FAMILY ENGAGEMENT “All families have important experiences, skills, and bodies of knowledge—’funds of knowledge’. These funds are essential to the ways the families function in the home as well as in work and community settings. They are also resources for their children that the teacher can tap into.” JoBeth Allen, Creating Welcoming Schools, p. 47.

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT

“All families have important experiences, skills, and bodies of knowledge—’funds of knowledge’. These funds are essential to the ways the families function in the home as well as in work and community settings. They are also resources for their children that the teacher can tap into.”

JoBeth Allen, Creating Welcoming Schools, p. 47.

Family Engagement in F-104

Phone calls and parent/guardian conferences

Invitation to Open House

Home Interview assignments

Awareness of non-English speakers…“…if parents are not

familiar with school terms or cannot read the assignment in English, they may have trouble helping children with homework—something schools often see as indicators of families valuing education.”

JoBeth Allen, Creating

Welcoming Schools, p. 104.

Translating phone conferences and notices sent to parents and guardians are extremely helpful for non-English speaking parents and guardians.

SATURDAY SCHOOL March 19, 2012

Dear Biology Parent:

This letter is to give you information about several events that we have coming up for our students! We hope you can take the time to read this letter and come participate in some of the activities with us!

First, we are holding a Saturday school for the students in order to make up incomplete assignments and review concepts and topics that are difficult. Saturday School will be held this Saturday, March 24, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. We would love for you to come by before class starts at 8:30 and share coffee and donuts with us prior to the start of class! Saturday School will be held in our regular classroom, F-104 in the Hansard Building. Please see the end of this newsletter for a permission form—your student must turn the form in prior to Saturday, or bring the permission form with them on Saturday in order to attend.

Your student should have already signed for a “Missing Assignment” list that we created in order to help him or her turn in any missing assignments prior to Spring Break. The grades for missing assignments will be changed from “incomplete” to a grade of 0 (zero) when the students leave for Spring Break.

Our second opportunity we hope you will participate in will happen in conjunction with our Ecology Unit. We are hoping to build a small garden on the campus that will serve as a rest stop on the migration route for the Monarch butterfly. As shown in the “Monarchs Across Georgia” information, there are several great reasons for building such a garden:

After the students research the type of plants to include as well as the features of the garden required for the survival of the Monarch butterfly and other pollinators, we hope to earn the designation as a “Monarchs Across Georgia Certified Pollinator Habitat”! Actual construction of the garden on our campus will take place on a Saturday in the next month or so, and we hope you will join us in this effort!

…a chance to come share a donut and cup of coffee while affording their son or daughter a chance to get extra tutoring or complete missing assignments…
