PRINCIPAL’S REPORT continued

Playing Safely in the School Grounds

Student safety is always a priority at our school so I would like to remind all parents that the riding of scooters or bicycles is not permitted in the school grounds. The age of the child riding the scooter is not the main issue, it is the potential of hitting another child that matters. Unfortunately just a little distraction could cause an injury to someone else. Please, if you are waiting for your children with toddlers, keep them under your closest attention so that we do not have a mishap that can cause distress to others. Please, no riding in the school grounds!

Lesson planning and preparation for better student learning

As mentioned last week, for the past 12 months the staff have been working with the University of Melbourne Graduate School of Education to embed a consistent way of planning lesson sequences and then establishing the best way to help children learn. This excellent work by staff was recognised in our recent review and is evident in all classes in the school. Each sequence of lessons has a clear learning intention, with success criteria that clearly outline the intended outcomes and how the teacher and students will know if the outcomes have been successfully attained. Children will regularly be given feedback about where they are at and what they will need to do so that they can progress and achieve deeper learning.

Today as part of our student-free day, the staff spent the day continuing their professional development. In the morning the whole staff continued to learn about the best ways to give students constructive feedback about their learning. In the following session, staff shared and learned from each other about the progress that they have made implementing SOLO Taxonomy, which is the method of planning and delivering lesson sequences that result in deep learning for children. This model is consistent with the implementation of the High Impact Teaching Strategies published by the Education Department. In the afternoon teams had the opportunity to plan and prepare resources that will assist in the delivery of well-structured lessons for children.

See you at the concert on Monday!!!

George Perini Principal

ArtSEL Nikki Olsen

This week in ArtSEL we have learnt about getting to know others even if they are different from us.

We are all different, and getting to know others who are different from us and accepting and appreciating their differences is showing empathy. Even though we may be different to others, we can still get to know others and make new friends. One way to make new friends is starting a conversation - talking to each other in a respectful way. When you make conversation with someone, it is good to show that person that you are interested in getting to know them -what they think or feel. When we start a conversation, we need to find a topic that you think the person might be interested in. Then really listen to what they are saying and ask questions to keep the conversation going. Another way is by giving a complement – that’s when you say something nice to someone. We can also invite others to join in on a game we are playing.

This week, try to start a conversation with someone you don’t know that well, and ask them to join in on your game.

If you have any questions, please come and see me.

Donations can also be made online at DROUGHT ‘Hampers and Hay for Hope’ by SchoolAid Trust - click here

About this fundraiser:

With farmers suffering through what many are calling the “worst drought in living memory”, SchoolAid Trust’s ‘Hampers and Hay for Hope’ campaign is an important vehicle that provides a powerful way for our young peo-ple to respond as a collective to the plight of those on the land. In doing this, our students will feel empowered as they respond and feel they can make a difference.

Funds raised will be directed to the purchase of the most needed items and include stock feed and/or hampers filled with non-perishable food supplies, treats, pet food, personal care items, and any messages that we receive from schools to enclose.

All monies raised from the raffle, dress up day, and other donations will be directed towards the Hampers and Hay for Hope fundraiser.

Thank you in anticipation of your generous support for this worthy cause.

On Friday 24th August all Year 3 students went to CERES to learn more about our topic of Aboriginal people, the first humans in Australia. First we went to a spot were we could have a

break, meet up with the other Year 3 students and eat our lunch and snack. We met the teachers who taught us about Aboriginal stories. She also let us perform a play and the story was 'Tiddalick the Frog'. Our second lesson was making things out of natural resources that were in the environment such as grass, reeds, leaves and sticks. Thirdly we went for a walk along by the Merri Creek to hear about the Aboriginal fishing traps. We examined a coolamon and a

boomerang. Our final lesson was walking around the gardens to collect Pig Face leaves and Kangaroo Apple. The Aboriginal people used these foods for eating and drinking and only took what they needed from their natural world! Smart!

Everybody had a great time at such a beautiful place on a wonderfully sunny day. We learnt so much about Australia's First People.

Year 4 Taskworks Excursion & Sleepover

The 27th August was an exciting day for all of the Grade 4’s. Why? Because it was the day of the Grade 4 sleepover. We arrived in the late afternoon at 2.45pm at Taskworks! We had a line up of many fun activities over the two days. These included: Stomp-a-Stump, the Cable Maze, Sticks, Build It, Create a Scene, the Puzzle room and Peg Fast. All of these activities were great, but the two favourites were Stomp-a-Stump and Cable Maze. The food was amazing too! Overall this experience was amazing and we would recommend it to anyone.

Nandita and Camryn (4R)

The games at Taskworks were awesome and really fun! The food was scrumptious. Taskworks hospitality was great! The games made us really think

hard because there’s always a task during games! Matthew, Eezen and Jacob (4CB)

City of Monash Junior Advisory Group

Thank you to Claire Sideras, the Child & Young People Friendly City Project Manager from the City of Monash, for coming to talk to the Year 4’s about the Junior Advisory Group (JAG).

The City of Monash has developed JAG to provide a platform for primary school aged children to express their opinions and contribute to discussions about their communities. Four schools within the City of Monash were selected to participate, with each school providing two student representatives. These representatives will meet with Monash Councillors throughout the remainder of 2018 and 2019 to discuss issues relevant to primary school aged children.

Congratulations to Michael and Jayda in Year 4 for being chosen to represent our school. We look forward to hearing about your experiences.

The Link Health & Community Keeping Kids Smiling program was at EHPS this week providing free dental check-ups to students. The Keeping Kids Smiling program aims to identify children in need of dental care and helps teach children how to look after their teeth at home with a toothbrushing lesson. Children were sent home with a show bag, and parents received a letter informing them of the results of the dental check-up.

Music: Count Us In Coordinator: Tanya Dolence

If you haven’t heard yet, this year’s Music Count Us In song has been released. The students have been listening to it, and Years 5 and 6 have created some great actions. The song is called One Song, composed by five school students (no Essex Heights students this year), in collaboration with John Foreman OAM (Program Ambassador) and Justine Clarke (2018 Program Mentor). The performance date for this year falls on Thursday 1st November (the day before Showcase), and will take place in the Hall.

If you don’t know about this event, here is a little info …

The idea came about as a way of promoting music in schools; each year, one song is written and thousands of schools across Australia sing the same song on the same day at the same time as a way of joining students, teachers, parents and friends nationwide to celebrate the importance of music and community.

If you would like to listen to the 2018 song at home, click the ’One Song’ image, or you can also find it by searching for “MCUI One Song” in your web browser.

Happy singing!

Regards, Tanya Dolence

‘Strike it Out’ is another great game that can be found on nRich.maths.org - click here - for improving number sense. To begin, draw a number line from 1 to 20. The first player picks two numbers, crosses them out and circles either their sum or their difference. The second player crosses out the circled number and another number that is still left, and again circle the sum or the difference. This continues until someone is unable to move. The winner is the person who stops their opponent from being able to move! This game provides opportunities for students to recall addition and subtraction facts, while encouraging those who are already fluent to conjecture and convince.
