Brett Richardson enters his fifth season as the head baseball coach at Alcorn State University after spending the better part of the past 18 years as an assistant coach and interim head coach at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fla.

Director of Athletics Derek Horne announced the selection of the Tallahassee native, as the new

leader of the Braves’ baseball program in late August of 2015. "We are excited to have Coach Richardson join our staff. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with our student-athletes. We have an experienced team returning and look forward to him stepping in and shaping our baseball team into a competitive program."

In his first two seasons leading the Braves, Coach Richardson guided the program to a 28-69 record overall with a 17-30 mark in conference play. In Richardson's first year at the helm, the team earned three non-conference wins over Tougaloo College. In league play, the Braves posted a 2-1 series win over Alabama A&M and a 3-0 sweep of Mississippi Valley State. At the SWAC Championship in New Orleans, Alcorn took a back-and-forth battle with Grambling State 8-7 in the opening round of the Tournament. Designated hitter Cedric Bell was named to the All-Conference Second Team after recording 31 hits, four doubles, a triple, three home runs, and 25 RBIs on the season.

During the 2017 campaign, Alcorn split a four-game non-conference series against Butler and won a pair of three-game league contests 2-1 versus Mississippi Valley State. The postseason saw the squad claim an 11-inning match with Grambling 7-6 in the opening round of the 2017 SWAC Championship Tourney. Wallace Rios Jiminez was named to the All-Conference First Team and Jason Sanez received Second Team honors.

In 2019, the purple and gold split a four-game non-conference series against Richardson's alma mater (Florida A&M), sweeping a rain-shortened two-game series versus Alabama A&M, took two-of-three at Mississippi Valley State, swept the season series with Tougaloo and took a pair of contests against Jackson State which included an 18-4 rout of the Tigers in Jackson. The Braves earned a #3 seed out of the SWAC's Eastern Division in the conference tournament.

Richardson’s ties to FAMU dates back to his playing days in the early 1990s, when he was a catcher on the Rattlers’ Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title winners in 1990, 1991 and 1992.

After spending five seasons as an assistant baseball coach at Tallahassee Lincoln High School (1992 to 1997), Richardson returned to FAMU to begin his collegiate coaching career, first as a graduate assistant under head coach Joe Durant in August of 1998.

Richardson eventually earned full-time status in 2000, combining the duties of pitching coach and recruiting coordinator, with his various responsibilities as assistant coach. He was named Interim Head Coach at Florida A&M in May of 2010. The following season, Richardson led the Rattlers to back to the MEAC Tournament after a two-year absence, and after a brief hiatus, returned as an assistant coach during the 2013 season.

Richardson joined coach Jamey Shouppe’s staff in 2014, and his responsibilities have included the development of the Rattlers’ hitters and catchers; coaching third base; assisting in recruiting; overseeing the academic eligibility process for team members, and other administrative duties. He was also influential in helping the program rebound from consecutive 7-win seasons to win 26 games in 2014, including the programs first-ever wins over the No. 6 ranked Florida Gators and the University of North Florida. In 2015, Richardson and Florida A&M won its first MEAC title, earning the school its first NCAA Regional appearance.

“Brett has given so much to the program at FAMU, he is such a special, special man,” Florida A&M head baseball coach Jamey Shouppe said moments after the Rattlers clinched the 2015 MEAC title.

Richardson holds a B.S. in Health and Physical Education from FAMU (1997), and also holds a Master’s in Education (Sports and Leisure Management) from FAMU (2001). Coach Richardson has three daughters, Jasmine, 18, Jada, 15, and Jordyn, 10.

In his first full season as the pitching coach, Fuentes oversaw senior starting pitcher Carlos Lopez breaking the school's all-time strikeout record as well as helping closer Austin Atwood finish second in the SWAC for saves. Two pitchers, Bukhari Brown and Carlos Lopez, earned SWAC Pitcher of the Week awards under his watch.

Ryan Fuentes spent a lot of time on the mound during his playing days at Willie E. “Rat” McGowan Stadium, and now will make his second stint with the Alcorn State University baseball program and first as assistant coach, announced by head coach Bretton Richardson. Fuentes, a four-year letterwinner at Alcorn, was the workhorse pitcher for the Braves in 2014. He tossed 100.0 innings and sported a team-best 3.69 ERA with a 5-4 record. Fuentes threw six complete games that season which ranked fourth in the nation.

Fuentes carried a 4.79 career ERA over his four years. “I am very proud and excited to be back at my alma mater. Some of my greatest memories and accomplishments in baseball happened here at Alcorn. I’m striving to help bring the program back to a championship standard like it was in my playing days,” Fuentes said. Fuentes was a part of Alcorn’s only postseason championship as he registered three wins and a save in 2011. The Braves went on to win the SWAC Championships that season and make their only NCAA Regionals appearance in school history. “Ryan will be a great addition to our staff, especially since he is an alumnus and member of the 2011 championship team. He knows exactly the type of effort and approach that we need to get back to championship form,” Richardson said. “We’re very happy to have him back in our dugout and working with our student-athletes.” Fuentes returns to The Reservation after spending the last two years as a graduate assistant coach at Grambling State. He helped coach the Tigers to the SWAC West Division title in 2017 with a 15-9 conference record. Fuentes and GSU posted another winning season last year with a 14-10 league mark. Fuentes was on staff when GSU head coach James Cooper won SWAC Coach of the Year in 2017. A native of Euless, Texas, Fuentes graduated from Alcorn in 2015 with a Bachelor’s degree in biology. He earned his Master’s degree sports administration from GSU.

