Another year has passed as we enter a new cycle of event planning and executions… And I must say what a thrill it has been! Welcoming an even busier season of events for the company is always exciting and with all the potential that we have been given, we could not have asked for anything better. Between all the latest corporate year ends, to planning conferences and the graduation of our first academy intake of 2009, we have been running around like lunatics!

With Aleit Events off to new adventures and new experiences, we would like to share just a little of what the New Year has in store for us – and for you!

As the New Year is already speeding away at full throttle, the introduction and adaption of the latest trends is mandatory as it allows us to create a sense of sustainability and keep our credibility and standards within our clientele. Forget about the vicious financial phase that was brought upon us these past few years; it’s time to build up what we have and keep our business on the go. The year of 2012 carries over a whole new mindset, as it opens many opportunities that allow us to gain a sense of cost-conscious and conservative coordination, by allocating appropriate budget measures to certain types of events and availability of resources. At this point in time, The Aleit Group, who has been running for a good ten years (I kid you not!), are very grateful for what we have and we have learnt to protect what we have created. We now redirect our focus on educating and sharing the knowledge that we have gained and carrying it over to our future leaders and the future generation of this industry, the Aleit Academy.

The saying “Put your money where your mouth is” has become a somewhat cheeky application as the cost-conscious economic climate has proven to push the industry to such a point that we have adjusted our workforce and creativity to suit the requirements of the clients - all the while surviving as a company. High delivery expectancy still remains, but that has not stopped us from being enthusiastic about what we do… Simply, we are seeing this year in an optimistic and realistic point of view.

To touch on an overall opinion of nationwide trends for 2012, South Africa has managed to gain an increase in international standards. This is reflected by the diverse variety of international based artists and performers who are taking a particular interest in our culture and country. It is safe to say that the FIFA World Cup has heard its final whispers amongst the streets of the big cities at the end of 2011. However it has left us with the infrastructures and products built to improve the South African economy. The benefit of these implementations are continuously aiding us today and allows people like us, project managers, to use them to our advantage for entertainment purposes.

With this I’d like to end off by saying that we are capable of converting just about anything into something that is “hot and happening”, if only we put our minds and hearts to it. We are trend setters, not just followers!

THE OPENING OUR LATEST EVENTSThe Aleit Group overview of the events of 2011: what we have accomplished... And keeping an eye on the future.Fifth Edition – April 2012

Kind Regards,

Hans Roosenschoon- Managing Director

The theme for these affairs was “Nautical Elegance”, in which we had the chance to once again amaze our clients with astonishing décor features and lighting aspects. Not to mention, the entertainment was a definite highlight, as the guests danced the night away to the beats of some of the best DJ’s in the country. The menu was a tantalizing combination of foods, prepared by chefs Piet and Gustaaf with their team of handy workers, and presented as interactive food stations. The gourmet dishes were composed from fresh produce infused with taste sensations served on clear Perspex trays and dry ice.

These corporate events pushed the limits and explored new boundaries within the event industry. We, as an inspiring event team and company will not stop just yet… The Aleit Events team plans to aim even higher for this year and continually exceed the expectations of our discerning clients!

As any year ends, it is custom to host one big bash to end off a hard working year and celebrate a business’ achievements and successes! As companies began to close and enjoy the festive season, it was time for our events team to put on their thinking caps and get busy planning the corporate Year End Parties. Presented with the mammoth challenge of seven corporate celebrations, held all over South Africa within two months, Hans, Thabo, Rozanne, Andelé, Cheri and Mondisa had no time to waste. It was so busy that even the rest of the wedding team got involved in the planning! With major procedures in place, each function had a unique element that made it different to the rest. Apart from the locations, these cocktail parties represented sophistication and trendy creativeness, encouraging guests to mingle and relax.

The respective locations, Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Bloemfontein, had the most spectacular views over beautiful landscapes, including our very own, majestic Table Mountain.

