(ARA) - When your child skins herknee or bumps her head, how doyou comfort her? With a kiss and ahug? No matter how loving andcareful you are, it's impossible toshield your children from all of life'slittle injuries.
Parents often think their chil-dren are safest in their own home.Sadly, every year home accidentssend thousands of children to theemergency room, many with seriousinjuries. But by taking some impor-tant precautions, such as replacingtraditional blinds with cordless, motorized versions, you can helpensure your child avoids serioushome accidents.
Here are some safety tipsthat can help parents keep childrensafe at home:
Choking and strangulation pre-vention
Choking and strangulationcan be significant hazards in thehome. You can minimize chokingrisks by making sure small childrenare served age-appropriate foodscut into smaller-than-bite-sizedpieces. Never give foods that arechoking hazards, such as hot dogs, nuts or raw carrots, to infants.Always stay with your small childwhile he is eating, so that you canquickly respond if he does run intotrouble.
Window treatments withcords are among the biggest homesafety hazards for children. Since1990, more than 200 infants andyoung children have accidentallystrangled on window treatmentcords, according to the ConsumerProduct Safety Commission. Thedangling cords are attractive to chil-dren, who may become entangled inthem. Consider replacing traditionalcorded shades with motorizedshades. These blinds and shades, powered by manufactur-
ers like Somfy Systems, eliminatecord risks because they are con-trolled by a motor and remote con-trol or wall switch. Motorization alsooffers many other benefits, fromconvenience to energy savings, thatmake them a good choice whenyou're making your home child-friendly.
FallsFalling down is part of grow-
ing up, and hopefully your little onewill suffer nothing more than a fewscrapes and bumps. More seriousfalls, however, can be a significantrisk to children's safety. And childrenfalling down are not the only danger;parents need to take precautions toprevent furniture and home itemsfrom falling on children.
Keep stairs and floors clearof toys or other objects that couldcause someone to trip. Secure stairswith safety gates at the top and bot-tom of the staircase. Windowsshould have safety guards andremain locked when not open.Never leave a child alone in a roomwith an open window, even if thewindow has a screen on it. A smallchild's weight can be enough to popa screen out of a window andexpose a child to a potentially fatalfall.

(ARA) - It's not uncommon for home-owners to get the itch to move whenthey've been in their house awhile. While just picking up and moving isn'tan option for most of us, there's anoth-er approach that people are taking:Refreshing their house to create ahigh-impact, high-style look, but doingit in a way that's cost effective.
You don't need to be an interi-or design expert to pull this off, either.
A little creativity, adaptive reuse andthe right focal point can give yourhome a luxurious look at a reasonableprice, according to top experts whospecialize in fabulous on a budget.
"Affordable luxury meansachieving comfort and a high level ofstyle for a price point that is not goingto break the bank," affordable-luxurydesigner Sarah Barnard says.
Here are a few ways toachieve a high-end look ata low-end cost for yournext indoor and outdoorproject.
* Use materials thatare timeless and classic.
"Mix the old with thenew," says BlancheGarcia, interior designerand contestant on HGTV's"Design Star." "It's aboutfinding a balance betweeninterjecting something real-ly beautiful with a flea mar-ket find."
She recommends starting withsomething simple - like a great desk -as an anchor piece and fill in around it.Use large pieces you already havethat can endure quality and aestheticsbut will not look dated or need to bereplaced. Add trims around living roomwindows and doors to create a time-less feel.
* Keep textures warm andbeautiful
"Somehow, we are missing thewarmth in new homes," Blanche says."You can change that feeling by usinglines that are classic and clean."
The simple yet elegant look ofwood, such as Western Red Cedar, instantly adds a glow and beauty toany room. This versatile material holdsa finish for an extended period of timeand weathers beautifully naturally, making it a lasting choice inside andout for siding, wall boards, trim, postsor beams.
* Create visual accents Simple details can add a luxu-
rious feel to your home, and accents, such as antique lamps, artwork andfresh flowers, can spark visual inter-est. Garcia recommends adding popsof yellow for a more vibrant look, as aneasy way to add spice at a low price. To create a more dramatic effect, con-sider adding blinds or shutters - insideor out - in warm natural red cedar foradditional function.
* Think green. It's easy to get an affordable
luxury look using elements that arealso eco-friendly, including locally-sourced products or natural materials.Barnard recommends looking atwhat's available and what can bereused for a fraction of the price.Consider using salvaged material byre-inventing old furniture, cupboards orlight fixtures.
"It's about moving toward notjust affordable luxury, but responsibleluxury," says Barnard. "Instead ofindustrial manufactured materials,

falls are minor, minimize situations thatcould lead to trouble, such as attractivetoys placed atop furniture that could tipover when a child climbs up to get thetoy. Move furniture away from windows
and secure items to the wall with anchor straps. If you have a flat screen inyour home, consider wall-mounting it for safety.
Appliance and fire safetyFire and electricity are fascinating to many children. Very young chil-
dren may crawl over to a wall outlet and older kids may be tempted to trytheir hand at cooking without supervision.
To minimize danger, never allow children to play with any kind of
power cord, even if it's not plugged in. They'll be safer in the long run if theylearn that cords are not appropriate toys. Cap unused wall outlets with safe-ty plugs and use cable channels to hide cords and cables that may attractchildren.
Keep flammable materials like matches, gasoline and lighters lockedaway where children can't reach them. When cooking, never let a child usea microwave unsupervised until he is tall enough to reach it safely on hisown. Avoid placing hot foods or liquids on the edges of counters or tables;place them safely in the center of the surface where they're away from littlehands.
You can't protect your children from all life's bumps and scrapes. Afew precautions, however, can help ensure that all their accidents are thekind you can heal with a kiss and a hug.

Make use of sustainably-harvestedmaterials like red cedar that require minimalprocessing while reducing environmental
impacts. Add luxury outdoors, by placing a reclaimed coffee table on your deckto extend the warm, luxurious look outside while creating a relaxing space.Planters and window boxes made with natural materials add warmth and textureas well.
At the end of the day, remember not to get swept up in fashion trends."Don't just focus on things that are hot and new," advises Barnard. "You want ahome that reflects your personal style."
