From the showroom, the Jag-
uar XE rests sleek and invit-
ing in the parking lot; its trimlines and super turbocharged engineoffering a dizzying combination ofpower, luxury and performance.
It sits and waits patiently, but itis a big cat, just waiting to prowlthe streets.
Sliding into the drivers side andbeing enveloped by the heated orcooled English leather seats is muchlike donning an exquisitely tailoredSavile Row suit. The fit is fine andcomfortable, even luxurious, yetthere is a certain majestic aura onefeels. It is palpable. Upon grippingthe heated steering wheel, its almostas if a pair of leather driving glovesshould be the next thing on the list.
The cockpit-like Incontrol TouchPro panel gleams with options upon
command, the internal computerautomatically syncing with a smartphone and discovering music em-
bedded within. As the beat bounc-es from the upgraded 17 speakerstucked into every nook and cranny
and pumping out 825-watts thatis part of the Meridan SurroundSound System, the cat is ready tofeast upon the roadway.
efficient with no loss
in performance
A tap on the accelerator sets the3.0-liter, 340-horsepower engine topurring, but that pleasant purr quick-ly becomes a throaty growl as the tworows of cylinders in the linear deliv-ery system begin charging. With dual, independent variable cam timing thatvaries inlet and exhaust valve opera-
tion, coupled with lightweight pistonscushioned by ultra-low friction rings, the engine is a model of efficiency thatsacrifices nothing when it comes toperformance.
The XE, which provides the foun-
dation for Jaguars line of sport se-dans, leaps from the lot, fairly pounc-ing on the pavement and quicklyaccelerates to 60 MPH in 5.1 seconds.

The blind-spot monitor that ispart of the upgraded, technologi-cally superior Advanced DriverAssistance package, signals in theside view mirror when another ve-hicle is moving alongside or evenapproaching from the rear, makinglane changes an effortless endeavor.
The electronics and com-
puter-driven features ofmodern automobiles con-
tinue to evolve at a rapid pace.Until now, however, most of thesefeatures have been manually em-ployed. But the self-driving car, once a concept reserved only forscience fiction, may make driving
even more passive in the near fu-ture, with some slated to hit show-rooms as early as 2017.
Google, as a pioneer of some
of the more advanced self-drivingautomobile technologies, says thatcomputer-navigated cars are saferthan manually operated automo-
biles. Autonomous cars are al-ready being operated in California,Nevada, Florida and certain areaswithin the United Kingdom. At the2013 Consumer Electronics Show
in Las Vegas, Toyota and Audi un-veiled their prototypes to sell toregular car buyers, while Ford andMercedes-Benz are working on
their own self-driving technology.Legislation within the United
States has already paved the wayfor autonomous cars to be testedon private roads. Once these carsare made available to the public, legislators will begin the task of re-vising driving laws and may needto reconsider how drivers earn
their licenses.Although the technology differsdepending on the manufacturer, inthe Google autonomous vehicle,

Fuel efficiency is animportant issue forcar buyers, and under-
standably so. Conserving fuelis good for drivers budgetsand the planet, so the conceptof fuel efficiency would seemto benefit everyone.
However, just because fuelefficiency is a good conceptdoes not mean that there arenot misconceptions about itamong drivers and automo-tive professionals alike. Thefollowing are some of themore widely held misconcep-tions about fuel efficiency.
full tanks
conserve fuel
Many people have longbelieved that a nearly fulltank of gas means the fuelwithin that tank is less likelyto evaporate, and that half-fulltanks are losing gas to evapo-ration. Though this mighthave been the case years ago, todays vehicles are smarterthan ever before, and theirfuel systems are designed withvapor recovery systems sodrivers traveling around withtanks that are closer to empty
than full arent losing gasto evaporation.

