A very warm welcome to the opening concert of our 2016/17 season!
It marks the beginning of an exciting new season, one which I look forward
to sharing and cherishing with you. The concert features three brilliant and
virtuosic orchestral works inspired by philosophy: Strauss meets Nietzsche
in the legendary Also sprach Zarathustra, Bernstein meets Voltaire in the
witty and whimsical Candide Overture and Canada’s own Derek Charke meets
Plato’s Symposium in tonight’s world premiere, commissioned for the NAC
Orchestra by Harvey and Louise Glatt. Each of these works interprets some of
philosophy’s greatest thinkers through music and opens us up to a seductive,
compelling and abstract metaphysical world! Of course, the cherry on tonight’s
cake is Joshua Bell’s return to the NAC, interpreting Brahms’s immortal and
ravishingly beautiful Violin Concerto… Welcome and enjoy!

Overture to Candide
The aperitif on tonight’s concert is a
delectable, four-minute morsel that
sparkles with all the brilliance and wit
of the original book. Voltaire’s novel
Candide first appeared in 1759 as a biting,
satiric attack on the philosophical folly
of believing that “all is for the best in this
best of all possible worlds.” Nearly two
centuries later (December 1, 1956), a
comic operetta based on Voltaire’s novel
opened on Broadway, adapted by Lillian
Hellman and with lyrics by Richard Wilbur.
The play failed, but the overture soon
took on a life on its own, and has become
one of the most popular orchestral works
of the twentieth century. The composer
conducted the New York Philharmonic
in the first concert performance on
January 26, 1957. Bright sonorities,
jazzy syncopations, energetic melodies,
irresistible charm and a sassy ambiance
constitute the mix of ingredients that
bubble and froth to produce the Overture
to Candide.
LEONARD BERNSTEINLawrence (Massachusetts), 25 août 1918 New York, 14 octobre 1990
Richard Wilbur, a lieu à Broadway.
l’Orchestre philharmonique de New York
lors de la première représentation, le
26 janvier 1957. Sonorités éclatantes,
syncopes jazzy, mélodies énergiques,
charme irrésistible et ambiance délurée
constituent le mélange d’ingrédients
pétillants et mousseux qui donnent
naissance à l’ouverture de Candide.
The NAC Orchestra performed Bernstein’s Overture to Candide for the first time in 1980 under the direction of Erich Kunzel and most recently in June 2016, in a Pops concert with Jack Everly on the podium.

JOHANNES BRAHMSBorn in Hamburg, May 7, 1833Died in Vienna, April 3, 1897
Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77
Brahms’s Violin Concerto ranks today
alongside Beethoven’s (also in D major)
as one of the two greatest ever written.
In it, he brings together ardent lyricism
and architectural strength in perfect
proportion. The whole concerto has been
called a “song for the violin on a symphonic
scale,” built with magnificent themes that
“blossom before us like opening flowers in
a richly stocked garden” (Hubert Foss). It
dates from 1878, which places it between
the Second and Third Symphonies.
The concerto opens with a relaxed
theme in the lower strings, bassoons
and horns — a characteristically warm,
Brahmsian scoring. It takes only a few
moments to realize that this is going to
be a concerto on a grand scale. After
presentation of several more thematic
ideas, the soloist enters with a flourish,
which develops into a long, quasi-cadenza
before eventually settling down to repeat
the themes first heard in the long orchestral
exposition. Additionally, the violin first
presents a new theme, rapturously flowing
and waltz-like. Brahms left the cadenza
to the discretion of the soloist. Many have

(Huber Foss). Il date de 1878, ce qui le
situe entre les Deuxième et Troisième
symphonies.
Le Concerto s’ouvre sur un thème
détendu confié aux cordes basses, aux
bassons et aux cors — une orchestration
chaleureuse, typique de Brahms. On
s’aperçoit assez vite qu’il s’agit là d’un
concerto d’une ampleur considérable.
Après l’énoncé de plusieurs autres idées
thématiques, le soliste fait son entrée avec
une fioriture qu’il développe longuement
en une quasicadence, avant de s’apaiser
pour reprendre les thèmes initialement
entendus dans la longue exposition
Itzhak Perlman was soloist for the NAC Orchestra’s first performance of Brahms’s Violin Concerto in
1972, under the direction of Mario Bernardi. Pinchas Zukerman was the violinist when the ensemble
last played this concerto, in 2008, with Zubin Mehta conducting. Other soloists who have played this
work with the Orchestra over the years include Gil Shaham, Nikolaj Znaider and Viviane Hagner.

