6.1 Marmaris – Fethiye – Marmaris (7 days)

(Ekincik, Dalyan River, Amos, Lycian Tombs, Caunos, Greek temple, Roman Bath, Byzantine Church, Turtle Beach, Xanthos, Oludeniz, Telmessos, Lydia, etc…)

During Marmaris-Fethiye-Marmaris Blue Journey, we will follow the coastline south to Fethiye, a famous Turkish market town and resort located on the site of the ancient Lycian City of Termessos.

Along the way there is plenty of location to visit

- Ekincik. Here, you may rent a fisherman's boat that will take you to explore the Dalyan River

- Caunos. One of the most beautiful features of the site is the rock tombs sculpted in the form of the porticoes of small Ionic temples. These are among the most splendid examples of Lycian type funerary architecture in Turkey, although the builders were

Carians. The original occupants of the tombs are obscure but are assumed to have been Caunian noblemen and rulers; in most cases they were vacanted and reused in Roman times. The largest one is unfinished, providing a curious glimpse of the method of construction.

- You will also get a chance to see the sights of the Greek temples, Roman Baths, Byzantine church, before enjoying the scenic views overlooking the valleys of Caunos village on the way back to Turtle Beach and our Gullet.

Turtle Beach

- Telmessos (or incorrectly Telmissis) was a flourishing city west of Lycia, on the Gulf of Fethiye. It was famed for its school of diviners, consulted among others by the Lydian king Croesus, prior to declaring war against Cyrus, and by Alexander the Great, when he came to the town after the siege of Halicarnassus. Telmessos was a member of the Delian League in the 5th century BC. It was taken by Alexander in 334 BC. Telmessos was renamed Anastasiopolis in the 8th century, apparently in honor of Emperor Anastasios II, but this name did not persist. By the 10th century, it came to be called Makri, after the name of the island at the entrance to the harbor. Its ruins are located at Fethiye.

- Ölüdeniz is a small resort village in the Muğla Province on the South West coast of Turkey on the Aegean Sea to the south and the high, steep sided Babadağ Mountain, 14 km (9 mi) south of Fethiye. The town is a beach resort. Ölüdeniz remains one of the most photographed beaches on the Mediterranean. It has a secluded sandy bay at the mouth of Ölüdeniz, on a blue lagoon. The lagoon is a national nature reserve and building is strictly prohibited. Ölüdeniz is famous for its shades of turquoise and aquamarine, and is an official blue flag beach, and is frequently rated among the top 5 beaches in the world by Travelers and Tourism Journals alike. The resort is also famous for its paragliding opportunities. It is regarded as one of the best places in the world to paraglide due to its unique panoramic views, and the Babadağ Mountain's exceptional height

6.2 Marmaris – Kekova – Marmaris (14 days)

(Amos, Xanthos, Kekova, Myra, Amphitheatre, St Nicholas Church, St-Nicholas Island, Demre, Saklikent, Oludeniz, Aperlai, Arycanda, Trysa, etc…)

Xanthos: The ancient Lycian capital of Xanthos, today in the Turkish village Kinik, lies 18 km north of Patara. The theatre, Tomb of the Harpies, Nereid Monument, agora, and Inscribed Pillar, among a mixture of ruins from Lycian, Roman and Byzantine times, create a special atmosphere at this site

- Kokova is a submerged port dating back to the 5th century BC, when Lycia was an important kingdom in this region. The Lycian capital was Xanthos, an hour west of Kekova, where King Sarpedon, who fought in the Trojan Wars, originally came from. The Lycians traded with the Ancient Greeks and as trade increased, so did the incidence of piracy. For this reason, many harbors and ports were fortified as Kekova was.

Xanthos

www.derindeniz.info 15 of 32

- As you slide over the calm waters, you can see the remains of buildings and walls beneath your boat - staircases to nowhere - which feels very strange. “Derin Deniz” may stop to let you snorkel over the ruins, which were buried by a series of earthquakes over the centuries. Note that it is illegal to pick up any archaeological material and watch out for the sea urchins.

- Myra : The date of Myra's foundation is unknown. There is no literary mention of it before the 1st century BC, when it is said to be one of the six leading cities of the Lycian Union (the other five were Xanthos, Tlos, Pinara, Patara and Olympos). It is believed to date back much further however, as an outer defensive wall has been dated to the 5th

century BC. - The city is well known for its amphitheatre (the largest in Lycia) and the plethora of “rock-cut” tombs carved in the cliff above the theatre.

- Demre is the Lycian town of Myra, the home of Saint Nicholas, the original Santa Claus. The district was known as Kale until it was renamed in 2005.