Even lane drift is addressed as the LaneDeparture Warning system signals the driverwith a visual alert and steering-wheel vibra-
tion when the vehicle starts to fade from alane. Should the drift persist, the XE will au-tomatically help steer it back into the properlane. Driver inattention is also addressedwith the Driver Condition Monitor. It detectslapses in concentration due to tiredness byconstantly checking driver inputs. And likea mama cat watching over her cubs, it willsuggest taking a break via an audible alertand visual reminder in the instrument panel.
These are just a couple of the technological good-ies sprinkled quite liberally throughout the XE.
extensive safety features
The Traffic Sign Recognition and AdaptiveSpeed Limiter will both help automatically con-trol speed within safe limits. The latter uses de-
tected traffic sign information to keep the car atan appropriate speed. If no traffic signs are de-tected, it will use the map data from the optionalnavigation system. And the former relies on aforward facing camera to detect variable speedlimits and display them.
In addition, the Adaptive Cruise Control withQueue Assist uses radar technology to automati-cally control speed to maintain a safe distancefrom the vehicle ahead. It will even automaticallystop the car if the vehicle in front comes to a halt.
One of the big safety features, the Autono-mous Emergency Braking system delivers anaudible alert if a forward collision appears im-
minent. Visual warnings follow and if there is noreaction from the driver, the system automatical-ly brakes to reduce the severity of the collision.
All 2016 models include the new JaguarEliteCare warranty, a 5-year, 60,000-mile pro-gram with free scheduled maintenance androadside assistance within North America in thecase of breakdowns, accidents and minor prob-lems like flat tires.
its about the journey
While these features all offer tremendouspeace of mind, they tend to escape the brainwhen cruising down the interstate in a smoothroll, or hugging a tight turn in a winding haulup, say Sandia Crest. As a matter of fact, sit-ting behind the wheel of the XE is a comfortable
cruise that really makes the journey worthwhile, and easy to make an excuse to find longer routesto travel to a destination.
Whats more, the low drag co-efficient in-creases the already economic and ecologicallysound engine to provide a relatively stronggas performance of 23 miles to the gallon. That is helped by the Stop/Start technologythat automatically shuts down the enginewhile lingering at lights or stuck in stop-and-go traffic.
Even the old, reliable battery is a steeped in ad-vances as the kinetic energy built up during brak-ing is redirected toward charging the battery.
master of the road
The XE handles like a dream with instan-taneous response. And its no wonder since itfeatures a double-wishbone front suspension. And the aluminum front spindles that are bothlight and stiff are forged from cast blanks. Therear suspension is controlled through an integrallink system, all of which creates lateral and lon-gitudinal stiffness for uncommon handling anda smooth ride.
The XE is as strong and light as it could possiblybe thanks to constant analysis and efforts to infusethe latest engineering techniques in its design.
The XE series also features All Surface Prog-ress Control to help drivers maintain vehiclecontrol under all driving conditions. This ar-
rangement comes via technological advancesexperienced in the development for sister com-pany Land Rover in off-road traction systems, working like a low-level cruise control. Operat-ing between 2 MPH and 19 MPH, the systemis designed to precisely control brake and pow-ertrain systems to create optimum traction in allroad conditions.
The result is unparalleled stalk through theconcrete jungles, leaving drivers as the mastersof the road.