been written since the original one by the
violinist Joseph Joachim, Brahms’s close
friend and advisor in all matters pertaining
to this instrument.
The long, serene oboe solo that begins
the second movement is one of the most
gorgeous melodies Brahms ever wrote,
and it serves to remind us that Brahms was
one of the great song composers of the
nineteenth century. The central portion of
the movement shifts to the minor mode,
and has been described as soaring into
“impassioned melancholia.” The final
part of the ternary-form (ABA) movement
begins with a re-statement of the oboe
theme accompanied by new figurations
from the violin.
The bold and fiery finale, the only
movement full of virtuosic display, is
a slightly modified rondo structure
(ABACBA) whose principal theme is
marked by a Hungarian gypsy flavour.

orchestrale. De plus, le violon introduit
un nouveau thème fluide et ravissant,
faisant songer à une valse. Brahms laisse
la cadence à la discrétion du soliste. De
nombreuses cadences ont ainsi été écrites
depuis l’originale de Joseph Joachim, ami
intime et conseiller de Brahms pour toutes
questions concernant cet instrument.

Charke is a professor of composition
at Acadia University, he co-directs the
Acadia New Music Society, and performs
regularly on the flute. Although his
music tends to defy categorization, it
has been described as post-modern
and post-minimal, inventive, richly
textured, full of colour, and imbued with
drama and rhythmic vitality. Recent
works include Drift for the piano duo
Duo Turgeon, a work that muses on

After Chaos, the Earth and Love came into being
After Chaos takes its title and concept
from the ancient Greek philosopher and
poet Hesiod, whose words are contained
in Plato’s Symposium:
First Chaos came, and then broad-
bosomed Earth,
The everlasting seat of all that is,
And Love.

impressionnante d’autres interprètes et
formations. Derek Charke est professeur
de composition à l’Université Acadia. Il
codirige également l’Acadia New Music
Society, et se produit régulièrement
comme flûtiste. Bien que sa musique
soit difficile à ranger dans une catégorie,
on la décrit comme postmoderne,
postminimaliste, inventive, richement
texturée, pleine de couleurs, théâtrale
et pourvue d’une extraordinaire vitalité
rythmique. Parmi ses œuvres récentes,
mentionnons Drift pour le Duo Turgeon
(piano), une pièce qui contemple l’effet
produit par la poudrerie. Tangled in Plastic
Currents, écrite pour Jeffrey Zeigler,
ancien violoncelliste du Quatuor Kronos,
évoque les sacs de plastique qui engorgent
notre océan. Earth Airs, sa Symphonie no 2
composée pour l’Orchestre symphonique
de la Nouvelle-Écosse, explore la nature
infinie de l’air. Il a également composé
de nombreuses œuvres pour la flûte,
dont deux concertos de chambre et
une série populaire d’œuvres pour
ensembles de flûtes. Pour de plus amples

After Chaos, the Earth and Love came into being

In other words, After Chaos, the Earth and
Love, these two, came into being.
“My work speaks to the idea of what
happens after the ‘big bang,’” states
Charke, “after the creation of the universe,
the chaos that immediately ensues, and
about putting things back together. The
twelve-minute work is in three parts. The
first, which opens with offstage trumpets
and a solo violin, is slow, melancholic and
lyrical. The second is active and plays on
ideas derived from various modal scales
that allude to ancient Greek music, though
without attempting in any way to recreate
it. The brief third section returns material
similar to that of the opening.”

Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30
Following the sensational successes
Strauss enjoyed from his three previous
symphonic poems, Don Juan (1888),
Death and Transfiguration (1889) and
Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks (1895),
the world’s most talked-about living
composer cast about for ideas for
another orchestral extravaganza. This
turned out to be Also sprach Zarathustra
(Thus Spake Zarathustra), inspired by
the philosophy of the Persian mystic
Zarathustra (Zoroaster), who lived about
600 BC, as related in Friedrich Nietzsche’s
eponymous prose-poem of the same
title, completed in 1885. Strauss himself
conducted the first performance with
the Orchestra of the Frankfurt Museum
Concerts on November 27, 1896.
RICHARD STRAUSSMunich, 11 juin 1864 Garmisch Partenkirchen, 8 septembre 1949
Also sprach Zarathustra, opus 30
que prend forme Also sprach Zarathustra
(Ainsi parlait Zarathoustra), poème
symphonique inspiré par la philosophie
du mystique persan Zarathoustra
(Zoroastre), qui vécut aux alentours
de 600 avant notre ère, telle qu’exposée
dans le poème en prose éponyme de
Friedrich Nietzsche, achevé en 1885.
Strauss dirigea lui-même la première avec

Strauss was not attempting to translate
philosophy into sound in his Zarathustra.
He insisted that he “meant rather to
convey in music an idea of the evolution of
the human race from its origin, through the
various phases of development, religious
as well as scientific, up to Nietzsche’s
idea of the Übermensch.” There is no
explicit story or program to follow, only
a generalized line of thought. Strauss
strings together eight connected musical
episodes, each entitled with a chapter
heading from Nietzsche’s Zarathustra.
(Each section of Nietzsche’s work ends
with the words “Also sprach Zarathustra”;
hence, Strauss’s title.) Across these eight
sections he conveys in musical terms
the ongoing conflict of Man with Nature
– Man’s aspirations to rise above his
lowly origins. To give concrete musical
substance to this conflict, Strauss uses
two adjacent but harmonically distant
keys, C major for Nature and B minor for
Man. Throughout the score these two keys
are often heard in close juxtaposition, and
sometimes even concurrently.
The eight sections following “Sunrise”
are as follows:
OF THE BACKWORLDSMEN — Man in
his primitive state makes his first, tentative
inquiries about life and faith.
OF GREAT LONGING — This section
opens with a rapid, surging presentation
of the Man motif, indicating that his quest

(Chaque
section du poème philosophique de
Nietzsche s’achève par les mots « Also

he is still in conflict with Nature and the

OF PLEASURES AND PASSIONS —
Dense polyphony, ornate melodic lines,
sweeping glissandos for the harps, and
orchestral virtuosity combine in music of
great expressiveness, as the philosopher
reflects on his passionate nature.
THE GRAVE SONG — Further
development of ideas already presented,
beginning with the oboe singing the
main theme of the previous section,
accompanied by cellos and bassoons with
the Man motif.
OF SCIENCE — For one of the most
remarkable passages in the score, Strauss
employs a fugue, the most “learned” (i.e.,
scientific) of all musical forms.
THE CONVALESCENT — Further
development of the scientific Fugue
subject, led off by the trombones, which
comes into conflict with the Satiety
motif. At the climax of this extraordinarily
energetic, frighteningly turbulent music,
the entire orchestra, supported by the
organ, thunders out the Nature motif.
DANCE SONG — This is Richard
Strauss’s first use of a waltz, the special
domain of an earlier Strauss of a different
family. Beginning in a light-hearted and
gay manner, the music eventually gathers
energy, whirling its way to an orgiastic
climax as a bell tolls twelve times.
THE NIGHT WANDERER’S SONG —
The music settles into a quiet C major,
then slips gently into B major. The Spirit
of Man would seem to have found peace,
happiness and fulfillment. But has it truly?
Basses softly intone the Nature motif in C,

four and at 12 began studying with Josef
Gingold at Indiana University. At 14, he
performed with Riccardo Muti and the
Philadelphia Orchestra, and at 17, made his
Carnegie Hall debut. He made his debut
with the NAC Orchestra in 1990 and most
recently performed in recital on the Great
Performers series in 2015.
of St Martin in the Fields en 2011, et est
Sir Neville Marriner.
tout dernier enregistrement, For the Love of
Brahms, paru le 30 septembre, est le fruit
d’une collaboration avec Steven Isserlis,
l’Academy of St Martin in the Fields et
Jeremy Denk.
