There are hundreds of Pokémon known all around the world but, this time, we are only going to learn about the starter ones. The Starter Pokémon are the ones who are given to you at the beginning of every Pokémon game, from Pokémon Red and Green to Pokémon X and Y.

GENERATION 1 (1996-1999)

BULBASAURBulbasaur is a small, quadruped

Pokémon with green or bluish green skin and dark patches. Its thick legs each end with three sharp claws. Its eyes have red irises, while the sclera and pupils are white. Bulbasaur has a pair of small, pointed teeth visible when its mouth is open. It has a bulb on its back, grown from a seed planted there at birth. The bulb provides it with energy through photosynthesis as well as from the nutrient-rich seeds contained within.

Pokédex Entry:A strange seed was planted on its back at birth. The plant sprouts and grows with this Pokémon.

GENERATION 1 (1996-1999)

CHARMANDERCharmander is an orange, bipedal, reptilian

creature. Charmander has two small fangs visible on its upper and lower jaws and blue eyes. It has a cream-colored underside and an expansive cream marking on the soles of its feet. Its arms and legs are short, and it has four fingers and three clawed toes. A flame burns on the tip of its tail, which is there even at birth. This flame can be used as an indication of Charmander's health and mood. The flame burns brightly when it is strong and weakly when it is weak. When Charmander is happy, the flame will waver; it will blaze if Charmander is enraged. It is said that Charmander dies if its flame goes out.

Pokédex Entry:Obviously prefers hot places. When it rains, steam is said to spout from the tip of its tail.

GENERATION 1 (1996-1999)

SQUIRTLE

Squirtle is a small Pokémon that resembles a light blue turtle. While it typically walks on its two short legs, it has been shown to run on all fours in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It has large brown eyes and a slightly hooked upper lip. Each of its hands and feet has three pointed digits. The end of its long tail curls inward. Its body is encased by a tough shell that forms and hardens after birth. This shell is brown on the top, pale yellow on the bottom, and has a thick white ridge between the two halves.

Pokédex Entry:After birth, its back swells and hardens into a shell. Powerfully sprays foam from its mouth.

GENERATION 2 (1999-2002)

CHIKORITAChikorita is a small, pale green Pokémon with a darker necklace of buds. It has a large head in proportion to the rest of its body with large red eyes that appear to have no pupils. It has four short legs with a single nailed toe on each and a small tail. Its most distinguishing feature is the large leaf on the top of its head, which is usually longer than the rest of its body. Aside from the soothing aroma that wafts from its leaf, Chikorita uses its leaf to determine the temperature and humidity of the surrounding air.

Pokédex Entry:A sweet aroma gently wafts from the leaf on its head. It is docile and loves to soak up the sun's rays.

GENERATION 2 (1999-2002)

Cyndaquil is a small, bipedal Pokémon with bluish fur on top of its body, and a milky color on the underside. Cyndaquil seems to be a composite of features from the echidna and the shrew. The echidna features are the flames from its back, while its general body shape is shrew-like. Its eyes are often closed and it has a long, thin snout. It lacks claws on its forelimbs, but has a single claw on each hind foot. Cyndaquil is usually timid by nature and often curls into a ball when intimidated. It has four red spots on its back from which its flames erupt. Cyndaquil is capable of defending itself using these flames. The fire grows more powerful as Cyndaquil becomes more angry or defensive. Though rare in the wild, few can be found living on grasslands.

Pokédex Entry:It is timid, and always curls itself up in a ball. If attacked, it flares up its back for protection.

GENERATION 2 (1999-2002)

Totodile resembles a bipedal, blue crocodile with red spines on its back and tail. The spine on its back is larger with additional ridges. Totodile's head is large, with ridges above its eyes. Much of the head's size is composed of Totodile's snout and strong jaws. There are two visible teeth on the tip of its upper jaw, and two rows of three teeth on each side of its lower jaw. On its chest is a yellow, somewhat V-shaped pattern that extends to its arms with a line bisecting the pattern. Totodile has five sharp claws and three toes. Its eyes are red and surrounded by a dark blue or black pattern. Totodile tends to be playful by nature, and has a habit of biting anything it sees, including its Trainer. In the wild, Totodile prefers to live along the edges of bodies of water.

