  • ...and 8 more world cup. I enjoy watching it but I don't see why we have to pretend we'renot seeing what we're seeing. Outfield play, while slower and less physicalthan in men's football, has the technical quality to make it interesting. With afew exceptions, keepers are extremely poor though, take this from someonethat has regularly watched Romanian 4th/5th division matches in the past 3years due to my team's circumstances. There isn't this kind of constantmishandling there.I see a lot of people on this sub during this tournament thinking they'redefending women's football when what they actually do is expect everyoneelse to refrain from all criticism and instead treat the players like fragilesnowflakes.permalink parent

I see a lot of people on this sub during this tournament thinking they're defending women's football when whatthey actually do is expect everyone else to refrain from all criticism and instead treat the players like fragilesnowflakes.

No one expects players to be free from criticism. That's a dramatic and overblown statement. Some of us are just sick and fucking tired of reading comments like these on threads about women's football, especially for a goal that could have occurred at any level. If you're surprised at a deflection off of a save attempt at a near post, you either haven't played football or watchedenough to even have an opinion. I've seen this happen time and time again and at different levels. It's the type ofplay that 8 times out of 10 would have gone the goalkeeper's way. Unfortunately, this time it didn't. But there's noneed to become dramatic and say that all you have to do in a women's World Cup match is shoot at the goal. It'smisogynistic, simple-minded and unnecessary.I would be happy to read valid criticism on threads about women's football. But instead it's just the constantparroting from people like yourself that feel the need to repeat the same trite statements about women's football notbeing on the same level as that of their male counterparts. It's not original, it's unbelievably repetitive and it just derails threads that could be much more substantial if theyfocused on the plays and not the same tired determinations from people that just can't seem to accept the fact thatwomen play football.EDIT: What I was hoping to talk about when I opened this thread in the first place is Alex Morgan's incredibly dumbdecision to shoot at goal from a terrible angle. She should have cut back and passed to at least one of twoteammates that had run into the box and were in better positions to score. However, she got extremely lucky andgot the deflection, so it counts, but in my opinion it was a bad play.permalink parent

Alex Morgan's decision to shoot was probably influenced by the level of goalkeeper she is up against. There hasbeen more mistakes leading to goals in this competition from goalkeepers than I have seen in any 'professional'tournament. I know it's only women's soccer, but the standard has been remarkably poor. I don't know how youcan call people misogynistic for criticizing the level of women's soccer. It is at a poor level relative to men's. Infact, it's about the level you'd expect to see in u15 men's football. This point is evidenced by friendlies played bythe women's national us team against the men's u14 in which they allegedly lost 5-1. There are countless otherexamples. It isn't sexist, it's just a fact.permalink parent

Poor keeping for sure. It will be interesting to see if the US can keep playing good defense and steal the odd goal hereand there. Alex Morgan is looking more match fit and that is something to see if there is space behind the opposingback line.permalink
