◆ COVER STORY
Guide dogs give life in many ways SUSAN QUINN
ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Kayla Aolick views the day she saw her Shadow as the day she gained her independence.
Aolick has multiple seizures thanks to the after-effects of a brain tumour she had removed when she was younger. Shadow is her dog guide, and he is able to alert Aolick before she has a seizure, or alert someone nearby to
get help for her.More importantly,
having Shadow by her side means Aolick is able to go about life without having someone watching her every step.
“I still have a lot of independence now. I go to a cooking group on Mondays and I don’t have to drag my mom with me. I can go just with him,” Aolick says.
“I can go other places without my mom having to watch
over me all the time.”Life has been a lot
better since the Lions Foundation of Canada paired Aolick with Shadow, a five-year-old golden retriever, she said.
“Since having him I’ve been a lot better. The seizures have decreased. I might have one every couple of months.”
She is less stressed now that she has Shadow, and he can alert her before she has a seizure so she
can take medication to calm down.
“He detects them before they happen,” Aolick explained.
“I might still have [a seizure] but it might not be as bad as when I wasn’t able to know before I got him.”
Aolick and her mother Sheila are giving back to the foundation by organizing the second annual Purina Walk for Dog Guides at Blair Park in Port Alberni on Sunday, May 31 at 1 p.m. (registration is at 12:15 p.m.). Last year the pair raised $4,800.

My ex has parenting time with our two children every other weekend. I want to move with our children to Calgary for work. Can I just go?The Family Law Act (FLA) deals with the issue of relocating with your children. If you and your ex have an order that gives each of you parenting time, you are required by the FLA to provide her with 60 days notice of your intention to move, including the proposed date and location. If she does not object within 30 days, you can just go. If she does object, you may need to have a trial. If you have most of the parenting time, you will need to prove to the court that your relocation is made in good faith, and that you have made reasonable and workable arrangements to ensure that your children maintain a relationship with their mom. This usually requires you to come up with proposals for extra visits during holidays and summer, and can sometimes include you covering the cost of flights. If you are sharing parenting time equally, you will also need to prove that the move is in the best interest of your children. Relocation can be a complex area, and it is always best to get personalized legal advice for your situation.
NOTE: THIS INFORMATION IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE, AND YOU SHOULD NOT RELY ON IT AS SUCH. TO ENSURE YOUR INTERESTS ARE PROTECTED, FORMALLY SEEK THE ADVICE OF A LAWYER.

Anyone who has growled in frustration while a website loads or while on hold with a doctor’s office knows tolerance for delay is in short demand. And this demand for instant results is seeping into every corner of our lives, not just virtually.
Retailers are jumping into same day delivery services; Smart phone apps eliminate the wait for a cab, a date or a table at a restaurant. Movies and TV shows begin streaming in seconds. Experts caution that instant
gratification comes with a price: it is making people less patient.
Patience is a virtue that is being crushed in the Twitter age.
Generally, patience equates to health and success. Patience is referred to as an open-mindedness and self-regulation that results in the capacity to tolerate delay, slowness or difficulty without being angry.
To be patient, people should know the causes of their impatience. For instance, if tired or hungry, no whinging is needed, just rest or eat. If productivity is hampered, find alternative solutions.
Similarly if the
person ahead in the grocery line is making small talk with the cashier, chat with other customers or grab a magazine to cope with the wait.
However, people don’t do these things because it has become not quite that easy.
According to Marc Wittman, a psychologist at the Institute for Frontier Areas of Psychology and Mental Health in Frieburg, Germany, impatience is a heritage of evolution.
Once upon a time, impatience made sure people didn’t die from spending too long on a single unrewarding activity.
It gave people the impulse to act.
Experiencing the need to be patient and having impatience creates an internal yin and yang balance. This is a finely turned internal timer with a buzzer that goes off when it is time to stop foraging an unproductive patch or abandon a failing hunt.
Apparently that timer is now gone. The fast pace of society has thrown the internal timer out of balance.
The fast pace creates expectations that can’t be rewarded fast enough or be rewarded at all.
When things move more slowly than expected, the internal timer plays tricks by stretching out the wait-time in the brain and summoning an out of proportion anger to the delay.
In short, things that our great- great-grandparents would have found miraculously efficient now drive us around the bend.
Seemingly slow is painful to tolerate because the fast pace of society has warped our internal sense of timing.

From / A3 The actual time we
are to wait has little to do with how long the wait feels.
So what do we need to know? Better yet, what could we do?
(1) Occupied time feels shorter. Carry a book or technology to keep you busy.
Find a short term thing to do as distraction, helping to minimize boredom and restlessness and
speed up the feelings of time waited.
(2) Uncertain, unanticipated, unexplained, unfair waits are the worst kind of waits.
Ask questions and keep asking questions until you have a clear picture of what your wait will look like. From there you can figure out how best to handle the factors of the wait.
(3) Being overly
anxious, frustrated, angry and/or alone does not shorten waits. In fact, they lengthen the wait and will likely raise blood pressure, increase the risk of ulcers and ultimately heart disease.
Humour is often a way for people to blow off steam while waiting as is doing deep breathing, muscle relaxation exercises, meditation and mindfulness. Conversation with and support from others also relieves stress and helps to keep self-control in check.
Sometimes no matter what you do to relieve your stress and the accompanying overwhelming feelings, there is no change. Speaking with your doctor (GP), medical health professional or a therapist/counsellor may be helpful.

This year Kayla said she would like to raise more than $5,000 for the Purina Walk for Dog Guides.
The walk takes place in more than 200 communities in Canada (the closest to Port Alberni is in Nanaimo) and 100
per cent of the money raised goes toward the six dog guide programs.
The Lions Foundation of Canada gives Canadians a new “leash” on life by providing dog guides to people dealing with a variety of challenges. There are
canine vision, hearing ear, seizure response, autism assistance, diabetic alert and service dogs.
When Kayla Aolick was chosen to receive a dog guide, she spent three and a half weeks in Ontario training with Shadow. The length of time a client
trains with their dog guide is different, but all the programs are expensive to run, she said.
For more information or to register for the Purina Walk for Dog Guides, or if you are interested in helping sponsor the walk, please call Sheila Aolick at 250-720-1062 or the Lions Club of Port Alberni at 250-724-3393.

After a few moves they are now located on Roger Street and boast 28 employees who are kept exceedingly busy. Hetherington is also pleased that his two sons, Aaron (Op-erations Manager) and Corbin (Facility Man-ager) have joined this family-based business.
They are excited to announce they will now be chipping plastic containers on site (photo left) and are the only facility on the Island to do so. They have always recycled them but this adds another facet to the business.
Hetherington, after rebuilding and then sell-ing batteries expanded his business by pur-chasing Alberni Septic and Valley Septic. His next move was into the environmental area by recycling oil, oil lters and antifreeze. This has progressed to disposing of plastic 1, 4 and 20 litre oil containers, hazardous waste, recycling, and also for the public they can bring in their batteries that have expired.
If you have a spill of hazardous material Hetherington’s has spill containment prod-ucts.
Hetherington’s is also the exclusive distrib-utor of Eco-Freez the rst antifreeze in the country to contain bitrex, an element that makes it pet friendly.
They still carry batteries, Yuasa automotive and industrial brand and Trojan for Marine. They also carry batteries for your ATV.
Hetherington’s also has portable toilets that come in handy when you have those huge family gatherings.
Hetherington’s is a local based business that services the entire Island and Sunshine Coast.
Hetherington’s is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be reached by calling 250-724-5112. They also have a toll free number 1-800-563-6004.
