The letters Kaf-Chaf-Final Chaf
Kaf כ and Chaf כ make the K and Ch (like the
way we say the letter Chet or the word “Blech”) sounds. The way to tell the difference is: Kaf has a dot in the middle, while Chaf does not (Remember Bet versus Vet? Same thing).1
So, what’s with the Final Chaf ך? In Hebrew, some letters have 2 forms – one that you use in the beginning or middle of a word, and one that you use
ONLY at the END of a word. Why? That’s like
asking why we have upper case and lower case letters in English!
Hebrew words that begin with Kaf include:
1 There are no Hebrew words that start with Chaf but you will read the letter sometimes because of the way letters and vowels work together in Hebrew.

Kanarit
כנרית
K’valim2 כבלים
And how does that Final Chaf work? Here are a couple of examples – the words Lach לך (to you) and S’roch שרוך (shoelace) both end in Final Chaf.
2 K’valim also means cable TV, so the next time you’re in Israel, you can ask an Israeli student if they saw the new series bich’valim (on cable TV). And guess what? – You just saw Chaf כ in action, switching from a Kaf כ to a Chaf כ because of the letter’s position in a word.

The Hebrew word for “all” or “every” is Kol כל. So why is there an “ah” vowel under the letter Kaf?
Don’t worry about that for now. Instead, think about this famous Hebrew expression:
כל ישראל ערבים זה לזה
Kol Yisrael Aravim Zeh l’Zeh (Jews are responsible for each other).
