Aligned LearningPlanning for Cognitively Demanding TasksWhat and Why (of DOK)?We believe that this will assist with rigor and making sure that what we teach and what we test is aligned with standards. It is important to PLAN for this type of instruction. As a teacher, you must be intentional when using DOK as a tool.DOK is a mechanism to ensure that the intent of the standard and the level of student demonstration required by the standard are aligned.

How confident am I that my classroom instruction accurately reflects published content standards and desired learning outcomes?5 minSmart Board number line with smiley face or stars or something beautiful

Informal means of self-assessmentCensogram is a tool that could be used in the classroom.

Data, Observations, Feedback, Conferences recognize a need for increasing the DOK in instruction and activities Proficiency is largely a measure of alignment to standardsGrowth is a reflection of rigor in the classroomWill examine in each area3Why Alignment Matters

4Depth of Knowledge

Introduction to DOK5Guiding Questions:What is DOK?Why is DOK important? How can I use DOK in planning for aligned instruction and assessments?Depth of Knowledge6What is Depth of Knowledge (DOK)?Focuses on content standards and the progression of cognitive demand required in order to successfully complete an assessment item or taskIdentifies the kind and level of thinking required of students to successfully engage with and solve a taskDescribes the ways in which students interact with content3-5 min

What is Depth of Knowledge (DOK)?Words in the middle DOK does not depend on the verb but rather on the context in which it is used.8Webbs Depth of Knowledge (DOK)Determine the DOK level for each question about the fork.

9Webbs Depth of Knowledge (DOK)Explain the function of the fork.Design an investigation to determine the optimal number and length of tines for a salad fork.Identify this utensil.Identify two examples of when a fork would not be the best utensil for a type of food and explain why.

11Why is DOK important?DOK is a tool to aid in the alignment analysis of curriculum, objectives, standards, assessments, and student tasks.Students must move through the entire progression of cognitive complexity.12

Activity Culture Theme goes with previous slide Cards where does it go?Discuss?Why?13Webbs Depth of Knowledge (DOK)Depth of Knowledge, which is integrated with the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy in the Hess Cognitive Rigor Matrix, is an important tool as schools begin to increase the rigor of assessments and instructional practices to align to the Common Core/Essential Standards.14Choose one of the following numbered statements below and Sum It UpStudents will need to be given tasks that require them to use NC World Language Essential Standards and allow discourse and risk-taking in the classroom. Focus on modifying and aligning 1) instructional strategies and materials that connect content, practices, conceptual understanding and application 2) classroom assessments that measure communication practices and global competencies skills.3) feedback that focuses on understanding and applicationand not just the correct answer.

15Support Resources for DOK toolsTeachers need to plan using DOK (collaborative planning form)During Focused Learning Walks, questions 3,4, and 5 should show DOK.Website for a set of tools and descriptors for DOK in the various content areas.http://www.stancoe.org/SCOE/iss/common_core/overview/overview_depth_of_knowledge.htm (several curriculum areas; teachers can select the language)

Activity for teachers to explore the use of DOK

Administrators can identify teachers on walkthroughs using the Focused Learning Walk form, questions 3,4, and 5.

16Make this prettyUsing DOK in PlanningLesson plans need to be intentional in identifying:What are the students going to be doing that is aligned to the identified standards? What will the teacher do that connects to the standards? What formative assessment strategies will be embedded in the lessons to monitor student understanding?

Bring back a plan that demonstrates this for the next PD.18Evidence of DOK in PlanningFor our next PD session, bring with you lesson plans that clearly demonstrate a varied use of DOK levels in instruction.
