◆ COVER STORY

Cook-off is one contest with a big goalBETTER TOGETHER: | Alberni Valley dietitian says benefits are many to families that spend time cooking and eating together.

SUSAN QUINNALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The family that cooks together could win some money together with a winning cooking video.

The BC-wide Hands-on Cook-off kicked off earlier this month with a powerful goal: to inspire kids to take the lead in the kitchen.

Hélène Dufour, a registered dietitian and community nutritionist in Port Alberni, says the cook-off is a good way to get families to prepare meals together.

“ I really support this contest; it goes along with our families eating together campaign we have in February.

“We really believe in promoting eating together, and cooking together fits in with this message,” she said.

“We know kids gain many valuable benefits from cooking and eating together.”

According to studies, cooking and eating together, as a family, is linked to better grades and academic performance in school; improved health and improved mental health, says Dufour.

“Kids are better connected to their families if they eat together. They have a better understanding of their family values if they eat together.”

The meal doesn’t have to be dinner, it

can be any meal, says Dufour. “It doesn’t even have to be at a table. It could be a picnic or in the living room but as long as

the TV is off and they turn off their phones.”

The term “family” is flexible as well: a single parent with a child or a grandparent with a grandchild constitutes a family. “As long as it’s a meaningful adult with the child, they get the benefit,” she says.

Studies have found

children who eat with their families are less likely to be bullied “which is interesting,” she says. “We think that comes with having conversation and connection and parents are going to be aware earlier.”

For families that want some guidance on what to talk

about during a meal, the Better Together website (bettertogetherbc.ca) offers a learning link with downloadable conversation cards. “They’re random questions,” she says. “We have a set that was just done last month that’s for toddlers and pre-schoolers. Sometimes you don’t think about having conversations with the little ones.

“It helps them build words and conversation and language.”

The contest is open to anyone in B.C. To enter, people need to film themselves making a favourite recipe. Each video must have two or more people cooking together and can’t be longer than three minutes. There are different categories, such as youth and multi-generational.

Deadline to submit your cooking video is 12 p.m. on May 15.

Dufour’s daughter entered a video a couple of years ago and won some money. Dufour said they rehearsed a bit before filming the video.

“Now pretty much everyone has a cellphone they can use to video. You need to show you’re having fun in the video; that would be helpful.”

For more information, please go online to bettertogetherbc.ca/ contest.

Valley SENIORS Our writer: Valley Seniors is a monthly feature compiled by Orlando Delano and featuring residents living in Port Alberni

seniors complexes.

Abbeyfield celebrates retiring employeeOne of the

important changes

that Abbeyfield experienced by the end of the year was the farewell to Betty Cartlidge, one of its regular employees. After 10 years working in this home, this popular staff member and a good friend of the residents, announced her retirement from her duties as a cook and house keeper.

“I am retiring because of health reasons,” she explained.

At an emotional and meaningful program, the Abbeyfield community got together for a farewell party to thank her for her dedicated work and friendship to all. “Betty is a wonderful lady and friendly to all of us”, said Bertha

Levesque, president of the Residents Society.

Cartlidge, who was born and raised in Port Alberni, has been married for more than 46 years. She and her husband are the parents of three children and nine grandchildren. She lived in the Cherry Creek area until she

got married. Before Abbeyfield,

she worked in different places doing various types of jobs, from waitressing and performing janitorial duties to working as a chamber maid, while looking after her family at the same time.

“My connection to

Abbeyfield began in early 2000 through Jacci Garcia, manager of Echo Estates and Abbeyfield board member at the time, and whom I had gone to school with,” Cartlidge recalls.

“At first, I worked with one of the residents and soon after I was interviewed for a job position in the newly opened home.”

Her working experience in Abbeyfield began a few months after the arrival of the first residents to their new home, and three months after the official opening of the Abbeyfield Port Alberni by the local and provincial authorities. She was among the longest serving employees of this home.

