Welcome to today’s Kingston Press League One clash with our close rivals Hemel Stags. Hemel have a great history of rugby league but only joined the professional ranks in the same season as us, and we’ve seen some great rugby between the two sides in the past three years. I hope the players, supporters, directors and staff from Hemel enjoy their trip to the Prince of Wales and I’m sure we’ll see another enjoyable game today.

On the pitch, the All Golds rollercoaster continues. Last time out at PoW we had the carving-up of Coventry, only for everything to go pear shaped at Oxford last week.

We’re hoping for another solid home performance today, and it’s great to see Lee’s team in full flow when the confidence is

high. I’m very pleased to note that today is likely to be Phil Cowburn’s 50th professional appearance - a nice achievement for a player who has come through the university ranks and has now established himself as a force in League One. Off the pitch, Dan Garbutt’s community team ran

the most spectacular Cheltenham Rugby Festival at The Folley recently.

Hundreds of children from over 50 local schools were involved - boys and girls - and the whole event was a real success. Well done to Dan and the team and we hope that the sport

has rubbed off on some of those participants who start to play regularly and come down to enjoy All Golds games as well.

Finally today I’d like to welcome staff and students from the University who are enjoying ‘Festival Fortnight’, a celebration of achievement and success by everyone at Gloucestershire. The Fortnight will become an annual event and we hope that All Golds games will continue to be a central feature. If you’re visiting the Prince of Wales for the first time, we really hope you enjoy the game and the atmosphere and come back again soon! #COYAG

Welcome to everyone for this afternoon’s game against Hemel Stags. Looking at the results and performances from each team recently, anything could happen today! We carried on our form of one good game, one poor game last week. After the big win against Coventry I was hoping we’d be able to

kick on against Oxford and build up some momentum. It wasn’t to be and I dare say after the game was the most disappointed I have been so far whilst in charge of the All Golds. Oxford just wanted it a little bit more than us and they were more enthusiastic. We are nowhere near good enough yet to be able to just turn up and think things will happen without doing the tough stuff first. It was expensive injury wise too. Joe Martin broke his ankle and Jamie Murphy pulled his hamstring. Both will be missing for a while. That said, it provides

opportunities for players to stake their claim for a spot in the 17. I have told the players they are basically on a season-long trial this year as I work out which players I think I would want to keep at the club going forward.

Hemel will be difficult opponents today. Jymel Coleman and Michael Brown are particular threats for them on the right, plus they could have a number of players in from Championship side Hunslet, their partner club.

After entering the league in 2012, the Stags are desperate to rubber stamp their place in Rugby League.

Hemel Hempstead Amateur Rugby League Football Club played their first match on 5 April 1981 against Walthamstow-based McEntee, losing 38-0.

Early on, they began as a pub team wearing borrowed jerseys. After a series of friendly fixtures during the summer of 1981 the club was formally constituted and joined the Second Division of the South Amateur Rugby League. The club’s original logo featured Henry VIII as local association football team Hemel F.C. are nicknamed ‘The Tudors’.

In February 2012, Hemel were announced as the second side to join an expanded Championship 1 division for the 2013 season. Hemel Stags beat Huddersfield Underbank Rangers 17-10 in the National Conference League Division 3 Grand Final on 29 September 2012. In their first campaign as a professional outfit,

Hemel Stags finished fifth in the Kingstone Press Championship 1 claiming a play-off place. After defeating Oxford RLFC 30-26 at their Pennine Way Stadium in the first round, Hemel bowed out of the competition following a 28-44 loss away to London Skolars.

Hemel Stags finished the 2014 regular season of the Kingstone Press Championship 1 in the play-off places for the 2nd time in their first 2 seasons of being a semi-professional rugby league club. They finished in 5th position on 33 points.

Last weekend saw a disappointing defeat for Lee Greenwood’s men, with Oxford taking maximum points in a poor afternoon for the side. Hemel also suffered last Sunday as they hosted Swinton at Pennine Way. The 8-32 defeat sees them stranded in 12th, four points ahead of basement side South Wales Scorpions.

We last met in August 2014, where the Stags would claim the spoils with an impressive 44-24 victory.

This will be something the All Golds will want to rectify immediately, and gather points after stuttering as of late. Matt Bradley converted four tries on that August afternoon, and has been

impressive as of late, and will look to keep building up his points tally.

Today’s match highlights will be on our official website and YouTube channel shortly this week.

THE BIGMATCHThis weekend we see more action packed Rugby League, at its Gloucestershire home, the Prince of Wales Stadium. Today the All Golds, led by captain Steve Parry will face a tough encounter with Hemel Stags.

The world of Rugby League has continued to spin away from Cheltenham, and the Kingstone Press League One table has adjusted going into week nine.

