Why Windows 7? Why Now?
3
• Support– Microsoft dropped full support for Windows XP in 2009 and on April 8, 2014, security updates will no
longer be provided. – Windows 7 has better device recognition. It comes preinstalled with a large set of drivers and can
automatically search for new ones via Windows Update. – Windows 7 will allow better support and quicker response time from the Service Desk and Desk-side
Services Group with a more standardized Windows 7 environment.– Reference – Other labs are pursuing W7 roll out for these reason - Argonne (4 standard models),
Sandia (30 standard models)…..Fermilab has over 290 models/configurations under support.
• Usability– Connect to networks easier. View and connect to available networks in as a few as three clicks.– The new taskbar organizes windows better and allows a user to change applications with ease. This
includes faster access to programs and files when using the pin and jump lists. Applications are now launched and managed from the toolbar. All open windows for an application will be grouped together under a single icon. A user can simply hover over this icon to get a thumbnail sized live look-in to each window, a feature known as “Aero Peek.”
– Internet Explorer 8 provides faster and easier web browsing.– Windows Search provides a comprehensive search of a specific file, program, or e-mail in a matter of
seconds.
• DOE Mandates for Security and Energy Settings– Windows 7 provides mechanisms to allow us to meet the energy-conservation requirements set by
the DOE.– Windows 7 provides more security features than Windows XP. This will help us meet current and
future DOE requirements.W7 AEM Presentation

• Step 1. ID eligible “Phase I” Computers:
Hardware - Is their hardware is capable of running Windows 7 (1.5 GHz CPU, 2 GB RAM)?
Software - Is their software is capable of running Windows 7 (as tested Win7 Project Team)?
Approved - Does Div/Sec Head (or designee) determine the computer can be migrated?
Exemptions – DAQ Systems, Online Systems, 64 Bit Systems.
• Step 2. Communication
T-7 days: a flyer will be mailed to every user in that Div/Sec describing the entire migration process
T-3 days: email will be sent out to further describing the migration process
Upon Initiation: During the migration, a tent card will be dropped off at the user’s desk letting them
know their system is being migrated
Post migration: handouts for Office 2010 and Windows 7 will be left at the desk to help transition user
to the Windows 7 and Office 2010.

Almost the entire migration process is automated and done off hours…
Night Before Migration – User files and settings backed up and separate hard drive backup
performed
Day of Migration – User files and settings backup verification and last minute system fixes
before migration
Night of Migration – Final incremental backup, system wiped, Windows 7 installed, user
files and settings restored, and ready for Migration Tech.
Morning after Migration – Migration Tech arrives at 7:00 am to begin installing
applications and configuring systems. Any issues from the migration will be handled at
that time.
Pending issues – operational target for migrated systems is four hours.
What to expect…when they come for you