Throughout the

years Cartlidge became a popular employee, especially among the residents, who enjoyed her friendly personality and good disposition as well as her love of music.

“She is a friendly and caring person,” says one of the residents. “Betty is the kind of person that will always greet you with a smile every time you see her in the hallways,” adds another.

“I am sure that she

can sing for hours,” comments another resident.

“I love music and I think that my interest and like for music comes from my grandfather, on my mother’s side. He was a natural musician,’ says Cartlidge. “I always remember that as a young girl I used to sing along at family parties and get-together functions, especially at summer picnics.

“Once in Abbeyfield, one of the residents,

Mary Ella Newberry, who loved singing, invited me to be part of her Friday sing-along session. And the House Mother at that time introduced me to Mr. Bob Hudson, the pianist of the event,” she says.

After that, Betty became an important volunteer singer and leader at this weekly program. She also assisted in the production of the Abbeyfield songbooks and carols.

Without a trace: dogs go missing

Anyone who reads my column every week

is aware that our dog Charlie went missing a month ago. What people might not realize is that more than a few dogs in West Kelowna have vanished, and they’ve all been small to medium sized purebreds or purebred mixes.

After viewing the six pets on the handouts circulated by the other owners and I, many people thought there was a criminal dog-ring in town, while others attributed the sudden disappearances to wildlife attacks. We fully admit that we don’t know what happened to ours.

What we do know, however, is that there has been no evidence that would confirm the latter, and we’ve all looked high and low for it.

We’ve also learned that dog flipping – the business of stealing dogs and selling them – is happening all

over, including right here in the Okanagan.

Before Charlie went missing, the idea of my pets being nabbed had never crossed my mind. Wildlife and traffic were my big concerns when it came to their safety; never did I consider they might be dog-napped. But after talking to almost every owner who’s lost a dog in the Okanagan recently and finding out just how many people suspect their pet was stolen, or know that they were, I started to investigate.

One of the missing West Kelowna dogs from our handouts is Shylo, a Chihuahua

Pomeranian, whose owners live in Glenrosa, like I do. Three days before his mysterious disappearance an unknown middle-aged woman with short red hair had approached Shylo on their porch where he was sitting in the sun. She was holding a bowl of water and quickly fled when she discovered he was not alone.

His family can’t help but wonder if she is the reason he vanished.

“If there’d been coyotes or any animals, Shylo would have been barking like mad and jumping up at the door,” her owner, Chakara, said. “And there would have been pee, poop, blood or fur left behind.” But after looking all over their area and finding nothing, they started their search with posting ads, then going door to door and putting up flyers.

From / A3“We are going to miss

her,” says Marlene Dietrich, president of the board of directors. “Fortunately, we will continue seeing her on a weekly basis as a volunteer.”

Cartlidge’s passion for music and her beautiful voice have continued being part of the traditional Friday morning sing-along sessions with residents and visitors at Abbeyfield House for several years

now.Singing along with

Marlene Dietrich and Bob Hudson at the piano, they have provided enjoyable hours of music to the senior population of this home.

“I have enjoyed my work in Abbeyfield and my volunteer musical contribution.

“The residents have taught me a great deal about life, and for me it has been a pleasure serving and helping them,” says Cartlidge.

Cartlidge retiresHeritage Fair May 1–2The Alberni Valley Museum

Regional Heritage Fair takes place at Echo Centre and the Alberni Valley Museum this Friday, May 1 for judging and Saturday, May 2 for public viewing.

Port Alberni will once again host the regional fair for Vancouver Island North, drawing SD70 students as well as those from around the North Island.

“The fair promotes literacy as students, read for information, write about what they have learned, listen to judges’ questions and speak about

their projects,” AV Museum educational curator Shelley Harding said.

“The heritage fair encourages students to explore issues of personal relevance and take pride in their heritage.”

On Saturday, community displays will be open in the morning for people’s choice voting. Awards will be handed out at 1 p.m. at Echo Centre, when Haa-huu-payak School students will also share aspects of their First Nations culture through dance.

