The Evolution of DSL Deployment

1

High speed Internet access is the

foundation upon which broadband

networks are built, but it takes more

than access to attract and retain new

customers. Service providers need

an access management platform that

enables advanced revenue-generating

services for business and residential

customers, protects existing investments,

and provides guaranteed bandwidth.

With its multiple classes of digital

subscriber line (DSL) service, interop-

erability with legacy equipment,

multiple ATM QoS capabilities, and IP

functionality, the Alcatel 7300 ASAM is

the answer for DSL deployment.

With the largest installed base of

DSLAMs in the world, Alcatel designed

the new, low profile Alcatel 7300 ASAM

LP to seamlessly integrate with these

systems and with the 70 million lines

currently being served by Alcatel or

third party digital loop carriers (DLCs).

As DSL proliferation continues in the

central office (CO), service providers

will need to focus on remote deploy-

ment of DSL to ensure continued

success. The Alcatel 7300 ASAM LP

accomplishes this by integrating into

the existing network infrastructure.

Service providers can mix the Alcatel

7300 ASAM LP shelves with legacy

shelves in the field to create a single

system that delivers enhanced function-

ality while preserving past investments

in voice infrastructure. Beyond hardware

interconnectivity and software consis-

tency, the systems also share a single

management system, simplifying the

integration of the Alcatel 7300 ASAM

LP into the DSL network.

Feature SummaryThe Alcatel 7300 ASAM LP helps to

leverage existing infrastructure by

installing easily into existing DLC

cabinets. It is a proven adjunct solution

as a DLC overlay. This highly deployable

platform offers a port density of up

to 24 lines per card. The Alcatel 7300

ASAM LP scales to 5,000 lines per

network interface. Its power consump-

tion of 1.6 watts per line is the lowest

in the market.

The Alcatel 7300 ASAM LP features a

wide variety of interfaces. They include

DSL interfaces (asymmetric DSL (ADSL),

G.lite, G.shdsl), network interfaces

(DS3, OC-3), and subtending interfaces

(DS1, inverse multiplexing over ATM

(IMA), DS3, OC-3).

2

The advanced features of the Alcatel

7300 ASAM LP include support of vir-

tual circuit (VC) aggregation, switched

virtual circuits (SVCs), IP multicast,

virtual private networks (VPNs),

multiprotocol label switching (MPLS),

and multiple levels of ATM QoS,

including unspecified bit rate (UBR),

constant bit rate (CBR), variable bit

rate VBR), and guaranteed frame

rate (GFR).

The Alcatel 7300 ASAM LP is a true

carrier class device, offering integrated

test access and redundancy. It can oper-

ate in extreme temperatures and is listed

with Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

ArchitectureThe Alcatel 7300 ASAM family can

contain as few as 12 DSL lines, or as

many as 2,592 lines sharing a common

network interface. This number can

go up to 10,000 by subtending shelves.

An Alcatel 7300 ASAM can manage the

Alcatel 1000 Remote Access Multiplexer

(RAM), the Alcatel 7300 DSL Remote

Access Platform (RAM), the Alcatel

1000 ASAM Mini-Remote Access

Multiplexer (M-RAM), and the Alcatel

7300 ASAM LP. This extends the reach

and capabilities of DSL to remote

customers and increases the number of

customers served by a single network

interface. A broad range of network and

subtending interfaces are available.

The Alcatel 7300 ASAM LP, designed

primarily for remote deployment,

provides service for 144 lines per shelf

and 288 lines per adjunct cabinet. One

rack can contain 432 lines for central

office or controlled environment vault

deployment as well. With the ability

to provide ADSL, full rate SHDSL,

IP-multicast, VPN, and aggregation,

100 percent DSL penetration is possible

with a complete service portfolio. The

full range of QoS for delivery of business

services, video, and voice over DSL

(VoDSL) make the Alcatel 7300 ASAM

LP a full service remote solution.

Including other DLCs into the adjunct

local connection saves on facilities

costs, and the standards-based architec-

ture of the ASAM family helps achieve

service ubiquity with the existing DSL

network. The integration of the Alcatel

7300 ASAM LP into existing ASAM

networks requires no new methods,

procedures, or equipment practices.