In Alcorn’s Last Outing...

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Alcorn State University baseball program got a stellar pitching performance from senior Bukhari Brown but the Braves bats stalled in a 4-1 defeat to Prairie View A&M, ending the 2019 campaign.

In his final career start as a Brave, Bukhari Brown (3-7) got saddled with a tough luck loss. The native of Byram, Mississippi went 8.0 strong innings, allowing only four runs on eight hits while whiffing five Panther batters.

Sophomore Edward Jackson drove in the lone run of the contest with an RBI single to dead center in the fifth.

Senior Brendly Martina was the only Brave to cross the plate, hitting a two-out triple in the process.

Senior Brandon Barna and junior Jordan McGowan picked up the team's other two hits on the day.

Through the first four innings the pitchers were dealing, as PVAMU's starter Tyler Laux did not surrender a hit while Alcorn's Bukhari Brown had only given up one run and three hits, 1-0 Prairie View.

Bretton Richardson's club recorded its first hit of the contest via a Martina two-out triple in the fifth and subsequently got its run one pitch later as Edward Jackson smacked an RBI single to knot the score at one.

The pitchers went back to dominating through the start of the eighth as the two hurlers combined to surrender only three hits in that span.

The Panthers pulled ahead with three runs in the top of the eighth and Alcorn went three-up, three-down over the final two frames as Prairie View ended the Braves season with a 4-1 win over the boys from Lorman.

Alcorn baseball finishes the year with a record of 14-31 and 7-16 in the SWAC.

ABOUT ALCORN STATE UNIVERSITYAlcorn is the oldest public historically black land-grant institu-tion in the United States and the second-oldest state-supported institution of higher learning in Mississippi. Alcorn University was founded in 1871 as a result of the people of Mississippi’s efforts to educate the descendants of formerly enslaved Africans. It was named in honor of the sitting governor of Mississippi, James L. Alcorn.

Alcorn is situated in Claiborne County, seven miles west of Lorman, 80 miles south of the capital city of Jackson, 45 miles south of Vicksburg, and 40 miles north of Natchez. The site was originally occupied by Oakland College, a school established by Presby-terians in 1828; the state of Mississippi purchased the Oakland campus for $40,000 and named it Alcorn University. Hiram R. Revels resigned his seat as a United States senator to become the University’s first president. The state legislature provided $50,000 cash annually for the University’s first 10 years to support its estab-lishment and overall operation. Additionally, 30 acres of land were sold for $188,928; Alcorn received three-fifths of the proceeds, or $113,400. This funding was used for Alcorn’s agricultural and mechanical components.

Initially, the institution’s three major study components were the four-year college track, the two-year college track, and the three-year graded track. Students spent the morning, from seven o’clock until noon, in classes. In the afternoon, they worked in various University shops for eight cents per hour. Room and board, includ-ing laundry, cost about $5 a month.

In 1878, Alcorn University became Alcorn Agricultural and Me-chanical College. The college was exclusively for males at first, but eventually women were admitted. A dormitory for women was built in 1902. Over time, facilities increased from three historic buildings to more than 80 structures. The original purchase of 225 acres of land grew to a campus of more than 1,700 acres.

In 1974, Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College became Alcorn State University. Governor William L. Waller signed House Bill 298, granting this status. Alcorn has thrived by continuously accomplishing dynamic goals and objectives despite limited

resource allocations from the state. By the early 1990s, Alcorn’s physical plant and academic programs evolved into a more diversi-fied University. The student population is now representa-tive of more than 65 counties, more than 30 states, and at least 18 foreign countries. The Uni-versity provides an undergraduate edu-cation that enables students to success-fully pursue work in graduate and professional schools, engage in teaching, and enter other professions.

As Mississippi recognized the importance of educating all citizens, Alcorn has gained status and importance. From the original eight faculty members in 1871, the University has grown to more than 800 faculty and staff. The student body has increased from 179 students to more than 4,000 students with varied ethnic back-grounds. Although early graduates of Alcorn had limited horizons, today’s graduates are successful in their chosen professions, and many are outstanding entrepreneurs. Throughout Alcorn’s history, the leadership and faculty remained committed to enhancing the institution’s image and to attracting young people whose interest is the pursuit and receipt of a quality education. Over the decades, “the college that excelled against great odds” has become one of the leading universities in the nation. Alcorn State University oper-ates divisions with degree programs in more than 50 areas, includ-ing the bachelor’s, master’s, and educational specialist degrees.

The collaborative strength and contributions of Alcorn’s past 18 presidents during its more than 140 years of existence have enabled the institution to excel. On March 4, 2014, the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Alfred Rankins Jr. as Alcorn State Uni-versity’s 19th president. President Rankins' background and vision are strategically aligned with Alcorn’s history and tradition. He is poised to expeditiously move Alcorn State University to the next level of excellence.