For more info, call the AV Museum at 250-720-2523.

Families devastated by thought of dog theftFrom / A4

These flyers would end up getting torn down like many of ours were. Eight months later they still have no idea what happened to him.

Other cases have been more obvious, with people actually seeing their pets being stolen, paying a reward to get them back, or tracking them down at drug dealers’ houses to rescue them.

Sometimes dog theft happens for ransom, but there are several other reasons as well. Selling to people wanting to pay less for certain breeds who don’t care about the right paperwork or adequate background checks is a common one.

Not having a clue what happened to our pets makes things more difficult because the search for a lost dog is very different from a stolen one. But thieves prefer we don’t know, which is why they’ll leave the gate of a fenced yard open so we think the pooch has merely gotten loose, or why they’ll lurk around waiting for opportunities to snatch a dog by itself.

This past Sunday, some of the other owners and I participated in a large search party along with many supportive friends and strangers to look for our pets and inform the public about lost and stolen dogs. We wanted to encourage them to take notice of unfamiliar people and suspicious behaviour in their neighborhoods and to report anything questionable.

We also urged them to keep their own pets safe by keeping them leashed, not leaving them unattended in front of a store or in an unlocked house, not leaving them alone in a car if possible, and installing locks on fenced yards.

Bobbie, one of the

dogs on our flyers, gave us all hope when she arrived home the day before our search party. After surviving 14 days on the lam, the short-legged little

Dachshund came home on her own, skinnier and smelling like a horse among other things.

Farms are an ideal spot for a frightened

lost dog to hide out, but so are many typical backyards. Please check your property to see if you’ve got an animal fugitive like Bobbie

in your midst, and if you do, don’t chase or scare them away. If they’re skittish, take a picture and call dog control or the pet’s owner as soon as

possible.And if you haven’t

done it already, register, microchip and GPS your pets if you can.

The cost is minimal

compared to the heartache.

The Alberni Valley Hos-pice Society has been providing compassionate care to the community since 1982! You’ve prob-ably heard of our resi-dential hospice, Ty Wat-son House, or seen our sunflower mural outside our office on 3rd Avenue. We also offer free grief

counseling (including support groups), com-plementary integrative health services, and life story recording, among other services to the be-reaved, those in pallia-tive care, and their loved ones. The support we receive

from our amazing com-munity is what allows us to continue to grow our programs and services and we’d like to take this opportunity to thank Port Alberni for helping us to do so.May is Hospice Month,

and as such we have some events planned in the community!

Hike for HospiceSunday, May 3rd, to kick

off National Hospice Pal-liative Care Week (May 3-9) we’ll be hosting the Hike For Hospice at Blair Park. Join us for a fun walk

around the dike, refresh-ments, kids’ activities, and more. Wear a tie for Ty Wat-

son House (for every tie worn, Jim’s Clothes Closet will donate $10 to Hospice), carry a carna-tion for a lost loved one, and enjoy the supportive community at this family friendly event! We hope you’ll join us and cele-brate Hospice in the Val-ley. There is no registra-tion fee!

Tag DayFriday, May 15th is our

Tag Day – we hope you’ll say hello wherever you catch us in the commu-nity! We’ll have informa-tion about our services available, plus friendly volunteers to answer any questions you have.

Black Ty GalaSaturday, May 23rd, get

glammed up and join us at the Black Ty Gala! Hosted once again at

the Echo Community Centre, the Gala will fea-ture live and silent auc-tions, music by Tara, and a gourmet dinner catered by the Starboard Grill – plus some other tricks up our sleeve! Come let us wine and dine you, then bid on unique auc-tion items and dance the

night away! This year’s theme is “An Evening at the Oscars” and it’s sure to be a great one! We hope you’ll join us during Hospice Month to spread information about our services, and enjoy one of our fun May events! If you’d like more infor-

mation, please contact us at 250-723-4478 or visit our website at alber-nihospice.ca
