Spring has finally arrived (albeit with a few snow flurries), any day now the flowers will be ‘springing’ into life and we’ll be enjoying light evenings with a Pimms in one hand and a garden trowel in the other (well, perhaps not a garden trowel in our case!) As of next month, this magazine will be divided in half to create the ‘Bolsover Voice’ covering Broadmeadows and South Normanton and Amber Valley Voice - Alfreton edition, which will cover Oakerthorpe, South Wingfield and the surrounding area. This is in addition to the existing Amber Valley Voice - Swanwick, Riddings, Leabrooks and Somercotes edition...so we will be delivering to over 10,000 homes in total from next month. This month we have lots of articles for you to peruse, About Backs and Bones, Smith Craven, Body and Sole with a fantastic offer for our readers. Of course we have a wonderful offer from Tile Town and Glendair. Our very own Carla has submitted her own recipe for us this month, so if you have a favourite that you would like to share, please contact us….and the same goes for your favourite dog walks and pictures and community events. Remember this is your magazine and it has your best interests at heart, so please contribute and share!

See you next month,

Emily

Leek, Potato and Stilton Soup

I’ve been making this soup for several years now and it’s so delicious and easy to make that

even the husband voluntarily makes it from time to time!

Ingredients 25g butter

2 leeks

250g potatoes (peeled and chopped into chunks)

1.2 litres hot vegetable stock

2 bay leaves

100ml single cream

125g Stilton

Salt and pepper to season

Melt the butter into a large pan, add the leeks and soften. Add the potatoes, stock and bay leaves

and season with a little salt and pepper. Cover with a lid and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15

minutes until the potatoes have softened. Stir in the cream and stilton until the stilton has melted.

Remove the bay leaves and blend using a hand blender ………..voila!

Enjoy!

This is our very own Carla’s recipe, if you have a favourite recipe that you would like to submit, send it into [email protected]

Alfreton Neighbourhood update

PC Sharon Evans, PCSO Simon Childs, PCSO Tracey Barks, PCSO Chris Hurt and PCSO Paul Hubber are your local officers for Alfreton Town Centre. We are led by Sgt. Simon Street and our team is dedicated to targeting community concerns, keeping the area safe and reducing anti-social behaviour.

In this edition of Amber Valley Voice, we would like to remind people to pay a little attention to your shed or garage security as it won’t be long before we will all be tidying the garden or making the most of the nicer weather. By taking just a few steps you can help to reduce the potential of their outhouses being targeted by an opportunist thief.

The most important thing to do is to make sure your garage, shed or outhouse is secured using a good quality lock. Take a look around what you store in your shed. Bicycles, power tools and other equipment could be costly to replace so chain valuable items to a strong anchor point on the ground. Mark equipment using a forensic property marking fluid and register them with a secure database such as Immobilise (www.immobilise.com) to help police trace them back to you should they be stolen and recovered.

Consider installing security lighting which is triggered by movement or an alarm. Never leave items unattended and insecure. Even items which you don’t think are worth stealing could be valuable to a potential thief who may take the opportunity to use your ladders or tools to break into a property.

Finally, if you are out in the garden make sure your home is secure. Make sure all your ground floor windows and doors are closed and locked so that your home can’t be targeted while you are distracted.

Remember to report any suspicious activity and if you would like advice, or have any concerns you would like to discuss then contact your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team by calling 101, the non-emergency number for Derbyshire police.

This month we have a nice walk from Alfreton Park that takes you through some of the local countryside you might not ordinarily get a chance to see. There are lots of opportunities to let your dog off the lead but there is one small stretch of road to walk along so take good care. We always want to hear your favourite local walks so please drop us a line. You don’t need to have a map or even a detailed description, just let us know roughly where you go and you may see it featured in the magazine soon. Email at [email protected] or by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638.

6 mile walk From Alfreton Park by Shirland Golf course and Four Lane Ends This fun walk for you and your dog offers the opportunity to see some of the local countryside with some really nice views. The route will take around 2 1/2 to 3 hours. It is fairly undulating and the terrain can be muddy and uneven so a good pair of

boots are a must.

1. Park in the free car parking spaces at Alfreton Park and begin the walk on the bridle path near the entrance that takes you around the outside the park up to Alfreton Hall.

2. Where the path crosses another turn right, heading around the back of Alfreton Hall and join up with Church Street. Walk past the Leisure Centre and take the next left towards St Martins Church.

3. At the church follow the path left that takes you towards the entrance and then take the flagstone path around the outside of the church before crossing a stile.

4. Take the bridle track straight ahead and follow it until it meats a metal gate. Cross the stile and turn left continuing along the track as it veers right and takes you across a bridge.

