Journeys
Inside this issue:
September 2016 Volume 15, Issue 9
is a monthly publication of St. Paul Lutheran Church
All Are Welcome Let us build a house where all are
named, their songs and visions heard
and loved and treasured, taught and
claimed as words within the Word.
Built of tears and cries and laughter,
prayers of faith and songs of grace,
let this house proclaim
from floor to rafter:
All are welcome, all are welcome,
all are welcome in this place.
VS 5, All Are Welcome , ELW 641
Marty Haugen
The words above
come from a fun hymn
to sing. What I particu-
larly love about the
fifth verse is the line,
“…their songs and vi-
sions heard and loved
and treasured, taught
and claimed as words
within the Word.” This
line speaks to the con-
nectedness we have to
Christ. You know the
words we read in scrip-
ture, particularly in the
first chapter of John’s
Gospel:
“In the beginning was the Word, and
the Word was with God, and the Word was
God. All things came into being through
him, and without him not one thing came
into being. What has come into being in
him was life, and the life was the light of all
people. The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness did not overcome it. …
And the Word became flesh and lived
among us, and we have seen his glory, the
glory as of the father’s only son, full of
grace and truth.” John 1:1-5,14 NRSV
The hymn itself dreams of a time
that all people can, in essence, gather in
one place, with different gifts, with
different ideas, with different under-
standings, yet one in Christ and with-
out fear and danger. 2016 has shown
that we have a long way to go. Nation-
al and world violence
plays out on our TV’s in
what seems to be a daily
mantra. Our political
speech seems to grow
nastier by the day, and I
am not just talking about
the politicians them-
selves. I only have to go
to Facebook feed and
my head drops in grave
disappointment.
In the midst of it all, a
question emerges for me
and the Church. What
does it mean that “All
Are Welcome?” I know we are far from
the ideal that we sing in the hymn.
Does that justify me to exclude and
separate? Even because I may be filled
with fear and the possibility of danger?

What about my moorings? How do my
long term beliefs and the teachings/
learnings in my particular environ-
ments influence who I am today?
I would like to invite us as a faith
community to have conversation on
just what this means and what might
this look like. How do you understand
what it means that “all are welcome?”
What will we do together when we
agree or disagree? We will have these
conversations on a few occasion over
the coming months.
Blessings ….. See you in Church!
PASTOR TOM (Continued from page 1)
On or around September 11 each
year, ELCA churches across the coun-
try participate in what is called Serve
Day. We put on bright yellow tee-shirts
that say “God’s work, our hands”, and
we engage in community service pro-
jects for the love and benefit of our
neighbors. We reframe the 9/11 date
and make it now a beautiful testament
of compassionate people engaging
with the world that God loves. We
would love for all people of St. Paul,
Shepherd of the Hills, and the Thai
worshiping community to participate.
If you are able, please sign up if you
are able for one of the three projects we
will undertake on September 11 from
12-2 p.m. We will gather at St. Paul and
Shepherd at noon to pray, and then
carpool from there to these locations:
LA HABRA FAMILY RESOURCE
CENTER - They offer counseling, do-
mestic violence services, legal aid, par-
enting education
classes, community
garden, and many
more resources to
the La Habra com-
munity. Volun-
teers can help or-
ganize the center.
They have a lot of cabinets, storage
closets and two storage areas (a room
and a shed) that need some tender lov-
ing care. (Maximum of 20 volunteers
for this project.)
JOYA SCHOLARS - This tutoring
facility is located in the Garnet neigh-
borhood of Fullerton, and provides ed-
ucational support to older teens and
their families. Pearl Park is located di-
rectly behind the house they rent for
tutoring and needs clean-up. A dump-
ster has been ordered and volunteers
can go there with rakes and gloves to
pick up trash. This will help beautify
the park for students and their families.
SHEPHERD CENTER - This pre-
school is a missional extension of Shep-
herd of the Hills Lutheran Church, our
second campus in Whittier. They need
their stairs and classroom doors paint-
ed and some stucco replaced on one of
their walls.