Demre

www.derindeniz.info 16 of 32

- St. Nicholas Island. There are some historic writers who believe that St. Nicholas was born on this island although he did not live here. He lived and died in Demre. Watching the sunset on the island is the end to a perfect day.

- Saklikent (Hidden City) Gorge is the second-largest (20 km-long) gorge in Europe, the longest and deepest gorge in Turkey, about a 40 minutes' drive from Fethiye. It is a spectacular place, with sculpted walls soaring high above. Four km. of the gorge is walk able after April when most of the snow from the Taurus Mountains has melted and passed through the gorge on its way to the Xanthos River. Summer is the best time to visit as the canyon is deliciously cool and shady with cold water.

6.3 Marmaris – Knidos – Marmaris (7 days)

(Amos, Knidos, Loryma (Bozukkale), Datca, etc…)

- The ancient ruins of Amos can be reached from the Asarcik Hill, northwest of Kumlubük

Bay. The ancient city of Amos dates back to the Hellenistic era and now consists of an amphitheatre on the side of the hill, a temple and statue pedestals. Surrounded by ramparts dating back to the same time, this amphitheatre is in good condition, with its seating area, side walls and stage with three chambers. Excavations in 1948 by Prof. Bean revealed four inscriptions, which mentioned three rental contracts, thought to date back to around 200 BC.

- Knidos or Cnidus (pronounced /ˈnaɪdəs/) (Greek: Κνίδος [knidos]) was an ancient Greek city of Caria, part of the Dorian Hexapolis. It was built partly on the mainland and partly on the Island of Triopion or Cape Krio. The debate about it being an island or cape is caused by the fact that in ancient times it was connected to the mainland by a causeway and bridge. Today the connection is formed by a narrow sandy isthmus

- LORYMA There are very scant signs left of the ancient city of Loryma at the place called Bozukkale (‘ruined castle’) today, but the remaining massive walls and towers of the

fortress protecting the entrance to the harbor are truly impressive and worth a visit. Prof. George Bean tells us that the Athenian fleet assembled in this harbor during the peloponnesian War ca. 400 B.C.

6.4 Marmaris – Antalya – Marmaris (14 days)

(Olympos Phaseli, Aperlai, Arycanda, Trysa, Finike, etc…)

- At the foot of Mt.Tahtali (Olympos),15 km south of Kemer, the three harbors of Phaselis were once a major commercial center. The ruins of aqueducts, agoras, baths, a theater, Hadrian's Gate and an acropolis reveal the city's historical importance. From the south harbor, look up at Mt. Tahtali for a spectacular view. The sheltered sandy beaches make a superb playground, and the waters are calm and safe for swimmers.

- Olympos : is between Kemer and Adrasan. After passing

Phaselis, a plate on Antalya - Kumluca road, shows Olympos road. Cirali is an ancient coastal village beside Olympos. The city, which is found on 2nd century B. C. is emptied on 6th century. Famous Bellerophontres - Chimera war is made here. An hour of walking on a tight and uneven slope coming from a river bed after Cirali will bring you to Chimera's unique natural ambient. Chimera is known by the natives as "Yanartas" due to continuously burning natural gas, which is coming from mountain.

- Aperlai is located on the Sicak peninsula, near the Sicak jetty. A Lycian city, Aperlai's history is known from silver coins bearing its name that have been discovered and goes back to the 4th or 5th centuries BC. Aperlai was the head of the Lycian Confederation, of which Isinda, Simena and Apollonia were also members. It's very difficult to get to

the archaeological site fro m the land, it requires about 23 kilometers (14 miles) of trekking from Kas, therefore “Derin Deniz” is the most advisable to take a ride from Kas or Ucagiz (Kekova) ports.

www.derindeniz.info 19 of 32

- Finike (ancient Phoenicus) is located in the south of the Teke peninsula, and the coast here is a popular tourist destination. However, Finike is best-known for its oranges, the symbol of the town.

- Saklikent is situated near Toros, between Fethiye and Kas for thousands of years. Situated east of Esençay Valley, Saklikent has not been discovered recently. Villagers living in this region discovered Saklikent almost 20 years ago.

Saklikent Gorge ("Hidden Valley") is the longest and deepest gorge in Turkey - 18 km long and so steep and narrow that the sun does not penetrate the water, leaving it deliciously icy-cold in the summer. Once inside, water-sculpted limestone canyon walls

soar above you. Saklikent is a Canyon which is unbelievably beautiful, mystic and fascinating. You can walk one kilometer through water to reach Saklikent.

Remember to dress appropriately - you will get wet, and avoid taking big expensive waterproof cameras!

