All About Dogs

Listen, You! Dear voters, all come hear my plea! (All dog lovers speak with me!) Don't lock dogs up. (Poor little pups!) They've got a right to be free.

Some dogs might have cause to bite, But most are kind, unselfish pooches, Who give you lots of extra smooches.

Oh! Please, dear voters, hear my plea! Let the dogs be free!

Dear Mr. Human You're really so wrong. What would you do If our freedom was gone? We help the blind people And chase burglars away, And warn our dear masters If something'~ astray. You say we're destructive Yes, some of us are. But how about your children, They're much worse by far. Boy, Mr. Human, You think you're so great, What about all the wars And man's destructive mistakes? You talk about Lady Bird

About Tomatoes Many factors can be responsi

ble for rots or blemishes on tomato fruits. Some are due to dis- '1

ease pathogens or living organisms, others may be caused by low temperatures, poor fertility, drought, etc. Rots that are soft or have fuzzy growths in them are due to fungi and are most likely anthracnose or early blight and can be reduced con-

siderably by spraying with a fungicide such as maneb. Sprays should begin as soon as the fruits form and be continued every 7 days. however. even a late start· will be helpful. Tomatoes grown on new ground generally have fewer rots than those planted where the crop has been grown for several years.

Drought early in the season often brings on blossom-end rot, a dry black rot of early-

set fruits. Cells in the blossomJ

end of the fruits fail to get enough water and calcium salts. These cells die and produce the typical sunken black areas. Irrigation is often needed as a pJ;"eventative_ The use of mulches also helps to reduce this problem.

You may not recall it now, but we had cold nights in June. These cold temperatures were the cause of poor early fruit set.