The locations for these corporate events were all about the focus on its surrounding views and the architectural natural infrastructure. For days on end, the coordinators searched high and low for the most capturing yet unseen vistas throughout the chosen destinations. The views that were carefully selected were breath taking, not only in the golden city of Johannesburg, colourful Durban and scenic Cape Town, but also in the undiscovered outskirts of Bloemfontein.

The Gardens Tech Rugby Club is locat-ed at the base of Table Mountain. The field is a large expanse filled with po-tential as the majestic Table Mountain forms a backdrop, while the view of the city and the Cape Town harbour lights lie in front of you. A clear span marquee with white flooring was set-up on the field allowing a full panoramic view of the surroundings. Guests were able to admire the city’s transformation as the day fell to night.

This corporate event was held at one of the top restaurants in Cape Town with spectacular views to match. Situ-ated on the other side of Signal Hill, with the Atlantic Ocean before you, the two open gardens of the restaurant were converted into complete event spaces covered with Bedouin tents so as not to obstruct the sweeping view of Camps Bay and Clifton’s beaches, instead creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The Hope School for Physically Disa-bled Children is situated next door to the Westcliff Hotel. Built in the early 1900’s, it is a beautiful historic building designed by Sir Herbert Baker, which was donated to the city as a Conva-lescent Home by one of the city’s first Randlords, Raymond Schumacher. The panoramic views from the sports field over the city of Johannesburg were nothing short of amazing as the sun began to set. Engulfed in a warm sunset over the City of Gold’s horizon, guests were treated to the mesmer-izing sight of the city’s lights. A clear span marquee was set-up as close to the perimeter of the field as possible to take advantage of the view of the city.

Our biggest corporate event this year was held inside the Coca Cola Dome for 1500 guests. Usually accommo-dating concerts for the likes of Sting, Roxette and Lil Wayne, with a number of thousands of screaming fans, the Coca Cola dome was humbly booked out for one of our corporate events. The massive circular structure was converted into an alluring party with a modern nautical vision.

The luxurious Fairmont Zimbali Lodge overlooks the incredible Indian Ocean and is surrounded by lush vegetation and beautiful indigenous gardens. Situated in a protected nature reserve, this five star boutique hotel is deco-rated to complement the natural sur-rounding forest with the classical ar-chitecture accentuated by warm wood and russet autumn tones. An un-spoiled shoreline, rolling hills and lush flora have come to define the Zimbali Coastal Resort region. No less than fourteen tents were stretched over the vast pool areas to create a festive at-mosphere and a floating platform was built over the sparkling pool as a stage for the entertainment for the evening.

Bloemfontein’s corporate event was held at the amazing Emoya Private Game Reserve. This 270 hectare Game and Nature Reserve is located in the pristine natural setting on the outskirts of Bloemfontein which hosts 33 species of wildlife such as giraffe, springbuck, sable and gemsbuck. This very low key lunch for 25 VIP guests was held on the Deck of Emoya Estate and Spa, overlooking the pond where the two local rhinoceros, Shaka and Shakira, enjoy a drink of water every day. Guests arrived to the unlikely combination yet impressive sight of rhinos and champagne.

The theme being a vision of glamorous nautical elegance, all things ‘ocean’ were embraced as the key inspiration for décor, as well as the interactive stations. Guests were lead up to the clear span marquee where white umbrellas were suspended upside down from the ceiling with fairy lights hanging down, creating an enchanting nautical wonder world. In order to capture the creative theme, a crisp colour palette was chosen, ranging from whites and navy with touches of bright red to add a twist. Couches were upholstered in brilliant blues and whites, fun pillows were designed and natural wood décor with thick rope gave this theme the edge, without it being overbearing. Flowers were kept simple in composition, but were striking in their minimalist form. Dark blue Delphiniums bordered on ultra violet while fresh Chinks scented the air and red anthuriums gave that pop of colour. Organic shapes with touches of chrome completed the overall look and feel – and not to forget, the social vibe of the crowd kept the party going to the late hours of the evening!

