INTRODUCTION The purpose of this handbook is to give student-athletes and other interested persons a guide to the general operation of t h e interscholastic a t h l e t i c program a t Albemarle H i g h S c h o o l a n d Albemarle County. A student who has earned the privilege to participate in athletics is voluntarily making a choice of self-discipline and sacrifice. Successfully meeting these conditions requires responsible behavior, open communication and personal accountability from each of us; student-athletes, coaches and parents.
ATHLETIC GOALS OF ALBEMARLE HIGH SCHOOL The philosophy of athletics in the Albemarle Athletic Department considers athletics to be an integral part of the school’s educational program. Our goal is to provide positive experiences that will enhance and challenge our student-athletes physically, mentally, socially and emotionally. healthy for all who attend and participate.
Please be reminded that it is a privilege, not a right, to be an Albemarle student-athlete, an Albemarle coach or a parent of an Albemarle student-athlete. Each of us have a
responsibility to represent our school and our families with class and respectfulness. Your choice of language, actions and interactions with our own team, our opponents, our
guests and officials are a reflection of that commitment.
This requires positive role modeling characterized by self-control, accountability and ethical conduct.
HIGH 5’S for: 1. Positive school yells and cheers in a respectful manner.
2. Encouraging those fans around you to join in displaying sportsmanlike conduct.
3. Applaud during the introduction of players, coaches and officials and at the end of a contest for all performances from all participants. 4. Respectfully responding to decision of officials.
5. Shaking hands with all participants and coaches at the end of the contest, regardless of the outcome.
THUMBS DOWN for: 1. Booing or heckling an official, coach, player or cheerleader.

Each of us set the tone. Contribute to the true spirit of athletics. It is the ultimate goal of the Albemarle Athletic Department to exemplify positive sportsmanship behavior at all times. This
requires a united effort from our staff, student-athletes, paren t s and spectators. As a member of the VHSL and the
Albemarle athletic community, each of us have a responsibility to encourage and insist upon high standards. This
responsibility l ies with each of us. Should there be any action on the part of our student-athletes or spectators that
counteracts our goal, please know that the VHSL, the AHS administration and the AHS coaching staff reserve the right to
mandate appropriate consequences in order to insure a safe and positive athletic climate for all.

players, not just your own.
(4) Exercise self-control and reflect positively upon yourself, your team and the Albemarle Patriots.

TO OUR STUDENT-ATHLETES: As an Albemarle student-athlete, you are expected to conduct yourself with integrity, sportsmanship, honesty, pride and
humility. Your conduct is closely scrutinized as you sit in the classroom, as you travel and as you compete at home and on
the road. You are looked upon as a role model, particularly by your peers and younger c h i l d r e n . It is important that
your personal conduct be above reproach at all times. Realize that you are representing yourself, your team, your family

PARENT/ATHLETE/COACH COMMUNICATION
Coaching, parenting and being young are all difficult roles. By establishing an understanding of each role, we are
better able to accept the actions of each other and together, provide a greater benefit to our children. When your
child becomes a part of the Albemarle Athletic Department, you have the right to understand what expectations will
be placed on your child and what expectations we place on our coaches. This begins with clear communication
from the coach your program and a commitment from you to take your concerns directly to your coach when you
Are looking to solve problems and address concerns.
COMMUNICATIONS YOU should EXPECT FROM YOUR CHILD’S COACH: • Coach’s Philosophy
• Expectations and goals the coach has for your child as well as for the team/season
• Team requirements, special equipment needs, strength and conditioning programs
• Procedure to be followed if your child is injured during participation
• Game/practice schedule and updates
• Team rules, guidelines and consequences for infractions
• Lettering criteria (if applicable)
• Team selection process

• Advance notification of any schedule conflicts
• Advance notification of illness and injury - when possible
It is the goal of everyone that each Albemarle student-athlete will experience some of the most
rewarding moments and memories of their lives.
It is also important to understand that there may be times when things do not go the way everyone would wish.
When this occurs, discussion with the coach is imperative. While we encourage the initial dialogue to be between
the coach and the athlete, we recognize that sometimes that is uncomfortable. Direct contact with the coach is the
first and most integral step to understanding and finding resolution.
APPROPRIATE AREAS/CONCERNS TO DISCUSS WITH COACHES: • Treatment of your child
• Ways to help your child improve
• Concerns about your child’s behavior, safety and welfare
• Future strategy or plan on how you can better work/communicate with them
INAPPROPRIATE AREAS TO DISCUSS WITH COACHES: • Other student-athletes • Team strategy
• Play calling •Playing time

contact the Athletic Director,
and ask her to set up the meeting for you.
3. *Please, do NOT confront a coach before
4. or after a contest or practice.
These can be emotional times for both the athlete, parent and coach.
If meeting with the coach does not provide a satisfactory resolution?
1. Set up an appointment with the AD to discuss the situation
2. At this meeting the appropriate next step can be determined