five-speed manual trans-mission than they couldwith the standard three-speed automatic trans-mission. However, auto-matic transmissions haveevolved over the years, and they are now moreadept at controlling revs
and conserving fuel thanmany drivers of manualtransmission vehicles.
when you fillup matters
Some drivers havelong believed that fill-ing up during the coolerhours of the day earnsthem more gas than fill-ing up when the tem-peratures are at theirpeak. This theory tracesits origins to the fact thatliquids are at their most
dense when they are cool. But todays filling stationsstore their gas in tanks be-neath the ground, whichis why you might see atanker emptying its con-tents into the ground atthe filling station. Theseunderground tanks areinsulated from tempera-ture swings, so you arentlikely to receive any moregas by filling up in themorning than you willwhen filling up at night.
an old vehicle
is destined to
be less fuel
efficient
Any product that isallowed to fall into dis-
repair will prove less ef-ficient than products thatare well maintained, andcars are no exception. Apoorly maintained carwill not operate at peakfuel efficiency becauseits likely being forced towork harder to get down
the street than it wouldif it was well kept. But awell-maintained vehicleshould not grow less fuelefficient over time.
shifting intoneutral whilestoppingsaves gas
This is another mis-conception that was oncetrue but no longer appliesthanks to advances in tech-nology. When engines stillhad carburetors, shifting
into neutral might havehelped conserve fuel bystopping the flow of gasinto the engine while thecar was idling. However, fuel injection systems arenow computerized andcapable of sensing whenan engine is revving aboveidle. This shuts off thefuel injectors, preventinggas from being injectedinto the engine and pre-venting gas from beingwasted while the vehicle isstopped as a result.
Taking steps to con-serve fuel is a good way
for drivers to save moneyand benefit the environ-ment. However, some ofthe conventional meansto conserving fuel are nolonger viable.
All new models, including the Jaguar F-PACE
(pictured) include the new Jaguar EliteCare
warranty, a 5-year, 60,000-mile program with free
scheduled maintenance and roadside assistance
within North America in the case of breakdowns,
accidents and minor problems like flat tires.

When faced with an array of ve-
hicles boasting four-wheel-drive
and all-wheel-drive, consumersoften wonder about the differences betweenthe two options or if there is any difference atall. Though similar, four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive are not quite the same.
Four-wheel-drive systems, often referred toas 4WD, trace their origins to the late 1800s. All-wheel-drive, or AWD, did not arrive until thelate 1970s, when an AWD system was used onan Audi vehicle for rally racing. Now many carsand trucks come with 4WD or AWD, particularlycrossovers and SUVs.
all-wheel-drive
Both drive systems engage all four wheelsat the same time to provide more traction. On
all-wheel-drive systems, the powering of thewheels is automatic and usually handled bythe electronic system of the car. Some vehiclesdrive in two-wheel-drive, but then engageAWD when sensors detect a need for moretraction and maneuverability. AWD providesstability, largely on roadways, and enables the
vehicle to modify the level of power to eitherthe front or rear wheels to improve traction asneeded. All-wheel-drive is adequate for manydrivers and situations.
four-wheel-drive
When operating four-wheel-drive vehicles, drivers may have to manually engage the system.True 4WD uses a transfer case mounted by therear of the transmission. A button or selector leveron older model SUVs would switch the vehicle
from 2WD to 4WD. Unlike in AWD systems, thefront and rear axles are locked together in 4WDsystems. 4WD systems are better for off-roading,rock-climbing and driving through mud and wa-ter. Individuals who participate in many off-roadrecreational activities will find that 4WD, espe-cially in vehicles with more gears, is more effec-
tive and provides better traction. It is important to note that, on icy or slippery
roads, neither AWD or 4WD systems assist withbraking or completely prevent cars from skiddingon slick surfaces. Having the ability to engage allfour wheels at the same time should not be usedas a replacement for cautious driving in inclem-ent weather.
Four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive bothprovide power to all four wheels on the vehicle
but have subtle differences that make each betterfor certain driving conditions.
Performance
Many drivers may find the idea
of keeping a vehicle
that hassurpassed the 100,000-milemark preposterous. However, perhapsdue to the rising cost of new vehicles, many drivers now recognize the ben-efits of keeping their vehicles for the longhaul. According to Polk research, many oftodays drivers are keeping their cars forlonger periods of time, with the averageage of all cars on the road being 11 years.
regular maintenance
is necessary
There are many benefits to keeping acar longer, including the financial impactof such a decision. In a recent survey andstudy from Consumer Reports, the savings
of keeping a vehicle for 225,000 miles over15 years versus purchasing and financingan identical model every five years equatedto a savings of more than the original pur-chase price of the car. A person can poten-
tially save $20,000 or more on a properly
maintained older car.Keeping a car running beyond 200,000miles was once pure luck. Cars made 10to 20 years ago might not have been upto the task. But improvements in rust pre-vention, lubricants and engine technologyhave made it easier for todays vehicles tolast longer. But as durable and reliable astodays cars may be, AAA notes the impor-tance of regular maintenance.
Knowing your car is one of the first waysto make sure it gets the service it needs.Over time, many drivers start to identifywarning signs, such as abnormal noises orif the vehicle simply feels off when out onthe road.
trusted advisors
Finding a mechanic that can be trustedis an important step for drivers who wantto keep their vehicles going strong for yearsto come. A driver is more likely to bring the