Pokédex Entry:Its well-developed jaws are powerful and capable of crushing anything. Even its trainer must be careful.

GENERATION 3 (2002-2006)

TREECKO

Treecko is a small, green, bipedal reptilian Pokémon. It has yellow eyes with long, narrow pupils. Treecko's hands and feet each have three digits covered with tiny spikes. These spikes allow it to scale vertical walls with ease. Its stomach and throat are red. It also has a line across on its stomach resembling a pouch. Treecko has a large, dark green tail with two separate lobes that it uses to sense humidity. This ability allows it to predict the next day's weather.

Pokédex Entry:Treecko has small hooks on the bottom of its feet that enable it to scale vertical walls. This Pokémon attacks by slamming foes with its thick tail.

GENERATION 3 (2002-2006)

Torchic is a small, chick Pokémon with stubby, downy, yellow wings. Its body is covered with orange feathers. There is an orange and yellow crest on its head that resembles a flame. Its two thin legs and short beak of are a light brownish yellow, and the feet have three toes in front and one in the back. A male Torchic will have a small black speck on its rear that is not present in females.

Pokédex Entry:Torchic sticks with its Trainer, following behind with unsteady steps. This Pokémon breathes fire of over 1,800 degrees F, including fireballs that leave the foe scorched black.

GENERATION 3 (2002-2006)

Mudkip is a small amphibious quadruped Pokémon. It has a blue body with a light-blue underside. It has a large head with a blue fin on top, and a light-blue tail fin. It has black, beady eyes and orange, star-shaped gills on its cheeks. By using the fin on its head, Mudkip is able to detect changes in air and water currents as well as bodies of water. Its fin can also point in a certain direction, as seen in the anime. Mudkip is capable of moving or crushing boulders larger than itself. Its large tail fin propels it through water with powerful acceleration.

Pokédex Entry:The fin on Mudkip's head acts as highly sensitive radar. Using this fin to sense movements of water and air, this Pokémon can determine what is taking place around it without using its eyes.

GENERATION 4 (2006-2010)

TURTWIG

Turtwig is a small, light green, quadruped Pokémon resembling a turtle or tortoise. Its eyes, feet, and lower jaw are yellow. Its body is covered by a brown shell that is composed of earth. The shell has a thick black stripe and a black rim. On a very healthy Turtwig, the shell should feel moist. A small seedling grows on a brown patch on its head. This seedling will wilt if the Pokémon becomes thirsty. As a plant-based Pokémon, Turtwig usually nourishes itself through photosynthesis. It also drinks water, which hardens its soil-based shell. Due to its status as a starter Pokémon, a wild Turtwig is hard to come by and it is generally found under the ownership of Trainers.

Pokédex Entry:Made from soil, the shell on its back hardens when it drinks water. It lives along lakes.

GENERATION 4 (2006-2010)

Chimchar is a bipedal Pokémon resembling a chimpanzee. Its fur is primarily a shade of orange, though its face, outer ears, underbelly, hands, and feet are light yellow. Its rear has a small, round, red patch that is usually obscured by flames produced by burning gas in its stomach. These flames go out when it goes to sleep, and burn weakly when it feels ill. Its ears are large in comparison to its head size and red inside. Chimchar has red markings nearly surrounding its eyes, a swirl-like symbol on its chest, and five fingers on its hands with three toes on its feet. It has a swirly crest of hair on its head. Being very agile, it is able to climb the rocky ledges of tall mountains, where it lives.

Pokédex Entry:It agilely scales sheer cliffs to live atop craggy mountains. Its fire is put out when it sleeps.

GENERATION 4 (2006-2010)

Piplup bears semblance to a penguin chick. It has yellow feet and a light-blue body. There are two white spots on its chest that seem to resemble buttons on a suit. It also appears to have a blue cape. It has a circular, blue head with white circles around its eyes and a small, yellow beak. The light blue mark between its eyes above the beak resembles a small crown.

Pokédex Entry:Because it is very proud, it hates accepting food from people. Its thick down guards it from cold.