Let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by
the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,* whom you
crucified, whom God raised from the dead.
Influenza: The Nuts and Bolts of the FLU Summer will soon be over and a
respite from the hot temperatures we
have been having. But with the change,
also comes colds, and flu. Although it’s
not possible to predict what this flu sea-
son will be like, the timing, severity,
and length of the season varies from
year to year. The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention recently sent
out a directive regarding the flu vac-
cination.
Note: On June 22, 2016, CDC’s Ad-
visory Committee on Immunization
Practices (ACIP) recommended a
change to U.S. influenza vaccination
policy for 2016-2017, www.cdc.gove/
media/releases/2016/s0622-laiv-
flu.html). The ACIP recommendation
must be reviewed and approved by
CDC’s Director, and the final recom-
mendation will be published in a CDC
Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Re-
port (MMWR), in late summer or early
fall. The content of this website will be
reviewed and updated prior to the 2016
-2017 influenza season.
There are 3 types of Influenza: A,
B, C. Types A and B cause seasonal in-
fluenza epidemics. Type A (H3N2)
affects people of all ages. Type B affects
people of all ages, but is a particular
concern because of its significant im-
pact on children. Type C generally re-
sults in few or mild symptoms.
Influenza complications predis-
pose people with preexisting conditions
and young children. Serious complica-
tions include pneumonia, inflammation
of the heart, increased risk for stroke
and heart attack. The flu may also
worsen chronic conditions such as asth-
ma, COPD, Heart Failure, Diabetes,
and Kidney Disease.
Some common myths about the
Flu shot:
Myth #1: “You can get the flu from
the Flu shot”. The flu shot is made
from small pieces of killed flu virus-
es, so it can’t cause the flu. Some
people may experience flu-like or
cold-like symptoms following the
flu shot because they were exposed
to the flu prior to receiving the shot.
It may be an immune response to
the shot which triggers symptoms
similar to the disease. It takes ap-
proximately 2 weeks to create a pro-
tective immune response.
Myth #2: “I felt worse after the Flu
shot.” Some people may experience
flu-like symptoms because they
were exposed to the flu prior to the
flu shot and an immune response to
the shot triggers symptoms similar
to the disease.
Some common side effects after a
Flu shot: Pain, Redness and swelling at
the site of the injection, headache, mus-
cle aches, fatigue, fever.
Contraindications to a Flu shot:
Individuals with severe hypersensitivi-
ty to eggs, those with a previous vac-
cine associate allergic reaction, those
who have developed Guillain-Barre
Syndrome (severe muscle weakness)
within six weeks of a previous flu shot
should avoid immunization.
To protect oneself from flu this sea-
son, CDC recommends a yearly flu vac-
cine for everyone 6 months of age and
older as the first and most important
step in protecting against this serious
disease.

St. Paul’s Health Ministries and WELCA invite you to hear Pat McKinley give
his program on :
She Bear—Empowerment and Safety for Women
I encourage all my St Paul friends to attend
my class sponsored by the health ministry which I
have entitled ʺShe Bearʺ women of all ages will bene-
fit from the lecture.
This class is unique. It is not a self defense class in
the classic sense. It is geared to the psychological as-
pects of self protection in all situations from physical
attack to reaction to mass shootings or terrorist
attack. Awareness and immediate action are the keys to survival. Whether
you are a trained athlete or someone confined to a wheel chair, all will
benefit from the lecture. By merely listening your chances of avoiding
physical attack or surviving mass casualty situations will increase by over
80 percent.
I have been encouraged by feed back from women who have attended
my lectures that they survived or recognized and avoided dangerous situ-
ations because of what they learned.
Men are welcomed and encouraged to attend, the class is geared for
women but many of the points in the lecture benefit everyone