a number of componentsare working in concert toenable the vehicle to movesafely. At the heart of thesystem is a laser rangefinder mounted on the roofof the car. This laser gener-ates a detailed 3D map ofthe environment. The carthen combines these lasermeasurements with es-tablished high-resolutionmaps of the world.
The vehicle also employsother sensors in its technol-ogy. Radars mounted onthe front and rear bumpers
enable the car to detect itssurroundings. Cameras de-tect traffic lights, while GPSand inertial measurementunits will help to keep trackof the vehicles location andvarious movements. Data isalso programmed into thecar so it can differentiatestationary objects like polesand mailboxes from factorsin the environment, such aspedestrians or construction. The Google vehicles alsoare programmed to followroad rules and make as-sessments of changing situ-ations, such as advancing
at a four-way-stop if otherdrivers have not yet movedinto the intersection.
The goal of self-drivingcar manufacturers is toreduce congestion and ac-cidents and keep trafficflowing more smoothly.Automakers will continueto conduct research to seehow well self-driving carsand the people inside themwork together.

No matter what is stored in the
trunk,a drivers most preciouscargo is his or her passengers.
Never is that more apparent than whenchildren are on board.
Finding the right car seat can be chal-lenging. When used correctly, such seatscan reduce the risk of death by as muchas 71 percent, according the Safe KidsWorldwide organization. Whether youare buying a car seat for the first time orupgrading an existing seat as your childgrows, being informed can help with the
decision-making process.
access professional
reviews
A number of organizations rate avail-able car seats on the market. Consum-er Reports and the Insurance Institutefor Highway Safety are just two of thegroups that provide ratings that can takethe guesswork out of selecting the best
car seats. Regulations change frequently, and car seat engineers continually mod-ify designs to keep kids as safe as pos-sible. Frequently revisit car seat reviewsto check whether your seat is still receiv-ing high marks or if its time to invest ina new car seat.
rear-facing, longer
Many experts now advise keepingchildren in rear-facing car seats as long aspossible, even up to age two. These seats
are being manufactured to meet higherweight limits in the rear-facing position. However, always verify the exact heightand weight limit for the seat by readingthe information booklet or the safety datathat is printed directly on the seat.
In addition, know how to safely usethe seat, including which tethers should
be used in which seating positions. Chil-dren should sit in the back of the vehicleaway from airbags.

