Editorial PP Quah Sek Cheng President’s Message Leong Choy Ying

Community Service in Rotary is often proclaimed as the “Heartbeat of Rotary”. Therefore, I wish to focus the first month of my Rotary year on Community Service.

Daily, we are inundated with news and media report of people in trouble or have urgent needs,

financial or otherwise. How does a Rotary club like ours with sixty odd members be able TO

MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Where do we start? Well, we will never be able to help everyone in the community but at least we should do what

we can within our reach and capability to make a difference to all those who need help in someway.

Lest our action would look hollow, we should be conscious that those who are in need may not be just strangers. They could very well include members from within our Club, our immediate community. It is only natural that we should not forget those Rotarians who need our help and concern.

It may be just a simple act of visiting our members and their families in times of ill-health, or grief in the passing of their loved ones.

Patience and quiet consideration will always be comforting in times of trouble. Taking care of our immediate “Community” will definitely generate rippling effects that will overflow to the community at large.

Let the Heartbeat starts from within. Let us not get tired or disheartened with what we are doing. In closing, do allow me share with you one of my favourite stories:

The Starfish StoryOriginal Story by: Loren Eisley

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently

throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you

doing?”The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the

ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t

throw them back, they’ll die.”“Son,” the man said, “don’t you realize there are

miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference!”

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf.

Then, smiling at the man, he said…”I made a difference for that one.”

PP VG Chandran’s Rotary Information to the Club during the meeting on 5th July 2010 quoted the remarks from RI President Ray Klinginsmith “to keep Rotary simple”. We are reminded to reflect upon what are Rotarians passionate about. The RI President believes that it is fellowship and service. “Fun, friendship, and fellowship are our foundation stones, and we are passionate about them”.

It is so true that at times we forget that its passion that drives a Rotarian to carry on year after year. Passion for what Rotary stands for and its ability as a service organisation to serve the community. Passion is also having “fun, friendship, and fellowship” as they help to sustain this drive. Keeping Rotary “simple” appear to remind us not to make things overly complicated. Yes, we need structure, vision and committment to continue to grow. But at what price? Commitment comes from a firm belief in the things we do and in a service organisation where different Rotarians have different levels of commitment its natural not to have or expect each to have the same level of passion. Rotarians who seek wider greater Rotary goals graduate to the District and International arena. Does one look down upon the average Rotarian who seems to be at sea when it comes to deeper Rotary facts and information? Who is to do the work if there are no workers.

To some Rotary is a career, they have all the time to think, talk and be involved. To others they may have a struggling career and home to worry about in additon to their Rotary duties. Yet some may have their own private reasons for joining Rotary and appear to show passion. It is a universal truth that in all service organisations one can never expect 100% enthusiasm.

To have unity and a feeling of common goal and mission that is constantly sustained by “fun, friendship and fellowship” will go a long way .The Rotary 4-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do is afterall a statement and guide not only for our professional lives but a philosophy for cultivating a truthful, fair and beneficial relationship that ultimately build GOODWILL and BETTER friendships. Do we attempt to practice what we preach or its only a lip service.Or do we give the excuse that after all we are only human.

Pudu News

Sgt-at-Arms Rtn Stanley Pereira called the meeting to order at 1:10 pm and proceeded to introduce the visiting Rotarians and Guests. He then led in the singing of the National Anthem and proposed the loyal toast.

Finemaster was IPP Robin Tay and he appeared to be on a vengeance after having been fined the whole of the last year. He first fined the BOD of RY2010/11 RM2 each. President Choy Ying had made a fantastic start to the year at the Installation last evening and he relieved the President of RM10. He then turned to the OC of the Installation viz PE Steven Oon and praised him for doing a good job with a fine of RM2. He then doubled it as Steven did not wear green even though there was a stipulation to wear clothes with green colour. Those who didn’t wear the 66 badge last year had to pay RM2. He also fined all those who did not introduce any member to the club last year. Chairman of the PP Council PP Sim Bee had started to wear a tie for the new year and attracted a fine. Others who started to wear new attire, e.g. coats, ties, like PP Michael Yeow, Rtn Sharon Lim and Rtn Sarky too had to pay a fine. Those who were active last year like PE Steven Oon (chairman of fellowship outing), PP Richard Liew , PP Gary Lim all had to fork out money. PP Kumar was late and paid for it. PP Phang was fined for doing the Souvenir Programme but the RM2 fine was paid by Robin. Others who were fined included the visiting AG, PDG Dr Paul Lee, Rtn Ashok Kumar, the lady Rotarians, Rtn Robert Tan, VP CT Heng for various offences. Birthday boys and girls for July were invited to cut a cake and that included PP Kumar, PP Phang, PP Sim Bee and Rtn Sandy.

