I would, respectfully, suggest that the reader download the image directly from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory website to enable them to zoom in on the object picked out in the composite above.

This is – undeniably – a real object. (The only other credible explanation for it's presence here would be that NASA are deliberately manipulating imagesi to fool: for reasons that remain unexplained, the taxpayers that fund their entire organization to the tune of billions of dollars.)

So what are we to make of it? Are their any natural processes that could have produced this object? Wind or water erosion perhaps?

We are looking at a – somewhat beaten up - effigy here: an effigy with humanoid attributes, that has been carved in martian stone by an entity or entities unkown. Seriously, what else could it be? The evidence is – quite literally – staring us in the face.

This object features a malevolently glaring eye: complete with a pupil, recessed within a distinctly hexagonal eye socket.

(NB. Hexagons are well represented elsewhere in the Solar Systemii)

Then there's the open mouth: chock full of prominent, tombstone teeth.

Pay carefull attention to how the upper teeth align with the bottom. Again, we are forced to ask, is there any known, naturally random process that could produce such alignment?

The object does – of course – bear more than a passing resemblance to architectural features with which we are familiar. These are the gargoyles that adorn the outer and inner walls of churches and cathedrals.

So, in my estimation, I'm completely justified when referring to this object as: The Martian Gargoyle.

The presence of this object on the surface of Mars does, you will appreciate, raise many questions. What's more, these questions will begin to multiply – and the demand for answers will increase acutely – when it becomes clear that our gargoyle isn't the only anomalous artifact to have been found on the Red Planet.

This object hasn't got anything to do with the Opportunity Rover that took this picture with it's Microscopic Imaging Camera: it's not, for instance, a component that's fallen off – or a mark made by some intrument iii carried by the Rover.

With this composite I've enlarged the image and increased the contrast. I've also added annotations: these are only intended as guides to facilitate discussion. I really haven't a clue as to what this object is or it's intended function. All that I am sure of is that this is an ARTIFACT.

Please pay careful attention to how/where the 'Rectangular Extension' joins to the 'Circular Housing'. Here we can see what I've called a 'Flow Curve'. This indicates that whoever made/designed this artifact was concerned with both form and function.

Dear reader, somebody made these artifacts. What is more, the evidence that Mars was once inhabited by an intelligent, technological race is rapidly mounting. Who were they? What relation, if any, do they have to us? Will we ever get to meet them?

i There does seem to have been some alterations made to this image. Check out the area where the nose should be. Here we can see evidence that the ellipse selection tool (a feature of most image manipulation programs) was used to select an area of the image that was then blurred out using a filter designed to perform that function.