Vehicles have to share roadways
equally, but some vehicles tend totake up more space and make mo-
torists more nervous than others. Anyonewho has traversed a freeway has riddenalongside trucks. More than 70 percent ofaccidents involving trucks are the faultof the other vehicle, according to a studyfrom the U-M Transportation Research In-stitute that analyzed national crash dataon fatal two-vehicle accidents involvinga heavy truck. Accidents involving largetrucks frequently result in injuries. En-suring everyones safety means knowingsome of the rules of the road when trucksare present.
blind spots
Experienced drivers know the advan-tages of defensive driving techniques, espe-cially when riding alongside tractor-trailers.Despite their larger side view mirrors, largetrucks have much larger blind spots thanstandard cars, and knowing about blindspots is a great way to avoid accidents in-volving tractor-trailers. Avoid driving onthe right side of the truck in the front or rearof the vehicle.
The middle-left side of the truck is an-other spot to avoid, as trucks merging intolanes may not be able to see you when youare on the left flank of the truck. Similarly, trucks are typically required to drive in the
right lane of highways and will be chang-ing lanes frequently to get back into theright lane. Because passing on the right isnot allowed, driving in blind spots in theright lane can be dangerous for standard-size cars.
merging
As mentioned, the middle of an18-wheeler is a large blind spot, as is directly
behind the truck. When trucks are merginginto the roadway, give them plenty of space. You can flash your high beams to alert thetruck that you are slowing down and allow-ing the driver to cross in front of your car.Otherwise, move over into an open lane togive them a wide berth.
leave plenty of room
Give tractor-trailers plenty of roomwhen sharing the roadways. Tire blowoutson such trucks are quite common, as car-rying heavy loads can put a lot of stress ontires. Blowouts send shards of heavy rubberinto the air and roadway and can cause thetruck to swerve. The more space you leave
between your vehicle and the truck, the lesslikely you are to be involved in a blowout-related accident.
Another thing to keep in mind is thattrucks have a large amount of surface areathat can be blown around by the wind.Trucks can be difficult to control in the wind. Therefore, leave extra room on windy days;otherwise, you could find a truck driftinginto your lane.
wide turns
Trucks need to make wide turns to clearcurbs and roadside items. Therefore, truckdrivers need to swing left before makingright turns. Very often the driver will not be
able to see cars next to his trailer. The rightside of a truck can be extremely dangerousand has far more blind spots than the driv-ers side of the vehicle.
dont stop suddenly
A truck traveling behind you cannot stopand maneuver as quickly as a passenger ve-hicle. Try not to hit the brakes to avoid anobstacle in the road, or you may have a semi

The owners manual shouldnot be something that simply
takes up space inside the glovecompartment. It is worthyof a read. Understanding therecommended maintenanceschedule and what other stepscan be taken to prolong the lifeof the car can keep it on theroad longer. Keeping the tiresinflated to the proper pres-sure and using the right typeof gasoline are the types of in-formation that can be found inthe manual. Drivers can save alot of money on unnecessaryrepairs if they follow theseguidelines.
Many people are keepingtheir vehicles longer, reach-
ing mile marks that were onceunheard of. Investing in a carthat has a good track record oflongevity and then properlymaintaining the vehicle are nec-essary to getting the most out ofyour vehicle investment.
Drivers rarely think of the
tires on their vehicles untilthey have a flat, but the type of
tires on your vehicle can impact its per-formance. When choosing tires for theirvehicles, drivers should consider a hostof factors, including the terrain and driv-ing conditions vehicles are likely to en-counter. Understanding tires and whatmakes some a better fit than others forcertain vehicles can make for safe driv-ing and improved handling.
all-season tires
The most common type of tire and ar-guably the best known is the standard all-season tire. Many vehicles come equippedwith these tires, which are designed to beversatile enough to grip the road in variousconditions. They are commonly made of a
harder rubber that will not wear out quick-ly and will retain their tread. Most day-to-day driving can be done on all-season tires.
high-performance tires
People who live in dry climates or drive
sports and racing cars can benefit fromhigh-performance tires. These tires are spe-cifically designed to grip the road betterand offer superior handling under higherspeeds. Because high-performance tires aremade of a softer rubber compared to stan-dard tires, they will not last as long as all-season tires.
snow tires
People who live in snowy, icy condi-tions will benefit from the use of snowtires. These tires are designed with spe-cial treads to offer more traction in slip-pery conditions. The rubber used to man-ufacture the tire can remain flexible evenat extremely low temperatures. Winter
tires are best reserved for extreme weath-er and not used all season long becausethey will wear out more quickly than

