internal and external painting, new flooring, wall mounted urinals, lighting and Crim Safe to replace louvres.
External painting to Block 3 (Year 1) and Block 1 (Prep) is nearing completion.
Internal painting of walls in the auditorium has been completed.
The shade sails in the library courtyard and outside the administration building have been replaced.

LIBRARY NEWS
Library Borrowing
At the start of the term, all books were overdue because of the two week holiday period. Please
encourage children to remember their books on their borrowing day to avoid Overdue Notices being sent
home. We are also still encouraging students to bring their own library bags to protect the books.
Library At Break Times
Due to restrictions on play areas, the library is open for students at the following breaks:
Monday – Year 6 only
Tuesday – Year 5 only
Wednesday – Year 4 only
Thursday – Year 3 only
Friday – Year 6 only - On Gala Days (weeks 2-5), it will be open to Year 1 and 2 students.
Book Fair Success
A huge thank you to all of those who supported our Book Fair with a difference this year. Thank you for
your patience with the different system of purchasing. Though I had my doubts to start off, we ended up
being as successful as previous years. This will help support our library in purchasing new resources.
New Games in the Library
With some of the profits from the Book Fair, we have asked the students and updated the games on offer
at break times. The Year 5 students pictured below are enjoying the new games on offer.

Student News…
PLOVERS OF ALBANY HILLS
How would you feel if people were throwing rocks at you when you are trying to protect your babies? We are very lucky at Albany Hills to have such a huge variety of wildlife that live within our school grounds. The Plover or Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles) is one of the most precious animals in the school and they are currently nesting on the bottom oval. It is very important that everyone stay away from the plovers because they are very protective of their babies. They should be left alone to raise their young peacefully. In fact, all of the wildlife at our school must be left alone to live peacefully.

WATER WASTAGE
It is very important to not waste water because water is an irreplaceable resource. Here are some tips to help you save water at home and school. Always turn off the tap after you have washed your hands and only have 4-minute showers and when you flush the toilet don’t use the full flush button unless you need to. Make sure that you do not leave any other household water sources on. If you see any taps or other water sources on at school, please tell a teacher. Water is a valuable resource that cannot be replaced so we have to stop wasting water.

HELPING FAMILIES IN NEED AT CHRISTMAS
For the last few years, my family and I have volunteered with the Brisbane Basket Brigade. This involves collecting food and gifts to donate to people in need across Brisbane and Ipswich. We then help on packing day which is usually on the first week of December. We wrap gifts, pack boxes, and sort out food donations into parcels that we then deliver to various families homes all around Brisbane. If you would like to donate a basket of food or help on the packing weekend, check out their website below:
