Barriers of Traditional Books

• It is hard for students who need to have the book read to them to be able to understand the content of traditional books.

• Students who have disabilities often have problem reading traditional books.

• Some students benefit from being able to interact with the text and with traditional books.

• Students cannot really interact with the text.

• The font cannot bechanged for students with visual problems.

Easier to Read

• The text can be read aloud by the computer to students who have reading disabilities.

• Having maps, charts, and other visuals makes it easier for students to be able to understand the content.

• There is a visual representation of concepts.

Media • Sometimes there are

hyperlinks within the digital books giving students the opportunity to find out more information on their own.

• Students also have the opportunity to play educational games in a fun and educational way that allows them to interact with the text at the same time.

More Engaging• Students get hands on

interaction with the digital book.

• Students can have definitions read to them by the computer or by using a text popper by scrolling over a word.

• Students can do different activities within the text to reinforce what they have just read.

• Students who need to manipulate and interact with the text will benefit more from digital books than from traditional books.

• The text can be adjusted to the individual needs of students.

• The visual formatting of the text can be changed so that the font can be larger, or the text style can be changed.

Digital Books In the Future

•Textbook publishers are moving toward putting more content online.•This will give students more opportunities to interact with digital books.•Also, with websites and programs such as SoftChalk, teachers can create their own digital books and modify it so that it can fit the individual needs of their students.
