The Dell|EMC CX4 Series of networked storage systems are designed to provide maximum availability, scalability and performance for Oracle® Enterprise Grid environments and ensure the highest service levels to the business at a lower cost. Today’s successful businesses are leveraging information in new ways to support important business decisions, identify areas of opportunity for innovation and efficiently align resources. IT managers are trying to satisfy requirements to store vast quantities of data at the lowest possible cost, and to meet new regulatory requirements for data retention and protection.

An Information Lifecycle Management approach leverages people, processes and tools to align the value of data to the business goals and the costs of the underlying infrastructure. The combination of Dell|EMC storage systems with advanced features of Oracle Database 11g can lower infrastructure costs while maintaining high performance operations and availability within transactional systems and data warehouse environments.

SCALABILITY, FLEXIBILITY AND HIGH PERFORMANCE FOR MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY ARCHITECTURESDell|EMC CX4 Series storage arrays provide a rich set of features that can enable flexibility, scalability and future-proofed innovation for Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Grid Architectures. The Dell|EMC CX4 architecture delivers twice the capacity scale (up to 960 drives), twice the memory, and twice the LUNs (up to 4,096 LUNs) as compared to the

ALIGNING THE VALUE OF INFORMATION WITH INFORMATION LIFECYCLE MANAGEMENT FROM DELL|EMC CX4 & ORACLE DATABASE 11g

SOLUTION BRIEF

THE DELL|EMC CX4 – SCALABLE, ENTERPRISE CLASS STORAGE FOR DATABASE WORKLOADS:

• CX4 delivers twice the capacity (up to 960 drives), twice the memory, and twice the LUNs (up to 4,096) with powerful 64-bit FLARE OS

• Flash drives perform faster with up to 30 times more IOPS than FC, higher density and 98%* lower energy use

• Fully Automated Storage Tiering automatically migrates data to the optimal storage tier

previous generations. The 64-bit FLARE operating system design provides a resilient infrastructure that supports critical and demanding workloads.

UltraFlex technology enables multi-protocol connectivity to grow on demand, enabling consolidation of multiple application workloads within the same storage system and the ability to incorporate future connectivity technologies without forklift upgrades. The Dell|EMC CX4 multi-protocol SAN supports both iSCSI and Fibre Channel as well as online hot pluggable expansion to help increase connectivity on the fly. In addition, data-in-place upgrades provide the ability for prior generation systems to be rapidly, non-disruptively converted to the newest Dell|EMC storage system.

Dell|EMC Storage offers flexibility and scalability in a compact design. Dell|EMC CX4 Series storage provide the ability to mix multiple drive types within a single system, including the new Enterprise Flash Drives (EFDs), Fibre Channel, and low power SATA, offering the ability to create storage tiers within a single system to meet varying performance and availability characteristics. Enterprise Flash Drives (EFDs) eliminate the need for short-stroking, providing ultra high performance using fewer drives, yielding more than 30X more IOPS per drive. EFD’s help provide substantial power savings as well for I/O-intensive applications, consuming up to 98 percent* less energy per I/O than 15K Fibre Channel drives. For capacity-intensive and streaming applications, low power SATA drives will consume up to 32 percent* less energy than traditional 7,200 rpm SATA drives.

OPTIMIZING UTILIZATION THAT LOWERS COSTS OF STORING DATAGiven the multi-tiered disk architecture of Dell|EMC CX4 systems, IT administrators can easily take advantage of Oracle Database 11g’s advanced partitioning and compression capabilities to cost-effectively manage growing databases. Partitioning enables tables and indexes to be split into smaller, more manageable components, a key requirement for any large database with high performance and high availability requirements. Oracle Partitioning can be combined with Dell|EMC Virtual LUN migration technology, allowing customers to grow their storage capacity on demand across the infrastructure enabling a more efficient storage management strategy. Using Virtual LUN migration, Oracle partitions can be optimally placed and non-disruptively migrated between storage tiers.

Dell|EMC CX4 storage systems are further enhanced with Fully Automated Storage Tiering (FAST) to automatically migrate data to the optimal storage tier according to administrator-defined policies.

Oracle Advanced Compression reduces the amount of disk space required to store data, delivering compression ratios of 2-4x, reducing network traffic and the amount of data to backup. Storage savings can be further enhanced by Dell|EMC Virtual Provisioning, an array-based feature to avoid allocating all required physical storage upfront, logically provisioning capacity for the future, but buying only what’s needed for today. Through advanced monitoring and alerts, IT administrators can expand storage resources online only as needed, optimizing storage capacity usage over time.

Oracle Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) Assistant streamlines database management, improve performance for mission-critical systems, and greatly reduce the cost of storing database data. Oracle ILM Assistant is a free downloadable Advisor tool that is used to define policy definitions, simulate their impact, illustrate potential storage savings, generate scripts to partition tables, and manage compliance and retention policies.

UNLEASH INNOVATION!Your business needs to be online 24x7x365 days a year. An Information Lifecycle Management approach, using Oracle Database 11g, Dell™ PowerEdge™ 11g Servers, and Dell|EMC CX4 storage Arrays, can enable organizations to simplify their infrastructure, maximizing scalability, flexibility and performance. Dell’s efficient enterprise vision is to help customers drive out unnecessary costs, freeing up resources and enhancing the return on investment from innovative projects that are at the heart of evolving your business.