Director and must be approved by the principal. All student-athletes must be on time to their first block class regardless of how late they
return home from an athletic trip the previous night.
5. Physical Education Class: All athletes must follow the same rules and regulations as physical education students. Their experience and
skills may be utilized for demonstration and assisting the Instructor. Limited activity should be considered by the Instructor if students are
going to participate in an athletic event that day or evening.

addition, they may be disciplined further by the Principal, Athletic Director or Coach that could include temporary or permanent suspension

“Regular” classes. For each day that a student-athlete is in ISS, they are NOT eligible for practice or competition.

10. School Debts: Students owing a debt to the school will be ineligible to participate in athletics until the debt is paid.
11. Equipment distribution and return: Once equipment and uniforms are issued, it becomes the total responsibility of the student. If
any of these items are lost, stolen or damaged, the athlete is held financially responsible for replacing it. All payments for lost equipment
must be made at the end of the season to the Albemarle HS Bookkeeper.
12. Dismissal/Quitting Policy: If a student is removed from, or quits a team without mutual release from the coach, he/she is ineligible
to try out for a team for the next 2 consecutive seasons. In the event that the student is not mutually released, the coach must report
these cases within 48 hours to the Athletic Director. This must be in writing, stating the student has been removed or quit. Should the
student wish to appeal, they must notify the Athletic Director in writing within 10 days of notification. Three neutral coaches will be set up by
the Athletic Director for the students to appeal the decision and they will decide the consequences.

ninth grade. The eight consecutive semesters shall be counted continuously from the first enrollment point, regardless of whether or not
he/she remains continuously enrolled in school.
28-8-1 AMATEUR RULE: The student shall be an amateur. An amateur is an athlete who engages in VHSL athletics
solely for the educational, physical, mental, and social benefits he/she derives therefore, and to whom VHSL athletics are nothing more than
an avocation.
28-9-1 ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION/PARENTAL CONSENT/PHYSICAL EXAMINATION RULE: The student
shall have submitted to the principal or designated representative of his/her school, prior to becoming a member of any
school athletic squad or team, League Form No. 2 (Athletic Participation/Parental Consent/ Physical Examination Form),

or approved by his/her school, or when earned in VHSL sanctioned meets or tournaments.
28-11-1 INDEPENDENT TEAM RULE: During the sports season for the relevant sport, a student may, while a member
of a school squad or team engaged in interscholastic sports, become a member of or participate with an organized team in

schedules activities of the school squad or team.
27-9-1 ALL-STAR PARTICIPATION RULE: The student shall not have participated in a non-VHSL all-star contest.
27-13-1 SPORTSMANSHIP RULE (ALSO see “SPORTSMANSHIP” section of this handbook)
Member schools are required to conduct all their relations with other schools in a spirit of good sportsmanship. Acts
which are prima facie evidence of failure to abide by this rule are those which are noted below and others of a similar
nature which transgress the usually accepted code for good sportsmanship.
27-13-4 harassment of game officials
27-13-5 failure of a school to use every means at its disposal to impress upon its faculty, student body,
team members, coaching staff and officials the values of sportsmanship in the preparation for, and the conduct and
management of interscholastic contests.
PENALTY: Any athlete who in protest lays hands or attempts to lay hands on an official may be declared
ineligible by the League or by his/her principal for up to one year. Any athlete who strikes an opponent, a coach, or a
spectator during or following an athletic event may be declared ineligible by the League or his/her principal for a
specified period of time up to one year depending on the seriousness of the act. The basis for this policy statement is
that a member school shall not be represented by any student whose conduct reflects discredit upon his school.
27-13- 6 EJECTION OF A PLAYER OR COACH FROM A CONTEST
The VHSL, the Commonwealth District and the Albemarle Athletic Department
support and mandate the following consequences:
RULE 27-13- 6: Players and coaches who are ejected from a contest for unsportsmanlike conduct are ineligible for the
team’s next contest. If the ejection takes place in the final contest of the season, the penalty shall carry over to the next
sports season for seniors or to the next school year for underclassmen. The school has the authority to issue additional consequences.
28-11-2 CONTEST LIMITATION RULE: No member school may permit its athletes to compete in more than the
total number of regular season interscholastic contests as specified in the VHSL Handbook. No athletes may participate
on the varsity and sub varsity levels in any sport on the same day.
HAZING LAW - VIRGINIA CODE 18.2-56
This law has serious implications for secondary school athletic teams and clubs. Embarrassing, humiliating and
dangerous acts of “initiation” of any kind could be considered acts of hazing. Should one result in injury to a student,