There were victories for a mixture of home and travelling sides, with South Wales Scorpions continuing their poor form with an emphatic defeat to northerners, Rochdale

Hornets. Early front runners Oldham recently had their unbeaten run come to an end, and would have more bad luck away at Keighley, who triumphed 32-24, letting local rivals Rochdale go top of the pile. A win for Newcastle over York saw the top four only separated by points difference, proving what a competitive division League One is.This weekend’s round

of fixtures can see any of the quartet at the summit in pole position. As for the bottom, Coventry suffered once again, this time against Barrow. In a mid table clash, Oxford triumphed over Lee Greenwood’s All Golds. Finally North Wales Crusaders recorded a win over London Skolars 18-10 to end another action packed schedule.

RUGBYLEAGUE ROUND-UP

It’s been a number of weeks since we were last here at the Prince of Wales Stadium, after a 66-6 win over Coventry Bears.

University of Gloucestershire student James Mason has been selected to represent the England Universities squad in this month’s 4 nations tournament which takes place in Dublin from June 14 to 19.

James, who is studying sports’ coaching, has been selected for the 20 man squad after impressing during the training squad get together. On hearing of his call up Mason said: “I was over the moon to be selected for the train on squad and now to be selected for the final 20 man squad for England in the 4 nations tournament is unbelievable.”

James graduated from the Rugby League Academy at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College in Bristol and successfully obtained a Rugby League Scholarship with the University of Gloucestershire.

Mason, whose favoured position is loose forward, was educated at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic School in Cardiff. He has been one of the shining lights in the University’s Rugby League team which finished as runners up in the Premier South University league table.

Mason realises there is plenty of tough work ahead but he is confident he’ll be able

to make an impact at the annual 4 nations tournament. England will face games against Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Mason added: “I have lots of hard work ahead of me and one of my goals is to earn a contract with the All Golds as well as having another successful season with the University team.”

He added: “I must give huge thanks to my parents Patrick and Nicola. Also Dan Garbutt has been hugely helpful. I must not forget my first ever Rugby League coaches Jason Coleman and Sarah Denton and the current University coach Tom James who have all helped me develop my game.”

It has been a successful career for the outstanding hooker, who hails from Merthyr Tydfil, who has been one of the club’s most influential players since he joined in 2013.

Parry started playing Rugby League at 15 for the Cardiff Demons before joining the Valley Cougars first team at 17 and representing Wales at under 18s and the Wales ‘A’ team. He has also played Rugby Union in New Zealand for South Westland before returning to the UK

to join League 1 rivals, South Wales Scorpions.

He appeared for the Scorpions no less than 73 times between 2010 and 2013 and still remains a fans favourite at the club -always being welcomed.

He also made 3 appearances for Wales between 2010 and 2012 whilst playing for the South Wales Scorpions.

And today marks his 24th appearance for the All

Golds and with it his 100th professional Rugby League appearance.

The All Golds captain will be hoping to make it an extra special event by securing the All Golds first win over Hemel Stags today at the Prince of Wales Stadium.

On behalf of the entire club we want to extend our thanks to Steve for his services to the club and the wonderful sport of Rugby League and here’s to his next 100 matches!!

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC BREAKS THE CENTURY MARK!

Continuing the theme of the record breaking season the All Golds are delighted to announce that today Captain Fantastic, Steve Parry, makes his 100th professional rugby league appearance.

The University of Gloucestershire All Golds are delighted to announce that they are now in a position to launch a brand new initiative to honor the wearers of the Golden Fern that have appeared for the club more than 50 times. The Fantastic Fifty club will be the milestone club that celebrates the achievements of its inductees.

Today’s clash with Hemel Stags is an important milestone in the career of Phil Cowburn who becomes the first All Gold to reach 50 appearances and inductee

#1 of the Fantastic Fifty club.

Cowburn, 24, a former student at the University of Gloucestershire was an instrumental performer in the title winning BUCS team of 2013. He played in the All Golds very first professional fixture and has hardly missed a fixture since, a testament to the high standards he achieves every time he wears the Golden Fern.

He is the club’s all-time leading try scorer with 20 tries in his 49 appearances

before today and Head Coach, Lee Greenwood, paid tribute to Cowburn by saying: “Phil is one of the players that shows consistency. He will be the first All Golds’ player to reach 50 appearances and I’m sure he will achieve many more records and milestones over the coming years with the club.”

I am sure that all supporters will be upstanding today as Phil makes his way onto the hallowed turf at the Prince of Wales Stadium.

A total of 67,788 fans packed into St James’ Park for the two-day sporting spectacular that saw a full round of First Utility Super League fixtures played at the home of Newcastle United on Saturday and Sunday.

That figure included a record 40,871 on Saturday, when some of Rugby League’s biggest stars sparkled in three memorable matches played in bright sunshine throughout the day.

