THE HISTORY OF HOOKAS

a. The hooka was first created to elevate peoples’ states of mind.

b. Although born in India this device spread to the countries of the Near East, Far East, Arabs, Persia, East Africa and all the way to Ottoman empire.

c. The hooka has been changed by people from different regions of world said above in shapes, configuration and names even.

d. The pioneers of concept which we are going to discuss are basically from Ottoman Empire.

NAMES AND CONFIGURATIONS

Page 6: All about Hookas

• In the original form hooka was very simple assembly consisting of coconut shall as base – the assembly was known as narci, coconut shell was hollowed, and a straw was placed inside it for the purposes of inhaling substances placed in the shell’s core.

• After some years the device reached Egypt, and the Egyptians changed its form further by replacing the coconut shell with a gourd.

• Upon reaching the Persian peninsula, the Persians developed the hooka even further, thus bringing it closer to its modern form. They substituted the straw originally used by the Indians, with a soft and more flexible hose, and it was this discovery that made the hooka more practical. 6

Page 7: All about Hookas

• These changes came in time with the region’s first introduction to Tobacco. Seeing the newly discovered substance in a whole new light due to the more relaxing effects it provides, the Persians experimented with the possibility of inhaling it using the Hooka.

• With this idea in mind, it was soon discovered that the hooka device needed to evolve from its original form so as to satisfy this purpose.

• A bronze tray, known at the time by the name of ser was placed above the hooka’s body to hold the tobacco.

• The type of Tobacco popular amongst the Persians at the time was known as tömbeki.

• In Syria and Yemen, the Hooka was developed even further so that it took on the form of a long wooden head, an iron stand and a hose sewn from thick cloth.

• During the 17th century, the Ottomans changed the hooka into a more practical smoking device. Above the "head" they placed a bowl of baked clay and they also added to it a mouthpiece that connected the hose to the smoker’s mouth.

• The Hooka at the time had a body of glass, crystal, rock-crystal, porcelain and even silver, a head of brass and silver, and a pipe holder decorated with carvings depicting scenes from nature.

• The popularity of hooka led to the shining era in glass industry and in the 19th Century man by the name of Mehmet Dede set up a workshop in Beykoz, a place where the famous Beykoz glassware was made. After setting up a series of workshops in that area, a glass factory was soon established in 1899. The local factory however was unable to compete with the glassware imported from Europe at the time and it soon closed down.

8

NAMES AND CONFIGURATIONS

Page 9: All about Hookas

• The first glass factory in the modern sense was established upon the orders of Atatürk in 1934 during the Republic period, and it was then that the prettiest hookas in history were made.

• Today the hooka may be described as a device that permits the smoking of a type of tobacco known as tömbeki. This tobacco is inhaled by means of eliminating excess nicotine through the passing of smoke through water, and it is from this mechanism that the hooka gets its reputation for being the purer form of smoking.

• Tömbeki is the name given to a pension form of tobacco only used for smoking hookas.

9

NAMES AND CONFIGURATIONS

Page 10: All about Hookas

• The device consists of several sections; including the pipe, the head, the body, the hose, and the mouthpiece.

• Meanwhile many people tried to copy and improve the assembly invented by Ottomans but all of them failed and the configuration which they shaped has been very popular today.

• Today this head is often made of glass, china ceramics, porcelain, rock-crystal, or metal. The hooka bottle is usually filled with water, and there is a thin hose descending from the pipe and into it. The hose is easy to move and it is attached to the protrusion on the upper portion of the head connected to the body. This structure serves to conduct the smoke cleansed in the hookas bottle to the mouth.

– The commonness of the Indian word "hookah" in English is a result of the British Ruling , the British dominion of India (1858-1947), when large numbers of expatriate Britons first sampled the water-pipe.
