What a great first week of school! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to visit with each of you during our parent training. For your reference, the Powerpoint that was shared with you will be available on our All City PTO website. If you have family members or friends doing commitment time, this may be a good thing for them to view, along with the pick-up and drop-off videos used in the presentation.

One area that we did not have time to address was SAFETY in the school. You all know that you cannot get past our front foyer without ringing our doorbell. We may ask you to identify yourself, so be prepared to say who you are and the reason for your visit (commitment, lunch, etc.). Once in the front office, you will now notice that the door to the hallway and the door leading to the health office and workroom are both closed. Once again, this is a new safety measure. are looking for construction paper, please feel free to go through the doors. Again, they are not locked; just closed.

During this first month of school, students will be practicing a number of safety drills. These drills are not meant to frighten students, but rather to help students feel confident by knowing what to do in the event of an emergency. This, in turn, will help them feel safe. Below is a list of the drills we will be practicing: ●Fire Drill (We already had one this past week!) - Students evacuate to a location outside of the building. ●Tornado Drill - Students move to a solid inside wall away from windows. Facing the wall, they kneel down on the floor and cover their head. ●Lockdown Drill - Students move quietly to an area of the room away from windows so they cannot be seen. The teacher locks the door and keeps them quiet. ●Evacuation Drill - Students evacuate to a location off of our campus. Our designated site is Central Services on 1101 N. Western Ave. Our second designated site is the fire station on the corner of Kiwanis and Madison.

If you are in our building during a drill, you are expected to following the direction of the teacher and do whatever students are asked to do. Your main role is to stay calm in an effort to help students stay calm. Each staff member knows their specific role. Following their lead will be important for the safety of all parents and students.

Weekly Teacher Communication

Mrs. Sheila Pike, Kindergarten: [email protected]

● We made it through the first week of Kindergarten! We have been working on class rules and school rules. We are all learning to work and play together in a new setting with new expectations.

● Please remember to send back the snack sack filled for the week...and please remember no tree nuts or peanut based items of any kind due to severe allergies. THANK YOU!

● We have PE on Monday and Thursday so please make sure kids are wearing sneakers on that day.● We have library on Wednesdays. Starting this week the students will check out books to bring

home. Please make sure the book gets returned by The following Tuesday.● I am looking forward to seeing all of you next week. Please let your little one know that

you are there to help where needed and not just for her/him. It can be hard for a few weeks so please give a hug and a kiss and scoot him/her back to the group.

● Have a great week and thanks for all you do!

Mrs. Heidi Williams, First Grade: [email protected]

● We made it through the 1st week of 1st grade!! I notice a lot of the other teachers mentioning that, so maybe it was us making it just as much as the kids:) I am so excited for this year. I can really get a good idea of what the year is going to be like in the first few days, and it is going to be a GREAT year. What a fun group of kids.

● We have a class Owl named Ozzie who sits upfront and watches the kids and picks at least 1, sometimes more if they deserve it, student a day to be in our Ozzie morning message letter. A student is chosen by their behavior and how hard they work for the day! The ‘winner’ for the day gets to pick out a special treat and have their name in the letter. Weekly Ozzie Winners for week 1: Anna, Sam, Emmerson, and Annie. Ozzie did mention to me though that it was almost impossible to pick just 1 each day!

● Please remember no tree nuts or peanut based items of any kind due to severe allergies. THANK YOU! Also, no chips, candy, etc. If I see either of those things, they will not be allowed to have their snack for that day.

● Our daily BLUE folders will start coming home next week. Chelsie will go over that more during Parent Training, but incase you are later in the week, make sure it is returned every day. They will also bring home a TEAL folder on Monday that needs to be sent back with their blue folder on Tuesday.

● We worked really hard this week on class rules, school rules, working quietly, walking quietly in the hallways, and being a good friend. Please continue to enforce that when you are back next week!

Mrs. Tanya Rausis, Second Grade: [email protected]

What a pleasure it has been getting to know your students the past few days.  They have so much energy it's contagious! It's hard right now to get get an accurate view on an entire week, but here is my attempt :)

Math: We got started last week right away!  Here are some routines that may be new to keep an eye out for:-Students must follow their menu.  They should check off the page when they complete it, and then verify (look at) every page and check off the verify box once the page has a star or OK on it.  We are starting a lot faster this year than last with our updated curriculum.  Students will be working within 100 and starting on time to the hour on an analog clock.Practice math at your student's level with dreambox:https://play.dreambox.com/login/bywk/allce the user name is their student ID numberthe password is ace2 (no space)the ipad code is bywk/allce

Reading We will be working on being able to make good reading choices, and extending our ability to read independently.  I will be assessing DRA's.

Science/Social Studies We'll see if we get a start on science this week, right now we are learning routines and it is taking a lot more time to complete math and reading tasks as well as transition tasks. If we do we will be learning about earth processes such as earthquakes and volcanoes in science and about wants and needs in social studies.

After last week I am amble to even more thoroughly appreciate all that each of you do in my classroom!  Your presence is so valuable... your child, every other child in our classroom, and I appreciate you!

● Week one down! What a great week we had! We spent a lot of time perfecting our drills and setting up our classroom norms. I was very impressed with the class. We worked on improving our talking and everyday we got better.

● Reading logs will be coming home on Monday. I apologize as I was going to send them home today. Your child needs to spend 30 minutes each night and a quick reflection of what they read.

● Just a reminder….all snacks that are sent should be peanut and tree nut free.● 4th Grade will share their Me Bags on Wednesday for Family Time.● On Friday the 5th graders will be training the 4th graders for Safety Patrol so they may begin

rotation as soon as next week. I will keep you posted.● Watch for your child’s assignment notebook. It will be coming home nightly.● We had a great time at bowling. Thank you to the parents who stopped in to see us and also to

those who came to help.

