1.2Solving Linear
& Literal Equations Learning Target:
I can solve linear equations and literal equations.[A.CED.1, A.REI.3]
Algebra I Review
Literal Equations - equations with multiple variables where you are asked to solve for just one of the variables.
- represent formulas from science or geometry
To solve literal equations - use same process you use to isolate the variable in an algebraic equation with one variable.
**BE CAREFUL NOT TO COMBINE UNLIKE TERMS!!!
1. Solve E = IR for R
Solve the formula for the indicated letter.
2. v = v0 + at , solve for a
Q = c - d2
, solve for c4.3. V = l w h ,solve for l
A = bh12
5. The equation is used to find the area, A, of a triangle, where b represents the base of the triangle and h represents the height of the triangle. Based on this formula, what is the height, h, in terms of A and b?
6. The surface area of a cylinder is given by S = 2 π r h + 2 π r 2, where r
is the radius of the circular base and h is the height of the cylinder. What is the height of the cylinder, h, in terms of the radius and surface area?
Write a linear model (equation) and solve each problem.
7. A 300m long wire is used to fence a rectangular plot whose length is twice its width. Find the length and width of the plot.
8. Sarah spent half of her weekly allowance playing mini-golf. To earn more money, her parents let her wash the car for $4. What is her weekly allowance if she ended with $12?