How to
changea flat tire
Many drivers will experience a flat tire at some pointin their lives. Flat tires can be a nuisance, especially ifa flat leaves you stranded on the side of an empty road
with little opportunity for passing traffic to help you. Knowinghow to change your own tire can keep you from sitting on theside of the road waiting for a tow truck or fellow motorist.
There is no need to feel helpless when your vehicle gets a flat tire.Changing a flat tire is relatively easy and can take just a few minutesif you are prepared and know how to get the job done.
Turn on your emergency flashing hazard lights and pull the carsafely over to the side of the road where you will not be in thepath of traffic.
Try to find a level, stable surface so that the car will not roll.
Put the car in park and engage the emergency brake. Placebricks or wooden blocks under the tires on the opposite side toprevent the car from rolling.
If you have cones or flares, use them to make your vehicle morevisible to fellow motorists. This can save you from being struckwhile changing the flat.
Connect the jack handle to the rest of the device. Slide the jackunder a secure part of the car frame near the damaged tire.
Use a screwdriver to pry off the wheel cover or remove the hub-cap to gain access to the lug nuts on the tire.
Use your tire wrench to find the side of the wrench that matchesthe size of the lug nuts. Turn the wrench counterclockwise toloosen all the nuts. Loosen them until they can comfortably beremoved all the way by hand.
Use long strokes when pumping the jack to reduce the effort youhave to put. Lift the car up until the wheel clears the ground.
Remove the lug nuts and store them in a safe spot until later.Grasp the flat tire with both hands and pull it toward you until itclears the ends of the bolts. Roll the flat to the rear of the vehicle.
Lift the spare tire into place and slide it in completely over thebolts.
Replace the lug nuts and tighten them by hand.
Carefully lower the vehicle and remove the jack. Tighten the lugnuts completely with the wrench. Then replace the wheel cover.
Put the flat in the trunk for proper disposal or repair later on.
Remove the blocks from your tires and finally disengage theemergency brake.
You should now be ready to get back on the road.

others. Also, they may nothave the same level of trac-
tion on clear roads. In somecases, winter tires mayhave metal studs includedto enhance traction in icysituations. People who donot want to switch tireswhen cold weather arrivessometimes invest in snowchains that improve trac-tion on standard tires.
mud tires
Muddy areas can be justas slippery as snowy con-ditions. Mud tires are de-signed similarly to snow
tires but will have extragrooves and a tread patternthat facilitates movementof mud away from the tiresand road. Mud tires may bewider than standard tires aswell.
truck tires
Drivers of trucks or sport-utility vehicles often needspecial truck tires. Thesetires can better handle theweight and size of a largervehicle. Many drivers stickwith the type of tire thatoriginally came with their
truck. Drivers who like togo off-roading may need anall-terrain tire to offer moretraction when climbing hillsor traversing different con-ditions.
It can be easy to overlookthe importance of tires, butthe right tires help vehiclesremain on the road and canaffect mileage, maneuver-ability and safety.
Renting an automobile can be
practical for a variety of rea-
sons. City dwellers with easy access
to public transportation might not own avehicle and might choose instead to rent acar when the need arises. Men and womenwho are leasing a vehicle might rent a carfor a long trip to avoid exceeding the mile-age restrictions that come with their leases.Even drivers who own their vehicles mightrent a car in an effort to preserve their ownvehicles for resale.
Regardless of an individuals reason forrenting a car, there are certain things all rent-ers should know before taking the keys to theirnext rental.
your credit card company
might be insuring you
Drivers who have rented a car in the past
are aware that rental company employees at-tempt to sell renters insurance for the vehicle
before handing over the keys. While its defi-nitely smart to be insured, you may already
be insured if youre paying for the rental witha credit card. In fact, many rental agencies re-quire a major credit card for customers to booka reservation. Credit card companies providethis coverage at no extra cost to you, whichcan save you a substantial amount of money,as many rental agencies charge by the day forinsurance. Consult your credit card company
before renting the vehicle to see what, if any, coverage they offer. Some cards may not offercomplete coverage, but even partial coverage
will still save you money.
multiple drivers will cost
you money
If youre about to embark on a road trip andyou plan to have more than one driver, youcan plan to pay more as well. Each extra driveryou add to the rental agreement will cost anadditional fee. If you can make the trip with
just one driver, then you will save money. Donot list one driver but allow others to drive therental, as this might negate any insurance cov-erage you purchased from the rental agency orany coverage provided to you by an existingauto insurance policy or credit card company.
return the car with gas in
the tank
The rental agent will tell you how much fuelneeds to be in the car when its returned. The carmight need a full tank upon being returned, butmore likely that figure will be about one-quarterof a tank. Remember that figure (which should
be listed on your rental agreement) and do notcome in below it. You will pay a lot more pergallon if the rental agency has to put gas in thetank than if you just remember to do it yourself.
avoid renting at the airport
whenever possible
Though there might be some exceptions, rent-ing from an agency located at the airport is al-most always more expensive than renting froman off-airport location. Thats because the rentalagencies are required to charge customers anairport fee, which can be considerable. If yourestaying at a hotel in town, consider renting froman agency close to your hotel as opposed to oneat the airport. The savings might be considerable, and some locations might even come and pickyou up at the airport if you so desire.
dont sleep through the
vehicle inspection
Before you take the vehicle off the lot, a cus-tomer service representative from the rentalagency and you will examine the vehicle for any
damage, whether that damage is significant orminor. If you dont pay attention during this ex-amination and the company representative miss-es any damage, you could very well be blamedfor that damage when you return the vehicle.Company employees may be disinterested in theinspection, so its up to you to notice and reportany damage before you take the keys.
Renting a vehicle can be a convenient solu-tion for travelers who need a car. But driversshould exercise their due diligence to ensuretheyre getting the best deal possible.

