A parabola is a curve consisting of all points in the coordinate plane that are the same distance from a given point (the focus) and a given line (the directrix).

Let's take a look at some properties of the parabola...

How can we write an equation for the given parabola at the right knowing that the focus is at (2, 3) and the equation for the directrix is y = ‐1?

OK, now the final piece of the puzzle...

What is on this graph that we haven't discussed?

Feb 144:36 PM

Equations of parabolas with vertical axes of symmetry have the parent functiony = x2 and are of the form y = a(x ‐ h)2 + k. These are functions. Equations ofparabolas with horizontal axes of symmetry are of the form x = a(y ‐ k)2 + h andare not functions. The parent graph for these equations is x = y2.

The coordinates of the focus and the equation of the directrix of a parabola are given.  Write an equation for each parabola.  Then draw the graph.