5. Walk straight ahead to the corner of the field and cross the stile. Turn right and walk up to the corner of the next field again crossing a stile. Follow the path along side the fence as it takes you up to towards the farm buildings.

6. When you reach the farm building turn left onto the track then right heading up past the houses and onto a single track road.

7. Carry on along the road until you reach the Shirland Golf Club entrance. Walk down, past the club house and join a bridle path at the end of the car park. At the signposted crossroads take the path on the left that takes you around the outside of the golf club.

8. At the end of the path cross a stile on your right and walk uphill on the outside of the field. Halfway up the hill cross a stile on your left and cross the field to a gap in the fence. Turn right and carry on uphill.

9. At the road cross the stile and turn left taking great care as you walk along the road into Toadhole Furnace. At the pub cross the road to use the pavement and carry on along the B6013 Belper Road. Cross the road again to use the pavement. After passing over the bridge cross to the right hand side of the road and take a stile by a metal gate.

10. Follow the right hand track across the field and take a stile in the middle of the hedge. Carryon straight across the next field towards another stile located above the house.

11. Walk down the steps and cross the road with care. Turn left and take a path signposted on the right after the house.

12. Pass through a gate and walk along the path, with the wall on your right. Cross a stile and continue across another field. At the corner take the gated path into the next field. Carry straight on and cross a stile before turning left and follow-ing a path uphill. At the top of the field pass behind an old ruined building and cross the stile.

13. Walk along the path to the main road and take care as you cross. To the left of a road sign cross a stile by a metal gate. Walk through the farmyard and coss the stile on the right by the red gate.

14. Turn left and walk along the path with the hedge on your left through 4 fields. Cross the stile at the end of the path and cut across the field on the path to join the wide farm track that takes you back towards St Martins Church. From here you can reverse your route back to Alfreton Park.

This walk is for illustrative purposes only. The Amber Valley Voice takes no responsibility for anyone who

chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the

area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

Registered Osteopaths

and Physiotherapists

who can help in

relieving your pain

We generally think of children as having life a bit easier on the joint and muscle spectrum and thankfully, on the whole, they do and bounce back well after falls. However, many adult joint problems start in childhood and can be avoided.

Some children are under repetitive strain in their daily life; whether it be carrying heavy bags to school or sitting on poorly designed seats for much of their day. Not to mention the positions they manage to contort themselves into once they get in front of the computer or TV. Simply emptying their bag of non-essential clutter (and that applies to your bag too Mum!) and keeping the bag as small as possible to avoid the temptation of filling it up are simple ways to minimise back, shoulder and neck pain. Even better, use a rucksack until peer pressure overcomes sanity!

Posture

Nagging your child to sit or stand properly will be remembered into adulthood too and, yet again, they will thank you for it. Indeed, many of the chil-dren seen in our clinic are there to hear the same advice from a ‘professional’ as it is deeply embedded postural habits which cause most adult muscle and joint pain.

Even when children are active and enjoying sport they can run into trouble; most cope with avoiding adequate warm-ups and cool-downs – usually until their late 20’s/early 30’s when the need becomes more obvious. Sometimes, if they are doing a lot of sport or if it

involves sudden running/stopping/starting , they can be prone to Osgood-Schlatters or Severs disease which are painful lumps under the kneecap and on the heel respectively. They become permanent lumps and are a result of excessive muscle pulling on the bone.

Those good at gymnastics may be over flexible, which can lead to imbalances in the trunk soft tissue and can lead to back pain when the activity is stopped later on. Sometimes, children are naturally hyper flexible, and the contortions which they love to get themselves into can demonstrate an instability which can be problematic as adults.

Let kids be kids and enjoy themselves, I say, but a little awareness can go a long way in avoiding some common adult pain problems –and lets face it –they won’t worry themselves about it so a prompt from someone who takes it seriously is not a bad thing!!

Don’t forget to mention the Amber Valley Voice when responding to Ads

Canada by Richard Ford

You’re a 15-year-old and your parents suddenly do something completely out of character. Something which changes their lives and yours in an instant. Something which you could never foresee. After all when you’re a child nothing changes, it seems, for ever. Canada by Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Ford starts with the lines “First I’ll tell about the robbery our parents committed. Then about the murders which happened later.” This is the story of Dell Parsons. The bank robbery his Mum and Dad commit in 1960s small-town Montana is ridiculous. But desperate. And this one event defines Dell for the rest of his life. His parents are captured almost immediately. In a sense it’s Dell who’s on the run. And once you’re pushed outside, once the lines have been crossed, it may be hard to know what’s right and what’s not. We think of people who commit crimes as being somehow different and bad. Maybe they can also be ordinary people who get into the wrong place, suggests this novel. The suspense in this book comes from wanting to know what happens to Dell; the story is all in his words. The big events happen somewhere else but it’s a powerful examination of events overtaking a life, of the uncertainty of growing up, of how strangely a person’s life can turn out.