ALBEMARLE COUNTY SCHOOLS SPORTS
CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT PROGRAM & “RETURN TO PLAY” PLAN
UPDATED BY ACPS HEALTH ADVISORY BOARD – February 2013
We are committed to safe practice, and we have this plan to ensure that (i) coaches, athletic directors, Certified Athletic
Trainers (ATC), administrators, volunteers, student-athletes, and their parents are aware of the short-and long-term effects
of concussions; (ii) student-athletes sustaining concussions are removed from play immediately and referred appropriately;
(iii) student-athletes who have sustained concussions are returned to play only after receiving appropriate medical care,
adequate time to heal, and demonstrating no symptoms consistent with a concussion.
The ACPS Sports Concussion Management Plan includes 5 fundamental components:
1. Verified training of coaches on concussion risks, recognition, and management.
2. Education of parents and student-athletes on concussion risks, signs, and symptoms, and post-injury management for
sports and school officials. Parents and student-athletes will read, sign and submit the Albemarle County Public Schools’
Concussion Information Sheet to the school before the first practice.
3. Immediate removal from play by the student-athlete’s coach, ATC, or team physician of any student-athlete suspected of
sustaining a concussion in a practice or games (i.e. exhibiting signs and/or symptoms). “When in doubt, sit them out” is
the operating principle.
4. Written clearance to return to play for the student-athlete by a licensed health care professional trained in the
evaluation and management of a concussion. The written clearance must be received by the ATC before the student-
athlete is allowed to return to the field/court. Prior to participation in a full-contact practice the student-athlete will be
given a post-injury Impact test that will be interpreted by a physician knowledgeable in concussion management. The
Impact test results will be used in conjunction with the entire history and assessment to help determine “return to play”
status. “Return to Play Requires Medical OK” is the operating principle.
5. Treatment of the Student-Athlete in School. School personnel will be trained on concussion management in the school.
They will be informed of the student-athlete’s injury and its specific symptom manifestations – physical, cognitive,
emotional, sleep. The school nurse will be notified to assist the student-athlete’s recovery by informing the student-
athlete’s teachers, who may provide an altered work-load to aid the student’s recovery.

ALBEMARLE BOOSTER CLUBS Get your parents Involved - we need their support!
Being involved in your team’s Booster Club is an excellent way to support the needs of your child’s team and their coaching staff. Each Albemarle team organizes their own individual Booster Club under the direct supervision of the Head
Coach and the Athletic Director. How active, organized and how structured the Booster Club would like to become is completely dependent upon the goals
and the direction of the Head Coach. All spending/committing of Booster funds MUST be approved by the Athletic Director prior to the implementation or application of any Booster funds.
.
Common fund raising efforts go towards: • Charter buses
• Non Inventory Items like Team sweatshirts/t-shirts/warm-ups

ACPS ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION FEE
TO: Albemarle County Public Schools Students and Families
FROM: Albemarle County Public Schools
Department of Secondary Education
SUBJECT: New Albemarle County Public Schools Athletic Participation Fee
Albemarle County Schools offers a high quality athletic program to supplement our students’ experience at the high
school level. In order maintain this program with increased financial constraints; we have assessed an athletic fee
beginning in the fall of 2010.
Starting last school year, Albemarle County Public Schools required that each student pay a non-refundable athletic
fee of $75 for each sport in which he or she is a confirmed member. Fees collected will contribute to the Albemarle
County Public Schools budget to assist with coaching salaries, security, field maintenance, transportation costs, and
VHSL membership fees.
The maximum athletic fee per family is $450. Athletes that tryout and become an official team member will be
required to pay the $75 athletic fee prior to the first official contest in order to be eligible to compete. There is
no relationship between athletic fees and a guarantee of student playing time. Playing time for athletes is the sole
discretion of the Head Coach and his/her staff. The athletic fee is non-refundable and will not be returned to an
athlete who leaves his or her team for any reason.
The fee will be waived for students that qualified for the free or reduced price meals. Please contact
Albemarle County Schools Child Nutrition Program at 295-0566 if you did not grant permission for your
free/reduced status to be shared for this purpose.
