Most people are aware that adequate Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones. There have been a lot of high profile media reports lately including Gwyneth Paltrow’s case in which the actress broke her lower leg unexpectedly and went on to discover that her bone density was diminished (osteopenia) possibly due to a severe deficiency of Vitamin D.What are the sources of Vitamin D?The human body produces its own Vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight. The majority of our Vitamin D is produced in this way. Foods such as fish, eggs, milk, cheese, and cod liver oil are also a good source of Vitamin D.What else does Vitamin D do?Lack of Vitamin D has now been implicated in many illnesses other than bone thinning. These include diabetes, cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and heart attack, and some cancers

including bowel cancer. The babies of women who are deficient in Vitamin D are also thought to be at greater risk of developing multiple sclerosis in later life. Amazingly, over 50% of Britons are thought to have inadequate levels of Vitamin D. In the UK there is no government policy to fortify foods with Vitamin D as there is in many other countries. The lack of sunlight hours in the northern latitudes could account for the poor health statistics in Scotland compared to the south of England. (And you thought it was the deep-fried Mars Bars!)

What should I do?The obvious problem with being out in the sun is the risk of skin cancer. How-

ever it may be the case that a regular exposure of the skin of the arms and face without sun screen for up to 1 hour a day may in fact do more good than harm. A good quality Vitamin D supplement may also help especially in the winter months.