After a long wet winter we hope that the sun will soon begin to shine on a battered Britain. We want to emerge from the smog and gloom with healthy, sun kissed skin. Months of cold winds, central heating and overindulgence have left us with dull lifeless complexions, but don’t worry as Heather is at hand with her top tips to put a spring back in your skin that will last all summer long and not break the bank on the way! Why not try the Mavala Skin Care Range with Mallow extract known for its anti-redness and refreshing properties?

Follow these three quick steps twice a day for a fresher looking Spring skin. Don’t forget to include your neck for a younger looking you!

Tips:

Cleanse your skin - Adopt a good cleansing re-gime using a light cleansing milk. Apply the product with fingertips in small circles, wipe off with damp cotton pads or rinse with warm water. Try Mavala Comfort Cleansing Milk

150ml for £10.50 or Foaming Cleanser for oily to combination skin 165ml for £15.99.

Tone your skin with a gentle toner to close the pores. Damp a cotton pad and apply a few drops of one of the Mavala toners – Smooth Toning Lotion for normal to dry skin or Specific Toning Lotion for oily to combination skin – both 150ml for £10.50.

Moisturise your skin with a light moisturiser. Warm a little of the product in your hands and apply with gentle sweeping strokes. Try Mavala’s Multi-vitamin day cream to maintain moisture levels and provide your skin with firming and nutritive support - £13 for 30ml. Try also Mavala’s Hydro Active night cream for cell regeneration, and it’s firming, protecting properties – £13 for 30ml. Try to avoid the eye area with your moisturisers as they are too heavy for this delicate area. Instead, apply a gentle eye contour cream on the brow bone and under the eye. Pat this in very gently with your ring finger to avoid pulling the delicate skin in this area.

Try Mavala’s Eye Contour Smoothing Emulsion - 15ml for £15.

Extra Spring help - exfoliate your skin twice a week to eliminate dead skin cells and imperfections and speed up cell renewal. Try Mavalas Smooth Exfoliating Cream – 75ml for £15.50.

Now is a good time to look forward to 2013/14 and assess who will be earning what in your family. The tax free personal allowance limit will increase to £9,440 per person. So if someone in your family is earning less that this their personal allowance is going to waste. There are a few strategies that you may consider to avoid wasting allowances:

· Employing your spouse or children in your business

· Transfer an income producing as-set, such as a rental property or savings account, into the name of your spouse

· Ensuring that the higher earner makes all the family gift aid dona-tions

The strategies need to be implemented correctly so please contact us for advice before proceeding.

Real Time Information (RTI) From the 6th April RTI will be compulsory for most employers, requiring a Full Payment Submission to be made to HMRC every time an employee is paid rather than just once after the end of the tax year as is currently the case.

To cut down on reporting admin, many one-person companies may wish to pay the director just once a year and avoid monthly RTI reporting. If you want to do this, you must first check that your payroll software will cope with an annual payroll, as many main-stream payroll software packages do not. The second stage is to understand what reports HMRC will require under RTI. Current HMRC guidance states that an annual payroll must be registered with HMRC and you must use the same month every year. If you don’t register the payroll as being annual you will need to submit an Employer Payment Summary (EPS) to HMRC every month, which shows nil payments made to the employee. If you need any advice about RTI please contact us.

Top Tip If you’ve suffered from daffodil blindness this year deadhead those which

have flowered and leave foliage (unknotted) for six weeks. Feed with tomato feed to fatten up the bulbs and divide if crowded.

Cornus or willow grown for winter colour should be cut back hard now. This will encourage good colour next year.

Fork out weed seedlings before they have a chance to

establish and strip dead stems out of perennial patches to give new growth lots of room.

Prune established bush and standard roses as soon as

they start growing but before the leaves start to unfurl.

Here at Amber Valley Media, we do like to practise what we preach and sample all the products and services that we advertise to ensure that we are promoting the best possible providers in the area and binsured is no exception.

When we went away last year, binsured sorted out our holiday cover and bear in mind that my husband is a stickler for online insurance and ensuring that we get the best price possible, we were ecstatic when we could ask all the specific questions regarding cover to an actual person...Wendy...and get answers and get the same prices but with customer service and no hassle. I have now secured business insurance with them and will be going to them in future for everything else!
