In 1969 the internet was started by the U.S Department of Defense, because they wanted a communication system that would not be destroyed in case there was an emergency. As a result they decided to link computers over telephone lines so if one computer failed to work the others would still be able to communicate with each other. Not just a pretty screen. As the system began to grow other uses were soon discovered for the internet, such as sending messages and files between computers.