Consumer Reports notes thatabout 80 percent of parents and
caregivers misuse car seats in oneway or another. Follow the direc-tions for safe seat placement andpositioning of tethers and safety
belts. You can watch videos onlineon how to install safety seats prop-erly, and many seat brands may di-rect you to an informational video. Some First Aid and police squadsoffer complimentary seat checks toreassure parents that seats are in-stalled correctly.
Older children in booster seats, which are designed to position pas-sengers correctly to make use of thevehicles seat belts, should have aproper fit. The lap belt should lie flat
and on top of the thighs. The shoul-der belt should rest directly in themiddle of the shoulder and not tooclose to the neck.
know the types
of seats
Children may go through threeor more safety seats before theyre
allowed to safely ride using thevehicles own passenger restraintsystem. In addition to infant carseats, manufacturers offer con-vertible seats, harnessed seats,
belt-positioning booster seats, andbuilt-in safety seats. Many childrenare ready to bid farewell to carseats when they reach about 4-feet-9-inches tall.
avoid used seats
Unless you can verify the fullcrash history of a car seat, it is bestto buy it new rather than from athrift store or on the Internet froma third party. Although car seatsdo not expire in the traditionalsense, they are stamped with a use-

may stretch. Its wise to replace carseats after several years and treata new baby in the family to his orher own car seat instead of using ahand-me-down.
Car seats can prevent injuries anddeath. Theyre one of the best safetyinvestments parents can make, aslong as theyre researched and usedproperly.

