The spring semester has officially sprung into action and warm weather is (hopefully) in sight. Though classes have just started, things can already start to look pretty overwhelm- ing. Thankfully, there are many resources that UMD offers in order to have an amazing and successful semester! One of the most important and often neglected resources UMD offers is the Counseling Center. If you are struggling person- ally or academically, making an appointment with the Coun- seling Center is one of the most beneficial things you can do. The Counseling Center provides psychological expertise to help you overcome certain obstacles in your life. Best of all, these sessions are confidential and free. The Academic Coaching program is another free feature of the Counseling Center, helping students learn ef- fective study strategies and improve their overall academic performance. Additional tutoring can be acquired through UMD’s Academic Support and Tutoring website, at https:// cmns.umd.edu/undergraduate/academic-support-tutoring. This site provides many links to different tutoring services offered by UMD that are tailored to specific majors and in- terests. However, if you are unsure about a particular major or believe your interests lie somewhere other from the path that you are currently on, the Career Center can be a great resource. The Career Center offers a checklist for your cho- sen career to ensure you’re on the right path, lists internship opportunities, and provides career exposure activities. Addi- tionally, the Career Center helps students pick a career if they are unsure of the path they want to pursue. This is a great resource to use if you want to explore a new field of interest or to find opportunities in general. Of course, flu and allergy season is also approach- ing. That is why it is important to get familiar with the Uni- versity Health Center. This resource not only has doctors that will see you when you’re ill, but they also provide ex- tensive mental health and dental services. The Health Center has many wellness programs as well that can ensure that you remain healthy during your time at UMD and live a balanced life. These resources are extremely useful and accessible as a UMD student. Make sure you take advantage of them as needed and start the semester off on a good foot! “Nothing is slower than a sick turtle.” You’ve probably seen these signs up around Eppley and the Health Center, and they’re especially relevant this time of year! The start of the spring semester is a busy time for Terps, and it’s important to practice good hygiene to ensure a smooth start to classes. If you’ve been reading the news, it’s likely that you’ve seen mention of the H3N2 virus, which is the reason for the particularly bad flu season this year. It’s important to get flu shots annually because there are multiple strains of the virus, and they mutate every year. This means that a new vaccine must be developed every year in anticipation of the most common strains of the virus that season. The dominant strain this year, known as H3N2, is closely related to the virus responsible for the 2009 swine flu outbreak, H1N1. H3N2 has proven to be especially harsh because it’s typically dominant in the United Kingdom and Australia, so people in the US have less innate resistance to the virus. Many people have some misconceptions about the flu and vaccinations. One of the most common myths is that you can get the flu from the vaccine; the vaccine is actually made from an inactivated virus that can’t in-fect you. People also often believe that the flu is just a bad cold, or that it can be treated with antibiotics – these are both false! The flu is a viral infection, so antibiotics won’t have any effect. If you have the flu, make sure to rest up and drink plenty of fluids to help your body fight the infection. If you find yourself running a fever, the best option is to stay home and rest to prevent spreading the virus to others. Fortunately, University of Maryland’s Health Center provides flu vaccines free of charge with most health insurance plans, so make sure to stop by and get your shot next time you take a trip up to Stamp. Aside from getting your flu shot, make sure to abide by other routine hygienic practices as well – they make a big dif-ference! College campuses have ideal conditions for the flu virus to propagate, especially in crowded residence halls and diners. Coughing into your arm and consistent-ly washing your hands will help you and your fellow Terps prevent the spread of illness, so we can all focus on having a strong start to our spring courses.

In some cultures, the New Year celebrations come during the middle of the winter. In others, it is the start of the Spring season.

The Chinese New Year, also referred to as the Spring Festival, is the first day of the new moon of the Lunar Year. Celebrated by a multitude of other Asian countries such as Malaysia, Japan and Indonesia, the Chinese New Year has had a significant impact on mainland China’s culture and customs. Traditionally purposed to honor the deities in-grained in the Chinese culture, the celebration also includes the reverence paid to the ancestors of each celebrant. This year the marquee event comes on February 16, while last year it fell on January 28. The first new moon of the lunar cycle typically occurs from January 21 to February 20. Families usually gather together for a dinner reunion just like in America’s annual Thanksgiving celebration. It is also customary to clean the house very thoroughly before the big turn of the calendar to sweep away the bad fortune of the past and make way for the good luck of the future.

Feeling far away from home? Or do you just want to partake in this age-old Lunar New Year celebration? Well, lucky for you because there are quite a few options just an Uber ride away in Washington D.C. for you to enjoy. There are two great options here. Firstly, the Smithsonian American Art Museum offers a top-notch celebration on February 10 in the middle of Chinatown with key activities like an art scavenger hunt as well as panda crafts. This is a great opportunity to get involved with the community in expressing yourself through art and culture. The scavenger hunt includes some of the most classic artistic works about the Chinese New Year, and would be fun for all ages. Secondly, the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage offers a free performance of folk Chinese music on the actual new year day, February 16 at 6pm. The

state-of-the-art venue provides an interesting look back at the music of past generations, and obviously, a cool look into different cultures. Chengu’s Traditional Folk Music night includes bamboo instruments and world class flowing stringed instruments to captivate you as if you were in China celebrating the new year.

Wherever you are, take in another new year celebra-tion with friends and family!