A party is not a party without music that keeps the beats driving! We had the privilege of working with DJ’s that are recognised all over South Africa within the world of musical entertainment. Starting the party off with light beats from DJ Preston, followed by music makers such as Zintle, DJ Dean Fuel, DJ Kent and Loyd, and the fabulous Poppy from 5fm, it was guaranteed to create a unique mix of sounds and laser lights as it evolved into a pumping electrifying vibe!

After taking all the beautiful shots of all of our Year End Events, we thought it would only be fitting to give you a formal introduction to ZaraZoo Photography... Over the last few years ZaraZoo Photography has established itself as one of the leading event and wedding photography outfits in South Africa. Not only do they produce images of outstanding quality, but they’re also highly regarded when it comes to after sales service and professionalism. Stefan Steenkamp started ZaraZoo in London and relocated to South Africa in 2006. A Stellenbosch University graduate in Financial accounting, Stefan started his working career in London. After 4 years in banking he left the financial world to pursue his natural talent in production and photography - he has not looked back since. “A passion for creating interesting images and a good understanding of light and framing – that’s all you need. But don’t think you can just pick up a camera and call

yourself a professional! No, it takes years of learning, educating yourself and making mistakes to hone your skills” says Stefan, a self taught photographer.

Over the past 6 years, Stefan has racked up no fewer than 12 ProFoto awards and his work has been published and featured in numerous local and international magazines. Photography has taken him all over the world – working in exotic places like Greece, Spain, Thailand and the USA to name a few. With the help of the Aleit Group, Stefan has covered high profile corporate events in Switzerland, France and this year Germany. A well travelled photographer to say the least! Definition of swag: the measure of how something carries itself, a sense of style and overall demeanour.

The event industry is constantly reinventing itself as new trends and technology hit the runway. Styles change and the needs evolve, therefore it is vital to keep up-to-date with these fluid, fast moving styles so that our company is constantly innovative and relevant. A measure of how we have implemented these trends gives us the growth spurt The Aleit Group needs to reach another ultimate high, as we adjust our workforce and team to what’s new, hot and happening!

Trends don’t happen in isolation, they tend to intersect and work in tandem with each other. Many are extensions or outgrowths of trends we formerly spotted. After all, trends with real significance can’t be assigned to just one calendar year. Technology is advancing at such a fast pace, that the inventors have come up with ways of creating a broader range of interactive tools for event planners to utilize at their events. Let’s see what we can make use of for our next event…

EVENT TRENDS 2012INTRODUCTION: “SPEAKING OF SWAG...”

Page 35: Aleit Event Projects_Fifth Edition
Page 36: Aleit Event Projects_Fifth Edition

Interaction is the key word for this year. Companies are encouraging using highly ranked and influential guest speakers, who choose to entertain guests in a more intellectual way. With this the crowds find creative topics to network over during corporate events. Although guest speak-ers certainly have their place in modern events, there is a movement creating a platform for open discussion, rather than everyone simply listening to one person and his or her perspective. Guests at-tending will play an integral part in deci-sion making, adding a lot of value to the event, for them as individuals as well as their companies. For 2012 events need to stand out to existing clients, help attract new ones and re-acquaint staff with con-tacts they don’t see regularly.

WE COME TOGETHER, NO MATTER THE WEATHERAMUSING ATTRACTIONS

MARKETING YOUR EVENTSOCIAL ADS

If you have a budget for advertising – so-cial advertising is the way to go. They are great for getting your event to the general local prospective attendees and for get-ting parties interested in your business and concept. A popular marketing device, the ‘green screen’, has allowed compa-nies to become even more creative with social ads and attracting people to use their product.

Page 37: Aleit Event Projects_Fifth Edition
Page 38: Aleit Event Projects_Fifth Edition

GETTING SMARTER WITH SMART PHONES

Taking advantage of the increasing benefits from technology, corporate companies can create Smart-phone applications that can be widely used at con-ferences as information portals, covering programs, running competitions and more. Their use can be extended to the access of social media, in particular Twitter and personalised websites as well as blogs.