And today (Sunday), 26,917 fans were treated to another three great contests as the sun once again shone on Rugby League’s feast of action in the North East.

The total weekend attendance of 67,788 is also an all-time Magic Weekend record, surpassing the previous best of 64,552 set at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester, last year.

“Magic Weekend 2015 has been a terrific success and I would like to thank everyone involved for the part they played in a

weekend that will live long in the memory,” said Nigel Wood.

“All the competing clubs deserve praise for the way in which they have continued to embrace a concept which is unique in British sport: not all of them came away from Newcastle with the result they wanted but their contribution to the success of Magic Weekend has been outstanding.

“Thanks also go to all the Rugby League fans who helped create the carnival atmosphere that makes Magic Weekend so special: their passion and enthusiasm for the sport is both invigorating and infectious.

“I would also like to add my personal thanks to people of Newcastle and the North East region who purchased tickets for Magic Weekend in their thousands and will have been spellbound by the event.

“Credit should also go to all the partners, sponsors and agencies whose hard work and commitment ensured

that Rugby League fans were given such a warm welcome at St James’ Park and in and around the city of Newcastle.”

The results from Magic Weekend 2015 were:

Saturday

Widnes Vikings 38, Salford Red Devils 16

Hull FC 46, Hull Kingston Rovers 20

Wigan Warriors 27, Leeds Rhinos 12

Sunday

Catalans Dragons 22, Huddersfield Giants 22

St Helens 20, Warrington Wolves 16

Castleford Tigers 56, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats 16

A decision on the venue for future Magic Weekends will be made following the routine review of this year’s event. That review will take place over the next few months.

Super League Chief Executive Nigel Wood has issued a special ‘thank you’ to everyone who helped make Magic Weekend 2015 the most successful in the event’s history.

Lewis is a strong, powerful centre with pace and offloading skills so will be a very welcome addition to the squad.

He will bring with him more experience after his time with Wales in the European Championship and his time in Australia and is looking to impress.

He made his professional Rugby League debut for

the South Wales Scorpions in 2010 aged 18 before making the Wales squad for a fixture against Italy. Reece was a member of the inaugural All Golds Championship 1 squad in 2013 but decided in 2014 that it was time to test his skills in the Rugby League hot bed of Australia.

Lewis joined the Toowoomba Clydesdale squad in Australia and after a season abroad decided to return home. Whilst in Australia Lewis kept in touch and on his arrival back he had no questions about re-signing with the club.

WHAT IS IT THAT YOU LOVE ABOUT RUGBY LEAGUE?

The rugby festival was inaugurated in 2008, 100 years on from the match between the New Zealand All Golds and Great Britain, which marked the birth of international rugby league, at the former athletic ground in Cheltenham. The competition is part of the Sky Try programme, a multi-million pound project that will empower Rugby League clubs’ charitable Foundations across the country to make a massive difference by delivering new opportunities to play, watch and become involved in the sport. The aim of Sky Try is to create a game wide strategy for professional clubs to work in their local area to develop the sport in 4 main areas – 1) Primary Schools Rugby League 2) Key stage 3 secondary schools 3) Touch Rugby League 4) Make the big games bigger.

17 schools provided a total of 36 boys teams & 14 girls teams to the event and over 500 participants descended upon the Folley Sports Ground and the Prince of Wales Stadium in Cheltenham to take part in the days rugby league activity across no less than 12 pitches. The action was thick and fast and the quality of rugby league on display was outstanding, a credit to the hard work of the pupils, teachers and volunteers from each school.

Head of Community Development for the All Golds, Dan Garbutt, was excited by the success of the tournament:

“The 1908 Cup is heading towards its 10th year of existence so is becoming a bit of a fixture in local school competitions and alongside the Golden Fern cup for girls teams are growing in popularity”

“It’s a testament to how popular this competition is that we ran out of space at the Folly and had to hold it across two sites. Alongside this competition, we have held a very successful teacher training event and qualified 16 new match officials so this has been a very good few weeks for Rugby League in Gloucestershire”

The teams to take the spoils were as follows:

Warriors’ Media Manager Chris Wilson looks at the team’s progress so far. This season was always going to be something of a transition for the Warriors as the club moved from playing in a competitive but largely ‘participatory’ league to a competitive league looking at employing professional standards throughout.

The task was to complete fixtures, be competitive while gathering as many wins as possible along the way.

So far, those three boxes have all been ticked. Fixtures have been completed and the side has certainly been competitive.

The three wins gained so far could easily have been five or six given a bit more composure at crucial times and the usual hope of a favourable bounce of the ball or referee’s decision here and there. The team has not yet been outclassed though the Coventry Bears side look to be a cut above everyone else and are many people’s tip for the title.