● We made it! The first week is over and now we’re ready to hit the ground running! The kids have been working on procedures this week and learning the ins and outs of 5th grade!

● 5th Grade Me bags will be presented in family on Tuesday. It’s always helpful to have them practice their presentation a couple of time with someone.

● Reading logs came home with students on Friday. 100 minutes are required a week with a parent signature on Fridays!

● I just heard back from the Outdoor Challenge Guy….and he’s looking to get staffing for one of the days I gave him. As soon as I hear that day, I will pass it on to you as well! I know we’re all eagerly anticipating flying high through the sky that day!!

● Just a reminder….all snacks that are sent should be peanut and tree nut free. Also, no chips, candy or cookies. I will smuggle them into a deep drawer of my desk for later consumption. =0)

● If your child is interested in band, please send the permission form back in with Monday folders (on Tuesday!)

● On Friday the 5th graders will be training the 4th graders for Safety Patrol so hopefully we can get them into the rotation starting next week!

● We have a Memory Wall near the parent table where you are able to bring in pictures of our class doing school activities. Help us fill it up! There are horizontal and vertical slots available.

Art Club is back at All City! Art Club exists to encourage and connect creativity in children through art and craft projects. We will be creating and sharing art over the course of the school year. It is my greatest hope that the members of Art Club will learn to use their own ideas and creativity—and use the sample projects or instruction as simply a guide, not the rule. There is so much to create and do…here are the details to get started:

Art Club will be split into two groups again this year so that more children can have the opportunity to join. However, new this year, both groups will be a mix of K–5th grade. The groups will meet every other Wednesday from 1:15–2:15 in the ACE Art Room. There is a limited number of spots available and a waiting list will be started if needed.

TO SIGN UP, you must email the name and grade of your child to [email protected] Sign up will be based on the order in which your email was received. (Last year, Art Club filled up in less than a day so please let me know right away if you are planning to join.) **NOTE: If you have more than one child that would like to join, or if you are car pooling with another family who wants to join Art Club, please let me know in the email. My hope is to coordinate and have car pools/family members in the same group.

There will be a $20 membership fee to cover project supplies and materials as we need them. This fee will be due before the first Art Club meeting.

Art Club will begin Wednesday, September 28th. A more detailed schedule will be available once groups are determined.

If you are interested in volunteering at Art Club, your time is much appreciated and we’d love to have you join us. (If we have more volunteers, we’ll be able to open up more spots for Art Club Members.)

Once your child is signed up, you will receive a form in your child’s Monday folder to fill out and return to me with your $20 fee before Art Club begins. If you have any questions, email me at [email protected]

Thank you for your excitement and support for the arts. Looking forward to an awesome year!

Health 101: Important! Keep Your Children Healthy

NOTICE: The State Department of Health is no longer providing free flu vaccine to schools, which means the Sioux Falls School District will not be holding flu shot clinics in the middle and high schools this year. Families should contact their health care provider for the flu vaccine.Seasonal colds, flu and other respiratory illnesses are unwelcome interruptions to our lives. Encourage your child to practice the following prevention tips:

-Avoid close contact with those who are sick. Don’t share food/drinks.-Cover coughs and sneezes. Help keep germs from circulating-cover your nose with a tissue when sneezing and dispose tissues properly. When coughing, cover your mouth with your arm, not your hand.-Wash your hands periodically with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizer when you’re not near a sink. -Avoid touching your face. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.-Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, drink plenty of fluids, manage stress and eat nutritious foods.-Get a flu vaccine!  DeeAnn Konrad, APRCommunity Relations SupervisorSioux Falls School District201 E. 38th St.Sioux Falls, SD  [email protected]: 605-367-7951

Learning Never Stops

By Dr. Brian Maher, Superintendent

Welcome back to what I’m certain will be another exciting year in the Sioux Falls School District! By now, I hope you and your student(s) have developed a routine that includes a healthy breakfast, a priority on school attendance, nightly reading and just the right amount of rest.

It’s been said that play is a child’s work. This summer, I’m pleased to say we introduced a good balance of both in a new program called Summer Climb. The focus of the 8-week Summer Climb experience is to increase reading and math scores among students who struggle. A small group of children in Kindergarten through third grade in three schools – nearly 200 students - were given the opportunity to spend their summer learning.

And, learning they did! Summer Climb students at Hawthorne, Hayward and Laura B. Anderson Elementary Schools built and launched rockets to sharpen their science and math skills. They wrote stories and attended play performances in the park. They went on field trips and experienced nature, first-hand.

Some of the District’s top teachers guided their learning and created an unforgettable summer in an effort to boost student achievement. We’ll be tracking Summer Climb students throughout the year to see if the extra classroom time had a positive impact. And, as soon as we have results from our youngest learners, we’ll be sure to share the news.

Summer break rarely means quiet halls in the high schools. Between sports practices, marching band rehearsals, Driver’s Education and other community events, there is plenty to squeeze in to the months of June, July and August. In addition to these extracurricular activities, I’m pleased to tell you about how our more veteran students focused on academics through the summer, as well.

High school students who were close to completing their coursework on the last day of school, but just needed a little extra time, found that opportunity at each of our high schools this year. Teachers stayed overtime to guide students toward completing assignments and taking tests to keep them on pace for graduation. More than 450 motivated students spent part of their summer taking courses to get ahead on credits. It is admirable that so many students value their education over their vacation.

As you can see, the Sioux Falls School District is serious about this business of educating students. We’ve adjusted what you might consider to be the traditional school year to meet the needs of today’s learners. We are excited to see how these efforts benefits students – and in turn, benefit our community - in the months and years to come.