WELCA UPDATE
St. Paul took the pasta challenge in
July. We collected 249 packages to
Fullerton Methodist’s 182 packages for
a total of 431 packages of pasta. The
winners were the people from Path-
ways of Hope and the La Habra Re-
source Care Center who were the recipi-
ents of the pasta. It’s cereal in Septem-
ber. October challenge is peanut butter.
I’m a Lutheran – this article is from Liv-
ing Lutheran by Rick Steves, Trinity Lu-
theran Church, Lynnwood, WA.
I found my faith in my upbringing
and in my need to not be alone.
My first experience with church was
probably in the cry room during a
long sermon.
On a pilgrimage through Martin Lu-
ther’s land, I appreciated what a
blessing it is to have the freedom to
explore the word of God in my own
language and how hard-earned that
privilege was.
I believe God loves his creation very
much and loves each of us as his
child.
Faithful travel is packing light but
bringing Jesus along.
I pray few requests and lots of
thanks. Life is so good, especially
when we get out and explore.
I practice my faith on the road by
knowing Jesus is with me and cele-
brating (or at least striving to cele-
brate) God’s creation every step of
the way.
My faith is challenged when I’m
among people I respect who have
no faith.
People are surprised when I get all
excited about Martin Luther.
Interacting with different cultures
has affected my faith by reminding
me that this world is filled with bil-
lions of equally precious children of
God. WELCA EVENTS Below are some of the opportunities

50/50—As a part of
our year-long cele-
bration, St. Paul LC
is announcing a 50
for 50 campaign.
This 50 for 50 cam-
paign will target a couple of needed
projects around our campus and pro-
vide benevolence dollars that support
the mission we are committed to.
Funds will be collected over the next 12
months (through February 2017). We
have set a goal of $50,000 in honor of 50
years of ministry. Funds will be used
for: Upgrading our AV System in Wor-
ship; Addressing the leaky and hot
glass in PS office; Parking lot coating/
striping; 10% of all funds received will
support ELCA Mission Support. Addi-
tional projects as funds are available.
50/50 envelopes are available in the
narthex or just note on your check
“50/50” on the memo line.
WINDOW BOOK- For our
50th anniversary celebra-
tion, books about our sanc-
tuary windows are now
available. A donation of $20
is suggested. All proceeds will go to a
seminary scholarship fund.
Thank you to all the window do-
nors for the many years of beauty and
faith brought to St. Paul through the
windows.
READERS NEEDED—If you are inter-
ested in being a reader for worship,
please see Monica Farias or email her
at [email protected]? We especially
need volunteers for the 11 a.m. service.
VBS THANKS—Thank you to all
who donated during VBS toward
Lutheran Disaster Response in their
efforts to aid Ecuador. Following
their severe earthquakes, the Ecua-
doran people have been in desper-
ate need of clean drinking water, as
their once reliable river has now be-
come contaminated. During our
two Vacation Bible School weeks,
we collected a total of $452.70. One
penny purchases one purification
tablet, which purifies one gallon of
water. With $452.70, your generosi-
ty was able to provide 45,270 gal-
lons of drinkable water! Many
thanks!
THANK YOU all so much for your
support through the St. Paul Semi-
nary Scholarship Fund. My classes
at Pacific Lutheran Theological
Seminary in Berkeley begin the day
after Labor Day, and you have
made my time in seminary much
easier. The Congregational Partners
in Education Award through Cali-
fornia Lutheran University (which
merged with PLTS a few years ago)
matches up to $2,500 in congrega-
tional support. You have surpassed
that amount, which means I will re-
ceive the full $5,000, and the sur-
plus will go towards next year’s re-
newable matching award. Thank
you so much for your support, and
thank you especially for your kind
words and prayers. I am really ex-
cited to see where God leads, and
you are a huge part of this journey.
Thank you! /s/ Jennifer Matas

We welcome and encourage all prayer requests. Please
submit your requests in writing on your Worship
Registration card, via email or phone call to the Church
Office. Once or twice each month, names will be removed
from the list who have been in print at least 3 consecutive
weeks (except those deployed overseas). You are welcome to
re-submit any name removed from the list, or you may
remove a name at anytime by contacting the Church Office.
Thank you! If you or someone you know is in the hospital,
please be sure to call the church office (714) 879-8290 to
inform us. Confidentiality laws now prevent hospitals from
contacting churches when congregation members are
hospitalized.