Only the performance against Sheffield could be

said to be poor with too many players having an off day all at once. The whole squad is perfectly capable of playing at this level and there have been some stand out performances from many of the lads, too many to single out individually.

Perhaps the only area of concern is the size of the squad. Much as the All Golds themselves are finding out as wear and tear takes its toll, there is very little fat on the bones and the Warriors’ coach Richard Jones has yet to make any really hard selection decisions on who plays and who doesn’t.

Injuries and other absences come round regularly and the physio, sorry, sports therapist, has her work cut out on Tuesdays patching guys up for the next game. The Warriors are the only side to have played each week so far and with everyone else having games in hand there is much to play for in the second half of the season.

There are still two games to play in Wales and all three Welsh sides, Torfaen Tigers, Valley Cougars and the Raiders RL still have

to come this side of the bridge. Those clashes will be the highlight as will the daunting trip to Sheffield for the clash with the Hallam Eagles.

The one fly in the ointment was mentioned a couple of paragraphs ago; the Warriors’ injury situation. No sooner do a couple of players come back than three go lame. It’s a tough old game and the moral is a pre-season and big recruitment drive for next year, planning for which begins right now.

Just to finish, here is a shameless plug for the Warriors’ fundraising Race Night on Friday 12 June, 7.30pm at the Oxstalls Tennis Centre, Gloucester.

Tickets are available from the club ([email protected]) and will also be available on the door. They cost £5 which includes a ploughman’s supper. Come down, have a great evening and support the Warriors.

This weekend, the Conference League South reaches its halfway point and the Gloucestershire Warriors sit in sixth place in the nine-team league.

P26 THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE ALL GOLDS

OXFORD CAME BACK FROM 12-0 DOWN TO CLAIM VICTORY AND MOVE LEVEL ON POINTS WITH THE ALL GOLDS IN THE LEAGUE 1 TABLE.

The home side got off to a shaky start when they knocked on straight from the kick off. The All Golds completed their first set in the Oxford half but couldn’t break through. After easily defending Oxford’s first attack the Golden Fern progressed forward and

on 8 minutes scored the game’s first points when the referee awarded a penalty try. Mark Bowen’s chipped kick caused panic in the home side’s defence and just as Alex Davidson was about to collect and score he was taken out. Matt Bradley added on the extras from in front of the posts to give the All Golds a 6 point lead.

Shortly after the Golden Fern extended its advantage when Oxford conceded a penalty 20 yards inside their own half. The All Golds chose to kick for goal and Matt Bradley dissected the posts to give his side an 8 point cushion.

Try number 2 came just before the half hour mark. The All Golds broke menacingly down the left wing with Ryan Pywell and Phil Cowburn exchanging passes. They switched play to find the spare men on the right side and it was Jamie Murphy who was all alone on the right wing. He scored in the corner, adding to his 2 tries he scored against Coventry last time out. From wide on the touchline Matt Bradley narrowly missed his conversion.

Oxford came back strong and it was some resolute All Golds defence that kept them at bay. On several

occasions they looked to be in only for a last gasp hit from one of the All Golds. It looked like the away side would take their 12 point lead into the break but right on the stroke of half time Oxford’s patience in attack was rewarded when centre Andrew Hoggins went over in the corner. Nathan Kitson struck a pin point conversion from out wide to cut the All Golds lead in half as the first half came to a close.

Oxford, subdued and hesitant in the first half, were the polar opposite in the second half as they bossed the game. The All Golds would have fancied extending their lead when Oxford’s second row Adam Withington was yellow carded for a high tackle but it was Oxford who got the next score when Josh Scott scrambled over. Kitson made no mistake with the

conversion to draw Oxford level at 12-12.

Heading into the crucial final quarter the All Golds suffered a serious injury when full back Joe Martin went over on his ankle. After receiving medical assistance he, with the help of the club doctors, limped off the field of play.

Momentum was with Oxford and they took the lead on 65 minutes when Aaron Jones-Bishop found himself in space out wide. The left winger touched down in the corner but Kitson’s first miss of the game meant all outcomes were feasible heading into the closing stages.

The game’s crucial score came on 72 minutes. After an All Golds’ attack broke down on halfway the home side moved down the left

wing. Andy Matthews found Bristolian Marcus Brooker who unselfishly returned the ball to Matthews who ran through to score between the posts. Kitson somehow missed his conversion attempt from dead in front of the posts but Oxford were 8 points clear with only 7 minutes remaining.

Try as they might the All Golds couldn’t muster another score. Oxford, second best for large periods of the first half,

stormed back to claim the victory after a dominant second half showing. Attention now turns to today’s clash with Hemel (a team the All Golds have never beaten), at the Prince of Wales stadium.
