1. Harrisville Depot (West end of Dock Street in Harrisville)
In 1883 Russell Algerformed the Detroit, Bay Cityand Alpena Railroad. In1895, he combined it withthe Alpena and Northern toform the Detroit andMackinaw Rail Company. In 1900 depot sites were selectedat Greenbush and Harrisville. Scheduled passenger servicebegan on December 15, 1901. The following month the newcut stone Harrisville Depot was completed. Service betweenBay City and Alpena continued until March 31, 1951.
2. The Old Place Inn (309 E. Main St., Harrisville)The building was constructedin the 1870s as a privateresidence for Joseph Evans,the first sheriff of AlconaCounty. Upon his death in1899, his wife had thebuilding remodeled and ran it as the Cottage Hotel until 1935,the Harrisville Hotel until 1964, the El Dorado Restaurantuntil 1973, the Harbor Lights Restaurant until 1981, and theOld Place Inn in 1988. The restaurant is currently closed.
3. Hollyhock Quilt Shoppe (301 E. Main St., Harrisville)The land was purchased byJoseph Evans on March 26,1875. He erected the AlconaHouse hotel. In 1907 thebuilding was remodeled andbecame a drug store. In 1909it became the site of TheCitizens Telephone Company. The store is currnetly closed.4. Westminster Presbyterian Church (201 Second St., Harrisville)The congregation wasorganized on September 10,1878 by the Reverend D. vanDyke. The church was builtin 1879 on land donated byGeorge W. Colwell, one ofthe owners of the Harrisvillesawmill. The church closedin 1895. In 1906, the churchreopened with the Reverend C.M. Boyce as pastor until 1933.Boyce and his successors have served the “yoked”Presbyterian Churches in Alcona County: Harrisville, HaynesTownship [until 1969], and Spruce.
5. Harrisville United Methodist Church (217 N. State St., Harrisville)The Reverend Joseph P. Merchant came to Harrisville as amissionary in 1861. He formed membership classes that metin a one story house at the foot of Church Street, then at a newschool house on Court House Square.
8. Craftmakers’ Cabin (217 N. State St., Harrisville)
The cabin was built as a WPAproject in 1936 to house theResort and InformationBureaus. The rustic 22’ x 32’log structure features astaircase with a large curvedlog for a handrail, flattened logsteps, and a massive stone
fireplace with a log mantel. On July 31, 1982 it became anoutlet for homemade arts and crafts.
10. Seaver Country House (311 S. McLean Rd., HarrisvilleTwp.)
***Please note this is a Private Residence***Bertha Moe “Birdie”Seaver, recently widowed,vacationed at Springport Innin 1929. She bought avacant 120-acre farm andimmediately hiredcontractors to begin toenlarge and renovate the
11. Springport Inn (659 S. US-23, Harrisville Township)Joseph van Buskirk built theInn in 1877 to become hishome. Joseph had moved toHarrisville in late 1864, after3½ years of Union Armyservice during the Civil War.In Harrisville, van Buskirkacquired 1800 acres of timber, became a lumberman and soonbecame wealthy. His settlement at Springport had a saw mill,a lumber shipping pier, a general store, and a dairy farm. TheInn was situated where he could oversee it all.
12. Springport Cemetery (US-23 at Wallace Rd, Harrisville Township)Dating from before 1852, thisis the oldest cemetery in AlconaCounty. The wife of carpenterWilliam Higginson was the firstperson to be interred here.Many other early settlers are
13. Lincoln Depot and Museum (Lake Street at Fisk Street, Lincoln)The Lincoln Train Depot,once called the “WestHarrisville Depot,” wasbuilt in 1886 by the Detroit,Bay City and AlpenaRailroad. It is the last
14. Lincoln United Methodist Church (101 E. Main St., Lincoln)The Methodist ChurchSociety was organized priorto 1890. A weekly SundaySchool was established tomeet in private homes. OnOctober 3, 1896, the Societybought a lot and proceeded tobuild the church. It wascompleted in 20 months. Themen donated the labor and the women raised the money. TheRev. F.S. Ford held the dedication service on June 27, 1898.
15. First Baptist Church of Lincoln (202 E, Main St., Lincoln)In 1891, Alice Walker secureda minister to preach to the menat the Robert Walker LumberCamp. West Harrisville BaptistChurch was established with 16charter members. The churchbuilding was built in 1893 anddedicated in February 1895. In1897 the Harrisville andLincoln congregations weremerged to became the FirstBaptist Church of Lincoln.
In 1907, several GermanLutheran families organized acongregation near Mud Lake.The first church was a one-storyshingled log house. A towerwas added to house a large and

beautifully toned bell. A Baptist congregation bought an emptychurch in Mikado and had it moved to Barton City using sixteams of horses and log rollers. When the Baptist congregationfailed, the church was purchased by Augusta Kohlman andgiven to the Trinity Lutheran Church. It was dedicated in1937.
The present church, the firstin Alcona County, was builtin 1867. Membershipincluded early settlers namedConklin, Colwell,LaChapelle, Rutson and VanBuskirk. The organ datesfrom 1891.

farm house into a lavish new house. In 1930 Bertha went toEurope and brought back furnishings for the house. Beforecoming to Alcona, Mrs. Seaver had never lived or worked ona farm. Nevertheless, she named her acquisition “Five TreesFarm,” With the help of Percy Somers, she became a sheeprancher. They became agricultural pioneers in Alcona County.A flock of purebred Hampshire sheep was started and FiveTrees Farm became a truly world-class sheep ranchingoperation for 27 years.
6. Alcona County Review (111 Lake St., Harrisville)The first edition of theReview was published onApril 27, 1877 by foundingpublisher James K.Fairchild, who brought awagon load of printingmaterial from Standish. The original building burned downin 1907, but was rebuilt in 1908 using updated materials (brickand tin), to make it the first “fireproof” building Harrisville.It has the distinction of being the oldest operating business inAlcona County.7. Harrisville Business District (sign at East end of Main St.)In 1846, Simeon Holden & otherswere driven ashore by a northwestgale to the High Banks of theAuSable, now called Springport.These men purchased pine landsand built a small water mill, and commenced the firstmanufacture of lumber in Alcona County. This signcommemorates the variety of businesses establishedthroughout the years in Harrisville, including that very firstsawmill.
9. St. Anne Parish (110 S. State St., Harrisville)
Father Frederic Baraga, the “snowshoe priest,” was an early settler inMichigan’s upper peninsula and onits northeastern Huron shore.Baraga was already proficient intribal Indian languages by the timehe was ordained a priest in 1823. In
1853, Father Baraga was elevated to bishop and became thefirst bishop of Sault Sainte Marie. In 1867, he accepted thedeed to the property that Francis La Chapelle donated for thebuilding of the first Roman Catholic church to be built inHarrisville, in 1868.