MOBILE HUBS

The explosion of wireless and mobile technology will continue to influence conferences and events in many ways. Event organizers can create technol-ogy centres within their event that give guests the ability to blog ‘live’ from the conference or simply network with delegates. The fact that these hubs are mobile enables you to easily transport, move and implement them just about anywhere!

SOCIAL MEDIA SPLURGE

Social Media will play an even bigger role this year in business communication, more tweeting from conferences, including twitter feeds displayed dur-ing speeches, presentations and more blogging from companies and delegates. Events are the per-fect platform for the innovators using social media sites for marketing purposes – before, during and post event. This also serves as a feedback station where these feeds can be taken up as creative criti-cism and bettered for the next event.

Specialising in an intense three year combination course in event management, the Aleit Academy is running on its successful fourth year of academic excellence – and it will not simply stop there! With many ideas, plans and course structures that will soon be in place, the academy is the one constant facility that will evolve, mature and develop to become the leader in the industry - its own source of education to the world of events.

THE ALEIT ACADEMY UPDATEThe Aleit Academy – the ultimate combination of tasteful educational event experience!

Page 41: Aleit Event Projects_Fifth Edition

A very inspiring comment that Hans made during his interview, was when he expressed how The Aleit Group considers the academy to be its legacy, its source of keeping the purpose of the company ‘alive’. “We will not always be fashionable, we will not always be funky, we will not at some stage be young enough to run this entire company… education allows us to share

our expertise with other people, allowing us to create our own idea of ‘living forever’. “With those words in place, each student is motivated to make the best out of their current position within the Aleit family. We are ever so proud to present to our dear readers, what the students, as a unique (and overpowering) group have been up to in the last few months…

Page 42: Aleit Event Projects_Fifth Edition
Page 43: Aleit Event Projects_Fifth Edition

It has already been four months since the latest academy intake have joined the family! With the addition of another 26 students to the group, we stand at an amazing 57 innovative and talented individuals ready to take on the event industry.

With the first few days of registration and introductions at the stunning Institute of Culinary Arts in Banhoek Valley and the very sophisticated Aleit Academy campus in Bosman’s Crossing Stellenbosch, the students got a chance to see what we have in store for them in the year to come. All the necessary resources such as text books and catering equipment was handed over to them with great expectancy and pride, we know that they are in the best hands that will teach these ‘freshmen’ how to become the best possible event managers – we wish them a clear and focused path ahead and hope they make us proud!

THE ALEIT ACADEMY UPDATEFreshmen: Welcoming The 1st Years

Page 44: Aleit Event Projects_Fifth Edition

The Aleit Academy has not just progressed into one of the top event educational training facilities in the Western Cape, but has also given our students the opportunity to extend their creative boundaries and intern in external companies outside that of the Aleit Group. Cheri and Bianca, the Academy Executives, have made this possible by individually assessing each student, finding their sweet spot, whilst approaching and sealing the deal with other big companies. At this point, nothing can stop us – there has been talk of even considering overseas internships!

ALEIT ACADEMY UPDATE // 45

Page 46: Aleit Event Projects_Fifth Edition

leandri@godwanagamereserve: Living amongst wild animals for two months was such an awesome experience. The 5 star game reserve taught me a lot about nature and made me realize what my vision in life is.

leandre@gardenroutegamelodge: My placement entitled me working in all of the de-partments within the business. When I was there I also had the privilege to help coor-dinate and manage two stunning weddings on the estate.

kirsty@events 24: Working at Events 24 introduced me to a whole new side of events. Arranging outdoor festivals and awards ceremonies that would be broadcast on live TV as well as events for YOU, Huisgenoot and Drum Magazine. My most exciting ex-perience was arranging their Christmas in July party. It was a huge success with live ice carving and Dozi entertaining us with a live performance.

fanie@flowersinthefoyer: Working in the floral shop put me in touch with my inner creativity again. Here I learned about the finer nuances of floral décor, and how to not only look at and understand flowers, but to feel them too. I enjoyed my stay with them so much, that I decided to extend my 2 month placement to 5 months. Beauty and creativity drove everything that I did in this time - any coordinator’s dream!

