The Brandenburg Gate, built at the end of the 18th century as a watchtower and toll gate, is today one of the most important sights in Berlin and is a well-known symbol of Germany‘s former division. Located at the start of the Unter den Linden promenade, it offers anyone visiting Berlin the perfect backdrop for a photo.

The Reichstag building in Berlin is the seat of the German Bundestag (national parliament) and is also a popular tourist attraction. Groups and individuals can take advantage of guided tours, a visit to the glass dome which crowns the building or watch a parliament debate. Due to reasons of security, advanced registration is necessary.

The Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart is home to the National Galleryof the National Museums and the venue for contemporary art in Berlin. Here, works by the likes of Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein are on permanent display. There are also temporary exhibi-tions.

The Pergamon Museum is another of Berlin’s National Museums. It is the home of ancient architecture, German post-post-antiquity art and Middle Eastern and Islamic art. The museum derives it‘s name from the monumental construction of the Pergamon Altar, but it is not the museum‘s only illustrious component the impressive Ishtar Gate, the Mshatta façade and the Market Gate of Miletus are also globally celebrated artifacts.

The Neues Museum is one of the five National Museums in Berlin on Berlin‘s so-called Museumsinsel (“Museum Island”). In 2009, it was completely restored and now exhibits many treasures from the Egyptian, classical, ancient and prehistoric periods. Here at the Neues Museum, one can see the bust of Nefertiti, the famous Berlin “Green Head” and the “Gold Hat”, as well as Schliemann‘s Trojan antiquities.

With its little boutiques, designer shops and hip flagship stores, the area around Hackescher Markt is an absolute paradise for shopaholics. Many Berliner designers have set up shop here and it‘s not unusual to see well-known celebrities sipping on cappuccinos in one of the many cafés.

The Deutsches Historisches Museum paints a fascinating picture of German history in an international context. The permanent exhibition is located in the old Zeughaus with a surface area of over 8,000m2. The four floors of the I. M. Pei Exhibition Hall are devoted to the museum’s temporary shows.

The DDR Museum (a museum on the former East Germany) is another narrative piece of Berlin history. Everyday life in pre-unified East Germany is vividly depicted here simulated journeys in a “Trabi” (a typical East German car) through a housing estate, and East German television in living rooms decorated in the style of the era are simultaneously fun and educational.

The field of 2711 concrete blocks of various heights, approximately 19,000m2

in size, is situated between Potsdamer Platz and the Brandenburg Gate. It was built to commemorate the murdered Jews in Europe. The information point, where you can get a glimpse of the Nazis‘ contempt for mankind and destructive mania, is located underneath the memorial.

This hit show from the US can be seen at the Stage Theater at Potsdamer Platz, and both amazes and astounds visitors of all ages. Experience its unique mix of a rousing concert atmosphere, first-class comedy and incredible effects. The Blue Man Group is a show that you‘ll never forget!

Checkpoint Charlie is one of the most famous former border crossings from the time of Berlin‘s division between East and West. Here, Soviet and American tanks confronted each other in a psychological test of strength each other shortly after the wall was built in 1961. Today, with its museum anf a recently installed wall panorama by the artist Yadegar Assisi, it is a site for information and commemoration.

The STORY OF BERLIN museum on Kur-fürstendamm offers visitors a fascinating crash course in 800 years of Berlin‘s rich history. You can also take a guided tour through.

In the impressive museum building designed by acclaimed architect Daniel Libeskind, the permanent exhibition invites you on a journey through two millennia of German-Jewish history. Artistic and everyday objects, photo- graphs and letters, interactive ele-ments and media stations show you the history of Jewish culture in Germany and illustrate how closely Jewish life is inter-woven with German history.

The Tierpark Berlin is an area of appro-ximately 160 hectares, with a beautiful collection of more than 7,300 animals in 861 different shapes and sizes. It is one of the largest, and certainly the most beauti-fully landscaped zoo in Europe. It is open 365 days a year and annually attracts over 1 million visitors.

