  • 1. DESCRIPTION AND OPERATIONS

    A. GENERAL

    (1) This publication is issued as the basic Overhaul Manual for the “Business Class”Passenger Seat Assemblies "16NC()T()()()()ZA", manufactured for ALITALIA aircraftB767-300 by AVIOINTERIORS SpAVia Appia Km 66.4 - 04013 Latina (Italy) Phone.: +390773 6891 Fax: 00390773-631546

    (2) For the seat arrangement on aircraft see Fig. 101.(3) The seat part number refers to the complete seat and it does not specify the back and

bottom fabric cover colour.(4) For seat fabric cover colour distribution see table 2(5) For seat outlines, see fig. 102 and 103.

    B. DESCRIPTION

    (1) GENERALThe seat has been designed to have the possibility to change configuration from theupright position during take-off and landing to the flat one during the cruise flight. Thesequence of movement is managed by the software that coordinates the actuatorsmovements. Due to the relative movements of the various parts, the seat can assume different con-figurations for each position. This possibility is especially due to the movement of theseat pan, legrest and footrest. In fully upright position, it is possible to move the seat pan in up-forward and down-rearward direction, the legrest and the footbar in up and down position. The move-ments are managed so that the footrest does not hit the floor or the front seat. However, the software does not permit to move the footrest when the legrest is com-pletely raised and the seat is in full upright position. To move the seat from the reclined to the upright position a switch is available. Thisswitch is unique and recognizable to the passengers by means of small placards prin-ted on the armrest's console. During cruise, in each seat configuration the seat pan, legrest and footrest can bemoved without problem. All moving parts (e.g. footrest, legrest, seat pan etc) are designed to avoid pinchingand/or shearing effects in order to eliminate potential injury hazards. In each positionof the seat the internal structural and electric parts are protected by the fairings to avoidpotential injury hazards to the passengers and to avoid generic objects to fall into thestructure and remain stuck.

    (2) PRIMARY STRUCTURE (FIXED)Front and rear beams are made of drawn tubular constant section bars manufacturedfrom light aluminum alloy; the front beams are connected to the legs by means of

  • bolts, and the rear beams by means of bolted collars. The legs are manufactured fromsolid aluminum alloy.

    (3) PRIMARY STRUCTURE (SLIDING)A sliding structure is supported by a frame on a fixed structure and, in turn, it supportsthe backrest frame, the seat belts attachment and the seat pan frame. When actua-ted by the main motor, the sliding structure moves the attached parts (backrest andseat pan) changing the seat configuration into "flat position". The main actuator is inte-gral part of the primary structure, it is accomodated under the seat pan and is atta-ched to the front beam by means of bolted bracket. This actuator allows the move-ment of the sliding structure by means of two lateral gear wheels; the movement fromthe actuator to the wheels is transmitted by means of cinematic box and two flexiblecouplings. The retention of the sliding structure is guaranteed by means of the main actuator.

    (4) SEAT TRACK FITTINGSThe rear fitting mechanism includes three studs to sustain the vertical load and twoshear pins for the horizontal load. The front fitting consists of a single stud to sustainthe vertical load. The rear and front fittings are equipped with anti-rattle device.A track fitting cover is installed on double seats, inboard side.

    (5) FOOTWELLCavity situated in the lower aft part of the seat allows the rear seat to get to flat position. The car-pet installed inside the footwell will be provided by Alitalia.

    (6) SAFETY BELTS ATTACHMENTSEach pax seat is provided with attachments for "standard" type safety belts. The attachment is fully swivel type and it is designed so that all loads are transmit-ted to the seat track fittings. The anchor point, located on the inside face of the sli-ding structure, is the same for all seats.

    (7) SEAT BACK STRUCTUREIt is made of a light tubular aluminum frame on which an aluminum sheet is rivetedto support the seat back cushion. It is hinged on the sliding structure. When the sliding structure moves forward, a leverage rotates the backrest.