elske@secretdiary: Interning at the largest stationery company in the country, Secret Diary, persuaded my creative genes to pursue my passion for beautiful things and my desire to make something ordinary into something extraordinary! Secret Dairy’s designs are for those who truly desire to set themselves apart by making the perfect stylish statement.

bruce@aleitevents: Being part of the Aleit Events team was an amazing time; I was able to be a part of the year end functions, consisting of 1500 people at the Coca Cola Dome in Johannesburg. It taught me a lot when it comes to dealing with a large num-ber of people and how important team work is.

cassandra@thirstbarservices: Ending my internships off with a massive bang as I stood amongst talented mixologists and flairing bartenders who knew how to quench just about anyone’s thirst! It was completely mind opening to see what a major differ-ence a quality bar service can do to an event– I am truly blessed to have worked with such a hardworking, creative and innovative team. #bepremium

PLACEMENTS 2011/2012The tweet on the street

Page 47: Aleit Event Projects_Fifth Edition

mala@tintswaloatlantic: Working as venue manager, I was also responsible for the flowers and inside look of the lodge as well as working with the visitors. The lodge was open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and has amazing accommodation available. Loved working with the tourists and meeting people from all over the world.

lizandra@theexpressoshow: Becoming part of the Expresso and Hallo Doctor family was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Working with so many different companies and industries everyday was especially knowledgable, not to mention all the celebrities and personalities that I had the privileges to also get to know and work with. Such a remarkable journey and will definitely stay in my unforgettalbe books!

lindi@klukcgdt: I loved my time working with the best fashion designers in South Af-rica, it was an exceptional experience! The best part was definitely the NY fashion week and of course all the clothes.

marinda@misioverturf: I joined Misi Overturf, a stylist for Tuis and Home magazine, where I observed and studied the behind the scenes of what goes into those beautiful pictures we see in the magazines. Hard work always gets rewarded and mine was ac-creditation in the March issue of Tuis and Home magazine and the April issue of Leéf magazine.

liebre@floralaffairs: This is a Florist situated in a little town called Riebeek-Kasteel. This was an experience of a life time. I got to do flower arrangements and did décor at events. Jo-Lize gave me free reigns and I could do events as I thought best, which was awesome and I got to do two weddings by myself.

meagan@bigconcerts: : I was extremely lucky to work for Big Concerts at the time when Coldplay and Kings of Leon made an appearance in South Africa. I loved work-ing there, the whole company is amazing; the work is great and learning what techni-cal details it involves bringing an international star to South Africa was such a privilege.

letitia@moondrops: If ever there was something I didn’t know about flowers or floral arrangements I learnt it at Moondrops. A welcoming, humble flower warehouse in Bell-ville. I was part of the staff and management – they made me feel at home and in all my life I have never met a group of people so dedicated to and passionate about their work.

mpho@flowersinthefoyer: The smell of fresh flowers, the bright pastel colours... Yes, I could do this all over again! I was fascinated by the floral industry and what it entitles to the event word. The small change one blossom can do is exciting, it keeps you on your creative feet and makes you want to go out there and get more! A flower a day, keeps the doctor away.

Farewells are a sincere way of saying be off and spread your wings! Our very first academy intakes of 2009 have come a long way: from their first steps into the lecture room, to coordinating their own events, to now, graduating and being able to say “we’ve made it!”

The graduation ceremony took place on Tuesday, the 20th of March at 401 Rozendal in Stellenbosch. The evening was kept simple and sophisticated; bubbly and canapés on arrival; mix and mingle along the way, but what really captured the hearts of our newly graduated students, were the words of wisdom given during the award ceremony. With both ICA and the Aleit Academy graduates celebrating their graduation together, it was an emotional walk down memory lane guided by Aleit, who was heartbroken not to be present that night. To make up for lost moments, Aleit recorded a special documentary, in which he dedicated a heartfelt and motivational speech to each of his students. Using locations and décor items to aim his expression for all five Aleit graduates, it was the end of a beautiful experience and the beginning of a new chapter. Inecke, Joanie, Johan, Lana and Leana have all found a permanent place within the event industry and in our hearts; may their future blossom with success and new adventures!

