ALINJARRA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Dear Parents and Caregivers

It’s hard to believe that we are half way through the school year. Today students enjoyed being in their pyjamas, watching a movie and munching on popcorn as a reward for their great behaviour both inside their classrooms and around our school.

Also at this morning’s special assembly Melissa Green our P&C Treasurer weighed each class’s collection of 5 cent pieces. Collectively students brought in 56.26kg of five cent coins, totalling an incredible $988.75!!!

The winning class was EC3 Kindy Green with a total of 7.8 kg collected in 5 cent coins—they will receive a pizza lunch in the first week back at school next term. Room 5 was the closet estimate in the ‘Can you guess how many 5 cent coins fit in a 1.25litre bottle?’ competition and they will all receive a smoothie next term from our fabulous canteen. Thank you to everyone who so generously sent in their 5 cent coins to support our P&C—their fundraiser was a great success! Our choir opened the assembly by performing ‘You’re Welcome’, one of the songs they at the Ballandjarra Choir Fest last week. They performed with energy and true commitment, thank you.

STAFF CHANGES Next term one of our deputies, Mrs Janese McDougall will be away on a well deserved long service leave break for the first five weeks. We wish her all the best in her sporting and travel adventures.

We welcome Miss Laura Beahan and Mr Andrew Rowe to the leadership team. They will be sharing the role in Janese’s absence.

The following arrangements have been made:

Mrs Rheannon Glass will fill the Science role on Monday and Tuesday; and

Mr Bob Daymon will teach Room 18 on Wednesday and Thursday.

We are all looking forward to a busy and productive term 3. The Term 3 planner is on the last page of our newsletter. Pop it on the fridge! I hope all families enjoy spending time together and the break from school routines . Mari Dart SPECIALIST AREAS @ APS This edition of our newsletter features news from our specialist teachers at Alinjarra Primary School. Students across the school attend classes in the following learning areas:

The Arts—Music |Mrs Helen Southerland Digital Technologies | Mr Lewis Penny Science | Mr Andrew Rowe Italian | Mrs Simona DeMaio Physical Education | Miss Nikki Ganz MUSIC

Our Year 1 and 2 students attend an hour of music each week. This term they have been busy learning to read notes and play the xylophone! Not only do they get the chance to play instruments, they have also been learning how to sing in rounds. They have learnt a four part round and I am very impressed with their participation and interest in all things music.

The APS Choir thoroughly enjoyed their opportunity to perform at the Choirfest last week and they are busy preparing for their next public event—One Big Voice in August. Our head girl Charlotte auditioned and has been selected to perform in a ‘solo group’ - congratulations Charlotte! Mrs Southerland | Music Specialist

ITALIANO @ ALINJARRA Ciao a tutti! Well done to all the students who have been sharing with me what level they are up to on Duo Lingo! Bravissimi.

Students have been working hard and having lots of fun this semester. I’m especially proud of the students who having been taking risks in speaking the language, knowing it won’t be perfect the first time. Did you know that learning a language improves memory and brain function? Learning a language strengthens the area of the brain which is responsible for memory, speech and sensory perception. Bilingual people are better at retaining lists, sequences, names and directions. They are also more creative, perceptive and can concentrate for longer.

We have lots of exciting things planned for next semester, including a special visitor from Italia!! Buone vacanze! Happy holidays! Mrs Simona DeMaio | Italian Specialist

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES TERM 2 This term in digital technologies, the Year One and Year Two students have been discovering Bee-Bots. A Bee-Bot is a programmable floor robot that looks just like a bee. The students have been working together to program the robot to move from one area to another. Not only have they been learning how to code the Bee-Bot to move around, but they have also been using