Expanding the Power of the Access Platform

3

The IP Services Module (ISM) is the

first of this line of products to offer IP

and broadband remote access server

(BRAS) functions and features, like

IP multicast, VC aggregation, and local

Ethernet connectivity in the access

network. The ISM is a two-slot line

termination card that slides into the

front of the Alcatel 7300 ASAM.

The ISM enables video multicast serv-

ices with Internet group management

protocol (IGMP) at the edge. This signif-

icantly increases delivery capabilities

and reduces network congestion. The

growth of broadband services like video

is driving the requirement for more

intelligent IP-based devices that provide

differentiated access services.

As more ADSL technology is deployed,

scalability and efficiency become critical

issues. The ISM is a multiservice access

concentrator platform based on the

Alcatel 7404 Broadband Access Server

(BAS). It provides termination of ATM

encapsulation, session management,

and IP layer filtering and forwarding.

The adapter optimizes provisioning

and network management with VC

aggregation while it opens Ethernet

connectivity to the Alcatel 7300 ASAM

LP, providing open access to both

ATM and IP networks for distributed

content servers.

4

TroubleshootingDSL deployments can require in-depth

troubleshooting. If subscriber loops are

too long, they may be unsuitable for

DSL service. Load coils, bridge taps, or

wideband noise on the line can cripple

DSL service performance. Diagnosing

such problems may require costly truck

deployments and the expertise of

senior technicians. This may result in

delays of several weeks, dissatisfied

customers, lost revenues, and higher

operational costs.

To overcome these issues, service

providers need a streamlined deploy-

ment process. Alcatel’s integrated test

access capabilities provide visibility

of the entire network before lines

are put in service. This allows line

qualification without false positive

or false negative results.

Better tools can help providers qualify,

test, and troubleshoot DSL services

more efficiently. Tools that can be used

proactively help service providers to

identify potential customers and eligible

services and to pinpoint problems early.

As a result, installations proceed

smoothly and quickly, with minimal

deployment delays and lower

operating costs.

Unsurpassed QoS The Alcatel 7300 ASAM LP supports

permanent virtual circuit (PVC)

connections provisioned by network

operators, and SVC connections set up

and managed by the user application

when needed. Users gain greater flexi-

bility in accessing multiple applications

offered by various content providers.

Network operators gain traffic capacity

and simplified provisioning.

The Alcatel 7300 ASAM LP is built

around an ATM architecture that

supports a variety of ATM service

classes including CBR, UBR and UBR+,

real time and non real-time variable bit

rate (rt-VBR and nrt-VBR), and GFR.

This gives service providers exceptional

flexibility in service offerings. These

offerings can range from low cost, low

priority residential services to premium

business access with large bandwidth

requirements, such as LAN-to-LAN,

VPNs, streaming video, and audio.

All of these service offerings have

guaranteed performance.

Reach All PotentialSubscribersIn a fast growing mass market like DSL,

the first provider to the customer wins.

The Alcatel 7300 ASAM and Alcatel 7300

ASAM LP deliver maximum scalability

for small to large system deployments

that allow service providers to reach

more of their potential DSL customers,

whether they are served by a CO or

by remote facilities. The operator can

quickly achieve broad geographic

coverage with small systems, and

extend the capacity of these systems at

the pace of growing customer demand.

The system is temperature hardened so

it can be reliably deployed in extreme

temperature environments or in office

buildings. These capabilities, along

with the multiple DSL types, mean

that service providers can service more

customers and have more flexibility

to meet their demands.

The diagram below illustrates the

versatility of the Alcatel 7300 ASAM

and the Alcatel 7300 ASAM LP. It shows

the host Alcatel 7300 ASAM acting both

as a local DSLAM serving customers

directly connected to the CO, and as

an aggregation and service node for

remote ASAMs that include already

installed RAMs and mini-RAMs, and

new Alcatel 7300 ASAM LP deployments.

SummaryThe Alcatel 7300 ASAM LP is the next

step in the evolution of DSL deploy-

ment. With its flexible interfaces, ease

of deployment, carrier class service

capabilities, and advanced networking

features it meets the many challenges

of DSL networking today and for

the future.