GENERATION 5 (2010-2013)

SNIVYSnivy is a bipedal, reptilian Pokémon with a slender build. Most of its body is green with a cream underside. A yellow stripe runs down the length of its back and tail, and it has yellow markings around its large eyes. Two curved yellow structures that resemble leaves or small wings protrude from its shoulders and bend backwards. Its slender arms have three fingers, while its tiny feet have no digits whatsoever. It has a large, palmate leaf with three prongs on the end of its tail. This tail is capable of performing photosynthesis, which allows Snivy to move more quickly. However, the tail will begin to droop when Snivy loses energy. This Pokémon has a calm, collected demeanor.

Pokédex Entry:It is very intelligent and calm. Being exposed to lots of sunlight makes its movements swifter.

GENERATION 5 (2010-2013)

Tepig is a quadruped, pig-like Pokémon that is primarily orange with black and yellow markings. It has oval eyes, a ruddy pink nose, and a thick stripe of yellow over its snout. The upper portion of its head is black, and its long, pointed ears are positioned closely together on the top of its head. Tepig has short legs with black front feet. A black band covers its lower back and rear. Its curly tail is tipped with a ruddy pink sphere.

Pokédex Entry:It can deftly dodge its foe's attacks while shooting fireballs from its nose. It roasts berries before it eats them.

GENERATION 5 (2010-2013)

Oshawott is a bipedal sea otter-like Pokémon. It has a spherical white head with small, triangular dark-blue ears on the sides. Oshawott's eyes are dark and its dark orange nose is shaped like a horizontal oval. Several freckles cover its cheeks, and two pointed teeth can be seen when it opens its mouth. The light blue fur on its body forms bubble shapes around its neck. Its arms are white and rounded, while its feet are dark blue with three toes each. It also possesses a rudder-like dark blue tail. It carries a pale yellow seashell called a "scalchop" on its belly. This shell is made of the same material as its claws, and is used for both battle and cracking hard berries.

Pokédex Entry:It fights using the scalchop on its stomach. In response to an attack, it retaliates immediately by slashing.

GENERATION 6 (2013-

PRESENT)

CHESPINChespin is a bipedal, mammalian Pokémon. It has a light brown front with dark brown arms and three triangular markings on its face. There is a tough, green shell covering its back, which extends from its head to halfway down its tail. There is a small, off-center hole in the on the back of Chespin's head. The shell can protect Chespin from powerful attacks. Around the face, the shell has four leaf-like spikes, and one split into three parts on the back of its head. These quills are typically soft, but Chespin can stiffen them and use them for attack as well. Chespin's oval eyes are brown, and it has a triangular red nose and rodent-like incisors. Its arms have three fingers, while its feet have two long claws. The visible part of its tapered tail is red. Despite having a curious nature that tends to get it in trouble, Chespin keeps an optimistic outlook and does not worry about small details.

Pokédex Entry:The quills on its head are usually soft. When it flexes them, the points become so hard and sharp that they can pierce rock.

GENERATION 6 (2013-PRESENT)

Fennekin is a quadrupedal, fox-like Pokémon. It is covered in pale yellow fur that is longer on its haunches. Tufts of dark orange fur cover the insides of its large ears, and it has a white muzzle with longer fur on its cheeks. Hot air is vented from its ears, reaching temperatures of over 390 degrees Fahrenheit. It has large eyes with dark orange irises and white sclerae, and a pointed black nose. Fennekin also has small paws with no visible toes and slim legs. Its tail is fluffy with a dark orange tip. Fennekin chews on twigs instead of eating snacks. It can be temperamental, but it tries to do its best for its Trainer.

Pokédex Entry:Eating a twig fills it with energy, and its roomy ears give vent to air hotter than 390 degrees Fahrenheit.

GENERATION 6 (2013-PRESENT)

Froakie is a quadruped, frog-like Pokémon. It is covered in pale blue skin with white front paws. There is a single, dark blue stripe going down the center of its head to its nose. Its eyes are large with yellow sclera, black irises, and white pupils. A cape of white bubbles covers its back, and it has two small bubbles on its nose. These bubbles give Froakie added protection from attacks. Its hind feet have two toes, while its forefeet have three. Froakie is both light and strong, making it capable of jumping incredibly high. It keeps a careful eye on its surroundings, despite its carefree attitude.

Pokédex Entry:It secretes flexible bubbles from its chest and back. The bubbles reduce the damage it would otherwise take when attacked.