directional language such as left, right, forwards and backwards. Students are becoming familiar with different points of view and have also en-joyed creating imaginative stories to explain where the Bee-Bots are travelling to on the grids. Mr Lewis Penny | Digital Technologies LIBRARY NEWS We have just finished a very challenging and ex-citing semester in the library. We had a new li-brary system installed, which caused a few hiccups, but is now up a running smoothly. A great BIG THANKYOU to Ms Carey. Book Fair was moved to Semester 1, which was another success, with a big thank you to the P & C, staff, and library monitors. We raised just over $1500.00 for the library. Next term, Book Week (Find Your Treasure) celebrations commence in Week 5 on Thursday 16 August starting with Room 12 and the Library Monitors assembly, with a ‘come dressed as a book character day’ and will continue into Week 6 with big book sales (details to follow), and various activities. Our wonderful library monitor team (Hayley, So-phia, Kim, Piper and Abdismad) are doing an amazing job at lunchtime helping students and tidying up the computer area. Also I would like to mention the extra helpers who help in the library before school - Mina, Mozghan, Harry, Sophie and Paige. The library is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8 am to 4 pm. All students are welcome to participate in extra borrowing before and after school on these days. Ms Maura Carey | Library Officer

Biological Science has been the focus in Term 2. Topics have included classifying living things, life cycles, adaptations and the human impact of our environment. Students have enjoyed exploring our school grounds to

find mini beasts and different species of plant life. The Year One classes had a great time handling snails and discovering their main features. There were very nervous students in the beginning, but in the end, they were very comfortable letting the snails move on their hands.

The Science Club has been very busy this year. Selected Year Five and Six students

meet once a week to explore anything and everything in Science that interests them. Students have used many forms of technology to design and create all sorts of unusual gadgets. During first term, the scribble bots were a crazy invention that evolved into a hovercraft type of vehicle.

In Term 2, students have focused on programming robots. They have programmed their robots to spin, navigate through mazes and even attempted a Mexican Wave with a group of robots. There have been many successes and failures, but everyone is having a great time. The enthusiasm of the students has been outstanding, which is what makes the club a great success. Stay tuned for upcoming news on what’s happening in Science in future newsletters. Next term, the school website (http://www.alinjarraps.wa.edu.au) will also have news and information about what is happening in Science at Alinjarra PS. Mr Andrew Rowe | Science Specialist

PHYSICAL EDUCATION It has been a great Semester 1 in physical education. We have been lucky enough to be visited by several Western Australian sporting teams including the Perth Scorchers, Western Force and most recently the Perth Wildcats. This term, students from Year 1-2 have been focussing on their Fundamental Movement Skills and students from Year 3-6 have been focussing on AFL Football and games that include throwing and catching. On Friday 15 June, students from Years 5 and 6 were involved in the Winter Interschool Carnival. The Winter Interschool Carnival was a fantastic opportunity for Year 5 and 6 students to be a part of a team in the sports of Netball, Soccer and AFL Football. The other schools involved were Illawarra Primary School, Ballajura Primary School and South Ballajura Primary School. All students participated with enthusiasm, confidence and sportsmanship. The final results of the carnival were Netball divisions A and B were both overall champions and undefeated in the carnival. The Soccer teams came 2nd and 3rd in their divisions and the Football team came 3rd. Congratulations to all the students who represented Alinjarra. A really great day was had by all. The students should be congratulated on their positive attitude and willingness to try their absolute best. Special thanks to the wonderful coaches, Laura Beahan, Scott Passmore and Matthew Wearing. A huge thankyou to our parent volunteer coaches, Shaun Deering and Jason Kelly. Thanks also to all of the parents and s pectators who came along on the day to support the students.

A huge thankyou to everyone who brought in Coles Sports for Schools vouchers. We managed to collect just over 36,000 vouchers which is fantastic. I have been able to order lots of new sporting equipment. The students will be able to enjoy using this equipment very soon.

Thanks for a great semester and I look forward to next term, fresh and ready for the upcoming Athletics Carnival. Have a safe and happy holiday! Nikki Ganz—Physical Education Teacher

CHARITY BIN School holidays are here – time to have a clean out and get rid of your excess clothing! Take your items to the clothing bin which is located behind the canteen. The school receives money for donated clothing and these funds then go towards the revamp & upkeep of the vegetable patch. The school recently received $87.50 for the last bin collection! Thankyou to all those who have already donated items. Please do not leave items outside of the bin. No large items can be accepted, only clothing, shoes and linen.