Inecke Photography was founded and is run by Inecke de Kock, a vivacious young innovative woman whose passion is to create photographs of unique and distinct composition, as well as focus on astonishing quality and the needs and wants of her clients. With a diploma in Event Management and culinary excellence with the Aleit Academy and Institute of Culinary Arts, Inecke has learned how to identify the beautiful aspects within each décor set. Along with her ability to create a comfortable atmosphere with every shoot, this willowy beauty of a person is both personable and has a wonderful way of working with people. Her knowledge of the back end of the planning process enables Inecke to assist in photo shoots with bridal couples, corporate clients and portrait personal photos. Inecke Photography has grown leaps and bounds since adding weddings and corporate events to her portfolio of work in South Africa.

We are proud of what she has achieved and are most definitely keeping an eye on her services! We had a chance to squeeze in a quick interview with Inecke, before she was off to another photo shoot:

AE: Freshly graduated and ready to take on the world! Inecke, how would you describe your past experience at the Aleit Academy?

“After working and studying with the Aleit Group, I can honestly talk about ten years of experience I have gained in the three years of being part of this astonishing Academy and Group. The course teaches you not only all that you need to know about the events and wedding industry, but also places you outside your comfort zone at times, helping you to utilize your abilities to be the best, with not only the things you are naturally good at, but with everything you do.

Being exposed to a wide variety of subjects and practical experiences, you find out where you are strong and hone skills that will last you a lifetime! You also learn how to put these skills in practice to be the best individual you can be in any situation you could find yourself in. Being part of this dynamic group, made me realise one thing - You can put your mind to anything, should you ever falter, there will be a whole Aleit Group behind you every step of the way.”

AE: What is your vision for “Inecke Photography”?

“We do our utmost to provide a photographic service with a desire to being different and innovative in everything we do. We endeavour to capture a person’s true and natural beauty as I believe that each person is beautiful in their own way. Obsession and reverence are the words of the year for me and I pour it visibly into each and every shoot.

Seeing each event or wedding shoot in its own uniqueness to other events and weddings are of vital importance. We strive to capture the whole event or wedding to the best of our abilities by applying a process of planning regarding the capture of each individual event beforehand, including a site inspection of the venue where the shoot will be taking place to ensure that we are equipped for all lighting aspects at the venue.

My vision is to become known in the industry for excellent service, being a woman of my word and continuing to be unique in the photographs we produce. We will accomplish this by building fantastic relationships along the way and continuing to be at the top of our game. I would love to tell you about all our other ventures but keeping it a surprise seems like way more fun, therefore to see how we operate please follow”

ALEIT ACADEMY UPDATE // 51

Page 52: Aleit Event Projects_Fifth Edition

“First and foremost 2012 was off to a good start with an average of between Cape Town and Johannesburg offices two events per week, which is contrary to what the past couple of years have been. How-ever the event industry is feeling the financial pinch with most corpo-rates having cut down budgets on average by 35% to 40%. As Hans has already elaborated the cost conscious development within the event industry, let me tell you more about other important factors for 2012.

Business dynamics evolves as such that one needs to keep up with and remain relevant to clients and potential clients. Gone are the days where a business was just a brand name. It is now imperative to identify a business or brand with associated face/s. Clients also now seek an in person relationship as opposed to e-mail or telecom encounters. The more in-person attention you give to clients the more they will entrust you with their business. Face/s of a brand need to reflect just what the brand stands for and I’d like to believe that faces of The Aleit brand do just that with distinction.”

Great words to end off our Newsletter from ‘Mr Appearance’, as we would like to call him; we are so excited to see what the following months have in store for us – watch this space!
