Ethernet Business ServicesEnterprise customers are conducting anincreasing amount of their business elec-tronically, using information and com-munications technology (ICT) to drivesales, improve customer relationships, train staff and simplify procurement. This is being done over metro, nationaland international boundaries. Enterpriseswant convenience, simplicity andflexible bandwidth across the wide areanetwork, but with the quality of serviceand control that is critical for businessnetworking applications like video, voiceand data. Enterprises are turning to theirservice providers for help with theircommunications challenges.

Fortunately, the Alcatel-Lucent solutionenables service providers to respond tothese needs with Ethernet-based businessservices, such as virtual private LANservices (VPLS) and virtual leased line(VLL). These services enable enterprisecustomers to increase business servicesand reduce costs, thanks to the opera-tional cost benefits of Ethernet and thepredictable quality of service (QoS)characteristics of multiprotocol labelswitching (MPLS).

Ethernet virtual private networks(VPNs) complete the service providerservice mix — ensuring that they canconfidently mix and match Layer 2 andLayer 3 VPN services based on whattheir customers want. VPLS expandsthe next-generation VPN service marketand enables service providers to offertheir customers a Layer 2 multipointservice that provides higher bandwidththan frame relay, with the same QoS asframe relay or ATM. Also, unlike IP-VPNs, which require the enterprise toshare routing information, VPLS allowsthe enterprise to retain routing controland provides the flexibility to supportmultiple protocols, in addition to IP,that are present in many enterprisenetworks.

With a next-generation VPLS imple-mentation, service providers can tailorservice definitions that directly alignwith the customers’ business objectivesand thereby create value. The Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS delivers VPLS todaywith the ability to have differentapplications run within a single VPLSservice with distinct service level agree-ments (SLAs), as well as an aggregateSLA for each customer. This greaterdegree of control for service leveldifferentiation is delivered throughan extensive QoS implementation, including hierarchical QoS (H-QoS)as illustrated in Figure 2.

Triple Play Residential ServicesA burgeoning new market exists for Ethernet in the aggregation ofconsumer triple -play services (see Figure 3). The aggregation networkneeds to be optimized to meet the demands of voice, video and high-speed Internet services, and above all it must be extremely scalable tosupport the kinds of subscriber numbers inherent in a consumer-oriented service. For this market, VPLS is used as an enabling under-lying technology in the network infrastructure to provide scalabilityand reliability. Traditional Ethernet would be constrained by thelimited number of virtual LANs that can be supported with spanningtree protocol; VPLS overcomes these limitations.

The Service ProviderChallengeThese two distinct markets — Ethernet businessservices and triple play residential services —generate a challenging list of requirementsfor service providers:• High scalability in terms of number of

subscribers and services• High reliability — only carrier-class (99.999

percent) reliability will do• Support for multiple QoS levels and the

ability to monitor per-service QoS• Ability to guarantee services on a per-

customer, per-service or per-application basis

For service providers to compete effectively, they must be able to:• Match their business service offerings to each

enterprise’s specific requirements• Meet the demands of the residential sector

with integrated service provisioning andstreamlined service, policy and subscribermanagement

• Turn up new services quickly• Grow and adapt their service offerings

on the fly

To succeed in today’s network landscape, service providers need a carrier-class Ethernetservice switch. Traditional, enterprise-focusedEthernet switches were developed to providebest-effort connectivity; they simply don’t havewhat it takes to survive — and thrive — in theservice provider environment. That’s wherethe Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS comes in.

The Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS is the industry’s firstEthernet service switch with carrier high availability.More than ever, high availability is at the forefront ofthe service provider’s criteria for consumer and businessEthernet services. The demand for high availability hasbeen most pronounced at the service provider edge wherethousands of connections are hosted and availabilityoptions may be limited for WAN Ethernet services andservice-aware Ethernet aggregation for consumer triple-play services.

The Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS architecture has beendeveloped to meet the stringent requirements for sup-porting mission-critical applications and services, and anumber of high availability features have been designedinto the 7450 ESS:• Non-Stop Routing — The Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS

provides true stateful resiliency of the interior

gateway protocol (IGP) routing processes such thatall topology information and adjacencies are main-tained even in the event of a failure of one SF/CPM.The 7450 ESS supports non-stop routing for openshortest path first (OSPF) and intermediate system-to-intermediate system (IS-IS).

• Non-Stop Services — The Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESSalso provides stateful resiliency for protocols that runover the IGP such as MPLS. The 7450 ESS supportsnon-stop services for VPLS and VLL using tunnelscreated by label distribution protocol (LDP), targetedLDP, generic routing encapsulation (GRE) and staticlabel switched path (LSP) tunnels.

• Graceful Restart Helper — This feature improvesavailability in cases where the Alcatel-Lucent 7450ESS is peering with routers not otherwise capable ofnon-stop routing or services.

Services You Can Bank OnAs we’ve seen, the Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS providesthe kind of technological advances required to operatein a service provider environment. Table 2 describes howthe Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS enables Ethernet servicesthat address the service provider’s inter-region andnationwide requirements.

The Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS can also be a keycomponent in a network design that calls for serviceinterworking between frame relay/ATM and Ethernet. The Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS can deliver and receiveEthernet traffic from the Alcatel-Lucent 7670 RoutingSwitch Platform (RSP), which handles the serviceinterworking. With service interworking, providers candeploy the most appropriate access technology at eachsite in the network. This enables them to maintaincurrent service offerings where appropriate, while provid-ing new Ethernet-based services over the same VPN.The ability to provide a unified frame relay/ATM toEthernet VPN is critical for service providers who wantto offer high-speed Ethernet services, and protect theirexisting network investment and customer services.

A CompellingBusiness CaseThe numbers are in and the businesscase is clear: deploying Ethernet businessservices using the Alcatel-Lucent 7450ESS is a wise investment. Alcatel-Lucent’s analysis, conducted using fairlyconservative estimates for growth, indicate that even considering the initialsetup costs, service providers can expectto achieve a positive cash flow withinthe first two years of implementingEthernet business services using theAlcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS.

Whether the need is for VPLS or VLLservices alone, or these services bundledwith Internet access, the business case issolid. Major factors contributing to thispositive projection are the operationalefficiency improvements and serviceassurance enabled by Alcatel-Lucent’sservice-aware OA&M toolkit, template-based provisioning and the superiorservice management support provided