Rotary Information prepared by PP V.G. Chandran was read by PE Steven Oon.

President Choy Ying was then invited to make the following announcements:

1) We had a successful installation dinner last night. She thanked OC Steven Oon for doing a fine job. We had good attendance from our sister clubs as well as other clubs. She also thanked PP Kumar for being the MC and his treasure trove of jokes.

2) On 3rd July, on the eve of the Installation we had a very enjoyable Fellowship dinner at PE Steven’s residence and also a Bak Kut Tea session by IPP Robin

3) Coming Friday, Rtn CT Heng and PP Gary and a few others would be making the journey to RC Songkhla’s Installation on the 10th July

4) On Sunday 11th July the District would be having a District Membership Seminar

5) On 17th July, the RC Cheras would be having their Installation and Rtn Sandy would be coordinating

6) 31th July. The Rotaract Club of Pudu would be having their Installation at the Lodge.

The speaker for the week was none other than the President who was going to make her maiden speech for the regular meeting as well as what to expect for the coming Rotary Year. She was introduced by PP Sim Bee who said that because it was also going to be the year where our own club was going to organize the district conference, we had to be prudent in terms of man power and finances. In any case he thought she had planned out some interesting projects and invited her to tell the audience what they were.

International Assembly Speeches 2010, San Diego, California, USA

18-24 January 2010

“What are Rotarians passionate about? I think it is fellowship and service! Fun, friendship, and fellowship are our foundation stones, and we are passionate about them. Without them, Rotary would be a much less effective organization. In regard to service, different Rotarians prefer different types of service, such as Youth Exchange, polio eradication, and literacy. Regardless of their preferred program, Rotarians are passionate about using the spirit of Rotary – and our Rotary program- to make the world a better place. Rotary clubs operate differently around the world, but they have a common purpose of fellowship and service. We have truly achieved “unity without uniformity” through our network of clubs, and if we help the clubs to bigger, better, and bolder, then clearly the best days of Rotary are still ahead!

Now the important question: What are we the best in the world at doing? Clearly, it is utilizing the Rotary network of more than 33,000 clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas to advance international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a wide variety of programs. Polio Plus has placed us on the world stage, and we are the premier service club organization in the world. But to heed my own advice to keep Rotary simple, and to adhere to “cowboy logic,” the shortest and simplest way to state what we are the best in the world at doing is through four simple words: BUILDING COMMUNITIES – BRIDGING CONTINENTS.

President Choy Ying in starting her speech disclosed that she would be outlining the plans for the year under the year’s theme of “Building Communities Bridging Continents”. She then explained that the RI President put forward the theme because he wanted to “explain Rotary to non Rotarians” and also the “explain the Rotary principles to Rotarians”.

Some of the general activities outlined by her included:1. Service & Fellowship: to promote this by having more

informal outings and to encourage senior members to participate

2. Membership development: to aim for an increase of nett 5 members for the year. All club activities were opportunities for membership development. To this she also added that members should be mindful and sensitive of the individual member’s circumstances.

3. District Conference: As we were the organizers of the conference we should be careful of our own resources and time.

4. PR: PP Albert Lim had targeted all projects for media coverage.

5. Rotary Foundation: PDG Dr Paul Lee had helped the club to apply for 2 matching grants and we had targeted US$6,200 for RF as well as to give support to the Polio challenge for which we had targeted US$2,000

6. CLP: This was the first year of CLP for the club and she will design plans with PE Steven and VP CT Heng for 3 years lifespan. She pledged to support subsequent presidents.

President Choy Ying gave an outline of our activities so far:1. New Generations: We had various meetings and

successfully carried out the ILTMC in March and the Rotarian Teacher Advisers’ Hi Tea in April.