    (8) SEAT PANIt is made of a composite phenolic honeycomb connected to two lateral frames, which havetwo guides. The seat pan is connected to the sliding structure by means of two pins.

    (9) LEGRESTThe legrest is connected to the seat pan and is made of a composite plate. The legre-st setting system consists of an electric actuator.

  • (10) FOOTRESTThe front footrest is constituted by a phenolic honeycomb plate. It is fixed by meansof bolts on two machined aluminum arms that are fixed on the legrest.

    (11) LUMBAR SUPPORTA pneumatic device inflates a plastic bag.

    (12) HEADRESTIt consists of a small cushion that can be moved manually along the seat back in thevertical plane. The headrest is made of a composite sheet; it has two ear flaps madeof aluminum plate to allow major comfort for the passenger.

    (13) ARMRESTIt is made of phenolic honeycomb. Aisle armrest can be let down by means of a leverplaced forward on the control panel. The movement guarantees more comfort to thepassenger when the sliding structure is deployed.

    (14) REAR PANELIt is made of a phenolic honeycomb connected to two lateral frames. It is connectedto the sliding structure through four screws (for each seat place). It helps the slidingguides to maintain the same distance from each other. Furthermore, it avoids thatgeneric objects can fall into the structure and remain stuck.

    (15) SHELL COMPARTMENTShells are installled on the rear area of the seat, and are made of phenolic honeycomb. When the sliding structure is deploying, the shells rotate to allow the recline of the seatback.

    (16) CNT DIVIDER (PRIVACY)It is made of phenolic honeycomb. The divider can be raised whatever position theseat is (upright of flat position). To raise it, pull it upward. A gas actuator facilitates itsmovement. To let it down, push it downward.

    (17) CUSHIONS AND COVERINGSThe cushions are cold molded with self-extinguishing polyurethane foam. Coveringsare self-extinguishing fabric or leather materials. Bottom cushion is integrated with legre-st cushion, as well as cover.

    (18) CNT CONSOLE/FRONT ESCUTCHEONIt is made of thermoformed polycarbonate and leather covered. A fixed cocktail tableis top mounted. Compartment for life vest can be accessed by pulling a strap toopen the door located on the lateral sides of the console/armrest.

    E. TOLERANCE ALLOWED IN MAINTENANCE

    (1) OXIDE

Metal parts are protected during manufacture by surface treatment, however, after a prolonged use, oxidation area may appear due to environmentalagents.

    a) Ferrous parts

Areas showing oxidation marks shall be brushed with a metal brush until a homogeneous surface is obtained. Oxidation exceeding .5mm or pitting make thecomponent not suitable and it must be replaced.

    b) Aluminium alloy parts

Oxidation of any extension is allowed provided that the maximum depth of theoxidized area is less than .5mm as compared to the contiguous surface of thenon-oxidized area.

    (2) DENTS AND SCRATCHES ON METAL PARTS

Metals parts may be subject to soft local damages both during aboard operationand during installation and transport.

    a),Dents

Parts showing dents of maximum 2mm are allowed. If dents show local sharp parts blend them with surrounding unaltered metal. If blending causes removal oftreated surface an Alodine 1000 treatment shall be applied if a dent is reportedon a critical area (i.e. close to a structural attachment), the person in charge ofcontrol summons Engineering and Production Departments to ascertain thecomponent condition. The Engineering Dept. shall either issue an acceptance docu-ment (if necessary it shall be approved by RAI) or it shall reject the part and, inthis case, the component shall be replaced.

  • b) Scratches

An unlimited number of scratches are allowed provided that their depth doesnot exceed 1 mm.If a scratch causes a sharp area blend it with unaltered contiguous metal. If blending causes removal of treated surface an Alodine 1000 treatment shalbeapplied.

    (3) SEAT REAR FITTING AND LEG COUPLING

Coupling is achieved by means of a pin or screw which passes through sideholes of leg and rear fitting hole. The following clearances are allowed :

    - between pin (or screw) and leg holes: .5mm;- between pin and rear fitting hole: 1mm