Though books should never be
judged by their covers, very of-ten individuals judge others by
the clothes they wear, the home theylive in and even the car they drive.
It can be interesting to examine what aparticular car says about the person behindthe wheel. More than 200 million driversare licensed in the United States and Cana-da, and these drivers choose their vehiclesfor a variety of reasons. Some choose ve-hicles because of their utility, while othersselect a particular car or truck because ofthe message it conveys. Very often driv-ers will idealize their vehicles, lendingthem human qualities or naming them asif they were a friend. Sometimes ownerswill seek attributes in a vehicle that mirrortheir own self-image.
A car says a lot about a person, saysDr. Charles Kenny, a consumer psycholo-gist who studies car buyers and theirneeds. Its a reflection of who you are.
Just think about the once-popular mini-van. Minivans once conveyed the image ofthe ideal family vehicle driven primarily
by mothers. But in recent years, minivansales have dipped so much that certain
brands no longer produce them. Manydrivers no longer want to present the im-age that comes with driving a minivan, compelling many to opt for crossoversand SUVs instead.
some truths in
stereotypes
Although there are some stereotypesattached to owning certain vehicles, sometruths lie beyond the jokes and banter.
Sports car owners can be flashy and craveattention. They may want to live on theedge with high speed or know their sleekrides will impress others on the road.High-end roadsters may make a statementabout financial status as well, as such carsare often among the most expensive ve-hicles on the road.
Sedan owners may be especially practi-cal people, as sedans are large enough to fit anumber of passengers, but theyre also afford-able and tend to boast good fuel economy.
Drivers of compacts and economy carscould fall into two categories. There arethose who are just starting out financiallyand may not be able to afford a larger ve-hicle, while others choose economy cars,
particularly hybrids and electric subcom-pacts, because such vehicles tend to bemore eco-friendly.
Sport-utility vehicles premiered as ve-hicles designed for sporting and off-road-ing. Not too long ago it was rare to seetoo many trucks on the roadways. Nowyoud be hard-pressed to find roadwaysthat arent flooded with SUVs. Mid-sizedSUVs have become the new minivan, making SUVs some of the most popularvehicles on the roads.
Functionality is the backbone of trucks.Truck owners generally have driven pick-ups most of their lives and tend to live inmore rural areas. Some will outfit theirtrucks with larger tires and lift kits, andthese drivers could be looking for power
and attention on the road.Luxury vehicles from manufacturers
like Lexus, Audi, Acura, BMW, and Jaguarare largely driven by white collar profes-sionals who have the cash to afford vehi-cles with all the bells and whistles. Luxurycars turn heads and can be status symbols. However, some luxury cars have becomemore attainable for those who purchasepre-owned vehicles or lease them, makingit difficult to tell who might be behind thewheel.
color
Its not just the make or model of acar that can say a lot about its driver.
Vehicle color also says a lot. For ex-ample, silver hints at a prestigious orelegant person. White cars are for thosewho like things clean and enjoy pristinesurroundings. Red cars indicate flashypeople who are willing to take risks, while orange cars are driven by thosewho are artistic and daring. Brownsand beiges can indicate drivers who aredown to earth and natural.
A vehicle can say many things about adriver before he or she even speaks a word.

barreling into the rear of your vehicle.
According to information from the DriveSafely site, trucks fully loaded may takeas much as the length of three footballfields to come to a complete stop whendriving at 60 miles per hour.
pass quickly
When passing a large truck, do so onlyon the left and do it as quickly as possi-
ble. This way you move out of the trucksblind spots promptly and avoid gettingcaught in a situation with a truck cominginto your lane because the driver doesntsee you.
practice self-
preservation
Trucks are much larger than cars, anda collision with a truck can result in thecar being trampled by the tires or slidingunderneath the rig. The Insurance Insti-tute for Highway Safety reports that 70percent of fatalities in accidents involv-ing a car and a truck were people in carsand not trucks. Do whatever you can tosteer clear of trucks and give them plentyof room, even if and when truck driversare in the wrong. It could mean the differ-ence between a pleasurable road trip anda potentially fatal accident.
trucks try tomaintain speed
When on roadways it can take a whilefor a truck to reach a cruising speed. Therefore, drivers will usually do whatthey can to remain at that speed. Other-wise the trickle-down-effect of brakingcould mean losing precious momen-tum, causing a backup on the roadwayand wasting expensive fuel. Therefore, atrucker will try to avoid hitting the brakesand could swerve quickly into a left laneto avoid a merging car. Truckers usuallyhold their speed and let the cars aroundthem adjust, which could make for somescary moments.
Trucks also may have speed governors
between 60 and 65 miles per hour. In suchinstances, they cannot move as fast whenpassing around other trucks and cars. If atruck seems like it is pacing another truckor car, it could just be because it is at maxspeed and the terrain doesnt allow thetruck to pass effectively. Patience is key inthis situation.
Driving with trucks requires driverssharing the roadways with trucks to bemore cautious and courteous. Cars aremuch more maneuverable than trucks, not to mention much more susceptible todamage in an accident.