2. We attended the last District conference in numbers3 We visited Hong Kong Harbour to attend the Charity

Ball and signed the reaffirmation of sister club relationship agreement with them

4. We successfully carried out our fund raising in May5. We attended some Interact Clubs’ installation e.g. Dato

Onn and Kwan Cheng as well as their IU day6. We held the first club assembly for the year7. On the 3rd July we had our sister club fellowship night8 And on the 4th July we had our Installation.

Other matters brought up by her include:- Raising Public Awareness of Rotary- Promoting our web site (PP Dato Muslim urging for

more updated photos)- PP Quah requesting for news for the Bulletin. - Rotary Foundation-support the contribution to EREY

and the PHF; support to end polio;support the district GSE activities; equip a computer lab and providing a library to two schools; promote our candidate for a peace scholarship; and continue to promote sister club activities.

She then outlined some specific programmes as follows:

club administration: The programme for the month of July were all ready

Service: We had plans to visit the Jenjarom Old Folks Home eg 8th Aug and 23rd Jan 2011- We were still consolidating our Environmental Protection

project- We plan to give out vocational Awards & to have the

Employer Employee luncheon

new Gen: We had the ILTMC, Rotarian Teacher Advisers Hi Tea, some IU nights for Interact.- We plan to have an Elocution contest with funds already

obtained and plans to celebrate the New Generations Month

Membership: We plan to have a Membership Dev night on the 16 Aug- Hold informal firesides for new Rotarians.

Scholarship: & Undergraduate Grants We hope to have the scholarship presentation as usual Vocational Scholarship: We also have plans to give out RM6,000 worth of scholarships

Thanking President Choy Ying was PDG Dr Paul Lee but it was more a chastise which should have been more decorous.

Pudu’s P.r. Machine

Did you know that PP Albert Lim has been ever so diligent with his position as the PR Man that his is known to have on occasions hand deliver invitations to the Press and Media. He also tirelessly briefs the organizers and would be on hand early at events to ensure that these invitees are welcome and attended to.

He also SMS everyone should our event is publicized on TV, giving the time and day! And if you think that’s all, did you know that after each event he goes to the newstand each day to ensure that he catches the news promptly, should it appear and alerts everyone else! What dedication, what a PR person!

Well, he may not be popular with the newspaper man but he sure is one dedicated Rotarian who embodies “Service above self,” and is always popular will the press & media community.

PP Kirenjit Kaur of R.C. Titiwangsa is amongst the early birds who have signed up for this Forthcoming 76th District 3300 Conference.

Re: 76th District 3300 Conference – Report by PP K.H. Low

This time around the Host Club of the 76th District Conference felt it appropriate to have the theme “ Conference with a Difference Again” for the upcoming event.

In 1988, when RC Pudu was the host club under the Chairmanship of PP Dato P.Y. Choong, we were very successful in organizing the District Conference at Genting Highlands with a theme “Conference with a Difference”. During this conference, the highlights included ex-Australian Premier Mr. Bob Hawke as our keynote speaker and the evergreen “Platters” serenaded us during the Governor’s Banquet Dinner. We also introduced the House of Friendship where fellow Rotarians could mingle around with lots of food and drinks. For this upcoming event, it will be held at the 5 Star Shangri-La Hotel, KL from the 10th – 12th December 2010.

To date we have almost 130 registrants out of which 20 are spouses. Thus far, we have 21 Rotarians from Pudu and 4 spouses. There are altogether 43 clubs who have registered and at this moment the Club that has the most registrants is R.C. Pudu. Our Incoming Governor K.B. Lim has graciously written a cheque to cover the cost of registration for 60 registrants from R.C. Pudu. We would strongly encourage all Pudu Rotarians to quickly sign up to make it to 60 or more. The request from our Rotaractors for a concession rate as they would like to attend is being considered.

Two (2) partner Clubs have graciously accepted to partake in the organizing of this conference. They are R.C. Central Damansara and R.C. Danau Desa. R.C. Central Damansara will be involved in the organizing of the House of Friendship and R.C. Danau Desa will be handling the Welcome Nite.

On the Welcome Nite, we will be turning the Ballroom into a beach. I am sure we will be having a lot of fun on the evening. At this moment, the organizing committee is awaiting the confirmation of the Keynote speaker and the Guest of Honour for the Governor’s Banquet.

For those who are keen to learn more about the conference, come and join us at every last Wednesday 6.30pm at the Royal Lake Club.

Thank you.

Regards

Thank you.

Pudu’s P.r.
