A message from the Principal

Week 8 Term 2

Parents/carers often ask me about how they can better support their pre-teenage boys. All children are very vulnerable in these increasingly digital and online times, with many of the potential risks still unknown or uncertain in the research. Despite this, sensible and active parenting is still very effective. I am currently coordinating some parent information sessions for next term, to discuss online/cyber safety and some strategies and tips for managing your pre – teen/teenage boys. Included with this newsletter are some useful tips for all parents to consider.

There are a raft of excellent resources available for parents/carers but I would like to recommend the following, http://www.itstimewetalked.com.au/parents/ which deals with teenagers and pornography. Please keep an eye on the newsletter and Facebook for dates of our next Coffee and Cake sessions where we will address some of these issues. If you need further information or resources, please don’t hesitate to contact the Learning and Support team at the school.

Congratulations to Jasmine Butterworth, Sarah Mooney and Eliza Pope who are representing our school on Friday 21 June at the Riverina Albury Dance Ensemble. These students auditioned to be a part of the group and have been training since Week 2 of the school year. An excellent achievement girls and all the best for your performance on Friday in Griffith.

Last week I received the following fabulous feedback regarding some of our students. Reece Mastellotto, Riverina PSSA Boys Football Coach has written to me to recognise the effort and achievement of Ryan kemp, Archie Drummond and Lenny Koller who recently attended the NSWPSSA Football carnival in Bathurst from 28 – 30 May this year. The team was placed equal 11th at the State Championships and the boys are commended for their excellent sportsmanship and positive behaviour on and off the field. They demonstrated a willingness to listen to feedback and play to the best of their ability in every game. Mr Mastellotto has praised the boys for being outstanding ambassadors for our school and the Riverina region. Well done, boys.

To supplement the learning in Stage 3 history and English units about the refugee experience in Albury, students in Years 5 and 6 have visited the Albury Library Museum this week. The 1 hour guided tour was led by local community guides from refugee backgrounds. The free tour was designed to give students and the community an understanding of the challenges that refugees faced coming to Australia. I am very grateful for the opportunity that the Library Museum has made possible for our students to visit and interact with this aspect of our history.

Well done to our K – 6 choir who attended “Tunes on Tuesday” at St Matthews Church this week. The performance sounded amazing and the students had a great time demonstrating their skills as a choir. Thanks also to Mrs Morris for her coordination of the event.

Regional Cross Country Carnival

Last Thursday the Regional Cross Country Carnival was held in Gundagai. The event was

held at the Gundagai Racecourse on a challenging course with a variety of terrain. The

Albury Zone sent a team of 30 runners, with 17 of these coming from APS. It was a great

day for our school as Thomas Mack won the 8/9 years boys and Seamus Bready won the

10 years boys races. By placing in the top six in their races; George Paton, Tom Sheather,

Isabelle Rae, Fin Bready and Oliver Mack will represent the Riverina Region, along with

Thomas Mack and Seamus, at the State Carnival being held in Sydney on 26 July. All of

our runners put in a tremendous effort and they should all be very proud of their

achievements. Congratulations to all our runners and good luck to the 7 students who

are going onto the state carnival.
