Héctor M. Zapata
The Office of Zapata – Zapata & Associates Structural and Consulting Engineers
INTRODUCTION
Hector M. Zapata & Associates, now Zapata-Zapata & Assoc. was
organized in July 1961 to offer consulting engineering services to
the architectural profession and the construction business, in the
field of structural engineering.
An intimate knowledge of Puerto Rico, its environment and needs,
as well as our exposure and access to local and stateside
technology, resources and experience, provide Zapata-Zapata &
Associates with a very unique professional strength in our problem
solution and design approach.
In the performance of these services, the principals and the key
personnel are actively and continuously involved in project
development, in coordination with other related discipline, in the
exercise of cost controls and in the production of detailed
drawings in keeping with the highest professional standard.
At present all the structural analysis and designs together with the
structural drawings are computerized.

Professional MIGUEL A. ZAPATA Summary
As a very creative, talented and young professional, I feel strongly
committed to utilize the best of my potential and knowledge of the
excellence in my profession. For the full term of my studies I
qualified as honor student graduating with high honors (magna
cum laude). I am a member of the honorary fraternity Tau Beta
Pi, The American Society of Civil Engineering and actively
participated as member in all the corresponding activities. I also
qualified to be included in the listing of who is who Among College
Students.
In my professional interest I have worked extensively in computer
technology and specifically in the analysis and design of structural
elements. During my college years I created a series of computer
programs that are now being used in my professional office.
After pursuing my B.S.C.E. I enrolled in the graduate school of the
University of Puerto Rico for a Master Degree in Civil Engineering
majoring in structural design. Simultaneously I am also furthering
over work in computer programming oriented towards more
sophisticated theory of finite element to provide our office with the
most recent and advance programming technology available.
I am actually a licensed Civil Engineer in Puerto Rico and a
principal in the Firm Zapata – Zapata & Assoc. P.E., P.S.C.,
performing supervisions of projects, structural analysis and design

1. EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Markets Covered: A mechanical engineering firm dedicated to the design of projects in the pharmaceutical industry where situations requiring close coordination between the different disciplines are normally encountered. Our 20 plus year experience ranges from applications in manufacturing requiring Clean Room types, Class 10,000 rooms equipped with Class 100 Laminar Air Flow Hoods, to Fluid Bed Dryers, Capsule Coating, Low Humidity Processes, Packaging Lines, and extending through Q.C. Labs., Warehousing, Cafeterias, Mechanical Equipment Rooms, to support utilities such as Water, from Potable up to Purified Systems and infrastructure utilities. These have included Cooling Towers, Chillers, Boilers, Compressed Air, Fuel, Gases, all designed from source to Storage and distribution, and assorted types of Pumping Systems including Firewater Loops, and Storage, to distribution. Exposure to different companies with their methods of project implementation and approach to solutions have trained us to apply our design efforts to comply with owner’s standards and obtain quality results. We therefore can offer you a consulting firm with the practical knowledge that is best gained through experience. Most of our work has been in pharmaceutical applications where the mechanical systems are heavily involved, and have varied from new facilities to remodeling or expanding those existing. In applications where the project involves replacing or updating an HVAC system or major mechanical equipment, we’ve been the project leader and coordinated with the other disciplines to provide a complete design package. An example of this is may be an area that requires updating to comply with newer standards and the room conditions which require a new HVAC system and layout. These rooms usually require sanitary finishes, gypsum board ceilings with HEPA terminals, lighting fixtures, sprinkler heads plus piping utilities, and plumbing, etc. It is in this type of project where we have been mostly involved. Many other projects have dealt with equipment replacement where we’ve provide a design package with the electrical and structural disciplines. Systems Design We have provided complete design packages for major mechanical equipment systems such as: Air Conditioning and Dehumidification - Applications range from Comfort Standards to Low Humidity Dessicant Process, Sterile Rooms requiring Laminar Air Flow Patterns, 100% Fresh Air Supply and Exhaust Systems, General Ventilation, Fumes Exhaust Systems, and Dust Collector Systems.

Plumbing Systems - From Water Supply Cisterns, Tanks with Booster Pumps to full building distribution and design of Sanitary Sewer up to site main and connection to the PRASA Manhole and in some cases projects that have required Forced Line Designs approved by PRASA. Others - Studies of existing systems for improving air balancing problems, modifying pressurization requirements and changes in owner standards. - Hydraulic studies of existing Water Distribution systems ranging from Potable , to drainage but mostly extending Chilled Water and Purified Water Loops. - General Plant Load Calculations for Chiller Replacement Feasibility Studies. - Comparison Studies of Initial and Energy Costs for Payback Determination to select best suited Refrigeration Method. - Cost estimates of Complete Projects for capital requests. -Boiler systems: These have involved expansion of existing mechanical rooms, and demand studies to determine best suitable size unit vs. costs. Once approved final design with the required structures, electrical service, and the mechanical design for the boiler and its related piping for feed-water, supply steam, blow-offs, economizers, pressure reliefs, chimneys, and providing tie-in to the existing manifold. Also involved have been integrating the control diagrams and instrument specification for performance and safety monitoring through the plant central system. -Purified Water Systems designs: In the design of Purified, Soft, Deionized, De-chlorinated etc. water systems, our clients have included Hewlett Packard, Warner Lambert, Coca Cola, and Schering-Plough. Although similar in concept, all vary in their types and sequence of treatment, recirculation and storage methods. A through involvement and understanding of the owner’s requirements and particular methods that come only through many interviews with treatment specialists, owner’s engineers, operators, vendors and site visits have resulted in quality systems. Our designs provide for Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, Controls sequence, equipment sizing, selection, specifications and quotes procurement. Layout of equipment rooms, plant loop distribution dimensioned and sloped, large scale detailed plans and elevation views of central treatment equipment, and finally complementing the construction documents with supervision visits, review of submittals, evaluating field challenges, and certification of completion. Other Mechanical Systems: - Firewater Storage, Pumping, Site Loops, Interior Distribution, Hydraulics and procurement of agency approval. Specific Company Experience Relevant to this Project. - An average of 25 fifteen projects yearly that have required HVAC designs ranging from pharmaceutical to health, educational, commercial, private and public office buildings.
