Built in 2003, the Stanford University Rowing and Sailing Center is widely regarded as one of the best facilities of its kind in the nation.

Located in the Port of Redwood City, the Dean Morrison Boathouse is a two story complex with five boat bays, locker rooms, conference room, banquet hall, laundry room, kitchen area and more than 16,000 square feet of space.

As the epicenter of the rowing and sailing teams, the Rowing and Sailing Center plays host to five Stanford varsity sports along with sum-mer camps, physical education sailing students and high school teams throughout the Bay Area.

Stanford sailing uses the Carl and Shirley Schoof Sailing Docks as its own launch ramp and floating docks. These provide access to Redwood Creek for Stanford’s fleet of 18 FJs and 12 420s. In addition, Stanford owns four Lasers/Laser Radials, five coach boats and various other boats acquired through the generous support of the keelboat donation program. In 2009, the team was able to purchase an additional three 420s and is able to conduct a full practice with a dozen boats in the water.

The Redwood Creek turning basin adjacent to the sailing facilities pro-vides a flat-water venue due to the protection of Bair Island, a part of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge located to the northeast. The cold temperatures of the ocean water and the hot tempera-tures of the California mainland provide a consistent thermal sea breeze in the spring and summer. A sail out to the southern San Francisco Bay brings big currents, big wind and choppy waves that prove to be some of the most fun practices in the spring.

Neighbors of the Rowing and Sailing Center include the Pacific Youth Sailing Foundation, the Marine Science Institute, Sequoia Yacht Club and the Seaport Centre, one of the largest biotechnology research complexes in the Bay Area.

In the rapid development of the region, Stanford sailing’s foundation is secure.
