CHILDHOOD

Keys mother did everything to keep her busy with ballet at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, swimming, gymnastics, basketball, and piano lessons at age seven.

Piano is what interested her the most. At age nine, she began writing her own songs and by age fourteen, she had written “Butterflyz” and “The Life,” both of which would make it into “Songs in A Minor.”

EARLY CAREER Exciting things started happening for Keys when she

was 16.

She was accepted into Columbia University on academic scholarships, graduated valedictorian from New York’s Professional Performing Arts School.

Keys presented the tracks to the execs at Columbia Records and told her to go back to the studio with established producers. For two years, she argued with execs until finally Columbia Records released her from the contract.

Keys then went later to sign on with music legend Clive Davis, the man who discovered Whitney Houston.

“Songs in A Minor” released in 2001

The album sold over 6.2 million copies in the United States and 12 million copies internationally.

Keys also became the bestselling new artist of the year. “Fallin” was one of the songs in her album that topped the charts for six weeks.

“Songs in A Minor,” also led Keys to win five awards at the 2002 Grammy Awards

Keys released her second album “The Diary of Alicia Keys” in 2003.

It sold over 4.4million copies in the US and 8 million copies worldwide.

Keys collaborated with Usher on the song “My Boo” this song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks.

Keys won four Grammy Awards in 2005

She released her third album “As I Am.”

The album sold three million copies in the US and sold five million worldwide.

“No One” album single also won Keys a Grammy Award in 2008

Keys also co-star in a film “Smokin’ Aces.”

In 2009 Keys collaborated with Jay-Z and Alejandro Sanz.
