As a new sixth form in 2010 we knew our very first cohort of students were placing huge trust in us. They demonstrated their faith in us by joining us in twice the numbers we expected. And we are proud to announce they have just successfully completed their AS examinations and are on track to achieve excellent results in A Level and BTEC qualifications in 2012.

ag6 is a very special place

In 2011 we have been delighted to welcome more than 100 new students into the new year 12. Together we have developed a strong sense of community and a warm, caring and supportive ethos. We have high expectations and demanding academic standards, but we are an inclusive sixth form, which means no student will be declined a place due to low GCSE grades. We offer courses suitable for students of all abilities and background.

We do however require all students to sign up to the ag6 charter, which lists the very high expectations we have for attitude and behaviour, attendance and punctuality. We

insist that all assignments are completed on time and adherence to a dress code. The Charter was drawn up by our current students and forms the basis for our positive ethos. A full copy of the Charter isincluded in this prospectus.

At Alder Grange we strongly believe in Student Voice and as such are always eager to involve our students in decision-making. In the sixth form this is largely achieved through the ag6 Student Union, where students elect a President and other key officers who help to run social events, charity events, student discipline and support student welfare among others.

At ag6 we offer a wide range of both Applied courses and more traditional A Levels. Students can choose to study either A Level or Applied courses or a mixture of the two; making ag6 unique in the blend of options it is able to offer students. There are also a broad range of enrichment courses. Some, such as ‘Extended Project’ are compulsory, others are optional. Details of the options are listed within this prospectus. We regularly invite guest speakers into school and take students on visits both for educational and recreational purposes. Together these provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all.

Our brand new £8million building opened in February 2011. The state-of-the-art environment provides us with purpose designed teaching facilities, which include an industry standard cateringkitchen, health care consultation rooms, a fully operational nursery, science laboratories, media and performance studio, horticulture, laboratories, library, ICT resources, art room and many seminar and teaching rooms, as well as fantastic views of the Valley from the top level!

Above all else we want the ag6 experience to be of value in its own right. Whilst we work hard to prepare our students for the next step, whether that is further study at university or in the world of work, these two years will shape their future lives forever and as such are among the most important of their careers, and should not be thought of as a mere ‘stepping stone’ from school to University. ag6 isn’t just preparation for the next stage of your life; it is the nextstage of your life.

In September 2012 we have up to 150 places available. I hope the information in these pages helps you decide if ag6 is the right place for you. If it is we would love to see you at our open events and look forward to receiving your application.

If you have any questions at all about ag6 please do not hesitate to contact me.

The programme is based at ag6,with input from our partner Primaryand High schools along with sessionsdelivered by Edge Hill University. At the end of the programme there is the opportunity to spend a day at the Faculty of Education where you will receive an official Edge Hill certificate summarising your involvement and achievement.

In addition you will have a mock interview, tour of the Edge Hill Campus and Education Faculty plus advice on completing UCAS applications. There will also be the chance to gain general advice and guidance about the various routes into a career in teaching.

The interview is carried out by SeniorInitial Teacher Training lecturers who will offer students dedicated advice on how to prepare for their actual interview. As places at Edge Hill are increasingly competitive, taking part in ‘Tomorrow’s Teachers’gives students that extra advantage!

Each session begins with a Senior Lecturer from Edge Hill setting the scene for that unit e.g. how to design a lesson or how to create to right atmosphere so that there are high expectations of the students.

Students then carry-out some observation in these fields across the programme with opportunities for weekly attachments to either Primary or High schools. The units end with another session where, as a group, students can discuss and reflect on their experiences.

The students will spend time with current Edge Hill Trainee Teachers so they can experience what it is like to train as a teacher at Alder Grange. Basically, ‘Tomorrow’s Teachers’ is about children, how they learn and how we can support them to realise their potential!

We want to give ag6 students the chance to get some experience of these ‘basics’ which include:

> Learning and Teaching: The tools of the trade!> The structure of a good lesson plan.> Key skills for effective lesson observing.> Creating relationships that lead to outstanding Behaviour for Learning.> Behaviour for Learning and specific strategies for effective behaviour

The aim of this programme is to offer those of you who might be considering acareer in teaching (at Primary or Secondary) the opportunity to engage in realistic,hands-on observation and discussion of the various areas that make-up a teacher’s daily responsibilities.