Be sure to bring submersible shoes as you will sometimes be walking in shallow water or mud. Plastic shoes can also be rented River Bar. However, after a while water goes beyond one’ s height. There start the caves. You can see the sky occasionally. You feel yourself on a different planet among high rocks. You don’t feel the Mediterranean’s distrusting heat in this Canyon.

www.derindeniz.info 20 of 32

A total of 16 caves have been discovered in the rocks, whereas prehistoric man encountered this place and used it for shelter..

There is 700m. difference in height between the entrance and the exit of Saklikent. While walking through Saklikent you generally sink deeply into wet clay. On the way you can take a quick shower under small waterfalls.

But it is impossible to reach to the end of the canyon due to the natural conditions. At the trials up to today, technical teams could reach to the end of the Canyon by the help of security belts.

- Tlos is known to have been one of the most important religious centers of the Lycian region in Antalya province of Turkey. It is known as the city where mythological hero Bellerophon and his winged flying horse Pegasus lived. Determined as the oldest city of Lycian Region by the archaeological excavations, Tlos dates back to the time before 2000 B.C. The graveyard on the natural rocks of the city acropolis was filled with most elaborate house-type tombs Of Lycia. It is known that the king-type tomb in the necropolis is dedicated to Bellerophon.

6.5 Marmaris – Bodrum – Marmaris (14 days)

(Sedir Island, Loryma (Bozukkale), Dataca, etc..)

- Sedir Island (Turkish: Sedir Adası), also known as Cleopatra Island, is an island in the Gulf of Gökova of southwestern Aegean Sea off the coast of Ula, part of Muğla Province of Turkey. It has one of the most special beaches in the world which is famous for its beach made from seashells. It is said that this organic sand was brought by ships from the Red Sea especially for Cleopatra. Each grain of sand is a perfect sphere, for this reason the beach is heavily protected by the government to prevent any sand being removed from the beach.

- Loryma : There are very scant signs left of the ancient city of Loryma at the place called Bozukkale (‘ruined castle’) today, but the remaining massive walls and towers of the fortress protecting the entrance to the harbor are truly impressive and worth a visit.

- Datça situated half way along the mountainous, pine forested peninsula is an idyllic resort. There is a lively harbour set in stunning scenery whose relaxed happy atmosphere will captivate you immediately. The entire region is a combination of traditional Turkish friendliness and hospitality, tranquility, sophistication and good fun

6.6 Bodrum – Marmaris – Bodrum (14 days) (Bodrum,St-Peter’s Castle, plus any site as suggested in some of the previous “Blue Journey”)

- Bodrum is a scenic town whose center is the famed Castle of Saint Peter (built by

the Knights of Saint John). Bodrum has much to offer and should be considered as a base to explore the surrounding countryside. In the past, Bodrum was known as Halicarnassus and the site of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. The tomb was destroyed by a series of violent earthquakes in the distant past. It is said that its building materials were used to fortify the Castle of St. Peter and the city's defensive walls.

- About 9 miles east of Bodrum is Orak Island an islet of bare rock and thorny shrubs that seem to float in the clear morning light. Cokertme is another wonderful place to stop, a charming fishing hamlet.

Cokertme

6.7 Bodrum – Gokova – Bodrum (7 days) (Cleopatra Island, Gokova, etc…)

- The godly beauties of GOKOVA have been attracting people for thousands of years. Even its name is derived from the beautiful forests, The ancient name for GOKOVA is IDYMA. The name “IDYMA” has developed form the “luwishe” “ida(a)uma” and means “forest people”.

Gokova Bay with its 6 months continuous wind and open space is naturally very suitable for kite surfing and has become one of the most attractive locations for beginners as well as having made a memorable impression on professional kite boarders. The fantastic bay located hidden amongst the high mountains gives a riding opportunity to all levels of riders due to its increasing onshore daily summer breeze throughout the day time.

11. What to take with you?

Nothing can be easier than packing for a sailing vacation. There will be lots of sun, lots of sea, and you will be living on a boat. For clothing take your bathing suits, shorts, t-shirts, and extra sweater, a pair of cotton trousers in case of cool nights and light bad-weather gear for the occasional rainy days. On shore, with plenty of sun and sea, life on the islands is very casual and you really need very little. You may encounter some finer class resorts and restaurants that require dress trousers and jackets for men and dresses for women. Do not forget sunglasses, a hat or a headscarf and make sure you have a high-protection sun cream. The constant wind on board keep the temperature comfortable, but the combined effect of sun and reflection from sails and water can cause severe sunburns. Rubber-sole shoes for a firm grip on slippery decks are always recommended to prevent foot injury. But on Derin Deniz you can really stay barefoot. Some outdoor-activities require specific material which can not always be rented. You will want to remember your holiday and be able to share it with others. Bring along your camera.