Until 1989, adversaries of the GDR regime were held here at the Gedenk- stätte Berlin-Hohenschönhausen and interrogated by the State Securi-ty, the secret police. Today, it is a place of information and remem-brance: guided tours led by former prisoners there offer a memorable and most impressive insight into its history.

KURFÜRSTENDAMM ALEXANDERPLATZ

FRIEDRICHSTRASSEWILMERSDORFER STRASSE

Kurfürstendamm 10719 Berlin

Alexanderplatz10178 Berlin

Wilmersdorfer Straße10627 Berlin

As in former times, the Ku‘damm is one of Berlin‘s city‘s main shopping streets and traffic arteries. In conjunction with Tauentzienstrasse, it is the 3.5km long tourist and business centre of City West and home to KaDeWe, the Memorial Church, Zoo station and countless tourist attractions.

Alexanderplatz is one of the most important hubs of life in Berlin. With its various exhibits, fairs and festival, the central square is an important tourist attraction. Countless department stores and boutiques are located at the square. Additionally, many of the most famous landmarks in the city are found here, such as the World Clock, the Red City Hall (Rotes Rathaus) and the TV tower.

Through the renovation of countless business buildings the 3.3km long north-south axis between Oranienburger Tor and Mehringplatz experienced a considerable rejuvenation after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Particularly noteworthy are the high-end boutiques and department storesm, such as Galeries Lafayette and Kulturkaufhaus Dussmann. Beyond these, there are also the tourist attractions like Checkpoint Charlie, the intersection of Prachtstrasse and Unter den Linden, and the theater and concert buildings, Friedrichstadt Palace and the Admiral Palace.

“Wilma” was opened in 1978 as the first pedestrian zone in the capital and is still today one of the most frequented shopping streets in Berlin. Furthermore, the oldest department store building in the city finds its home on the corner of Pestalozziestraße and currently houses the retail giant, Karstadt. More than 120 shops in the modern Wilmersdorfer Arcaden have been complementing the enormous range of goods which the shopping street has to offer since 2007.

CURRY 36

KARAOKE AT MAUERPARK

ART AND JUNK MARKET AT STRASSE DES 17.JUNI

MUSTAFA‘S GEMÜSEKEBAP

ASIAN MARKET (DONG XUAN CENTER)

No visit to Berlin is complete without making a small detour to Curry 36, a food stall for Berlin’s typical “Currywurst”. There are two locations where you can treat yourself to the best Currywurst in town: on Mehringdamm or at Zoo train station. Members of the famous rock band “die Ärzte” as well as former Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder have also been spotted snacking here, so be prepared for a long wait in the queue.

The open-air karaoke show which takes place on Sundays in Berlin’s Mauerpark is already fa-mous far and wide beyond the city limits. When the weather is good, more than 1,000 karaoke fans meet up every week at 2pm to give their large audience an outstanding show of talent.

The arts and flea market on Straße des 17. Juni is open at weekends for rummagers and discoverers. With its partly professional sales stands, the flea market isn’t the city’s cheapest but is one of the largest and most charming flea markets around. To get there, you can either travel one stop from Zoo station with the urban railway or take a stroll through Tiergarten.

You can find Mustafa’s food stall for vegetable doner kebabs also on Mehringdamm and it’s just as busy as Curry 36. If you’ve never tried a kebab before, then this is the perfect place to give it a try. The grilled vegetables, plenty of experience and true devotion to delicious food make Mustafa’s kebabs stand out from the rest. Be prepared to wait!

Visit the huge Dong Xhuan Center in Berlin’s Lichtenberg district for oriental delicacies spread over 118,000 m2 of floor space. The offer includes aromatic fruit and vegetables from Asia, as well as fabrics from India and flashy plastic goods from China. Visit, take a look and be amazed at what you can discover here in this other world in the heart of Berlin!

MAYBACHUFER MARKET

You can find the popular “Turkish market” along the banks of the Maybachufer in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district every Tuesday and Friday between 11am and 6pm. The offer ranges from fresh fruit and vegeta-bles to baked goods, from fish to meat, dairy products to fabrics, jewellery to you-name-it from all around the world. If you want to listen to market criers doing their business in Berlin, then you’ll be exactly at the right place here.
