From Fr. Joe In the opening verses of this Sunday’s Gospel

(Matt 11:25-30), the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time,

Jesus prays to God the Father: “I give you praise,

Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although

you have hidden these things from the wise and

the learned you have revealed them to little

ones.” Anyone who has ever been grocery

shopping with a toddler has probably had the

experience of them reaching out or asking for

some of the things they like or want. (In reality we

all do that, but for some reason it seems more

evident when it is not us doing the reaching, and

particularly when it is a little child.) We may have

thoughts along the lines of: Of course they want

that, because they don’t have to pay for it; they

don’t have any money. Sometimes our thoughts

may be more sympathetic: I wish I could get that

for them, but there just isn’t enough money right

now. Now, I’m not saying toddlers (nor anyone

for that matter) should always get what they

want — and often they shouldn't. However, the

wonderful thing implicit in a toddler’s reaching or

request is their total trust in his/her parents.

Essentially, it comes down to thinking, “Why

wouldn’t Mommy or Daddy want to give me

what I want?” Now for those who are immature,

their wants equal needs. (Yes, toddlers are

immature, but there sure seem to be plenty of

immature adults around these days).

When we love someone we do want to give

them (if we are able) what they legitimately

need. Our heavenly Father, is certainly able, and

does give us what we need. We may not readily

recognize God’s hand in providing what we

need, but if we take the time to contemplate –

with eyes of faith – the events and people in our

lives, often God’s providence is evident. Yet

another reason our Blessed Mother, the model

disciple, is someone to emulate — because as

“things” happened to and around her, she

“treasured all these things and reflected on them

in her heart” (Luke 2:19). She pondered. We

would all benefit from a bit more pondering.

Getting back to “little ones”, this total reliance

on God is not about naïve trust that things will just

“happen” to and for us, but confident, faithful

trust in our God who loves us so much, that he is

willing to share his yoke with us. Now I don’t

know about you, but when I hear “Take my yoke

upon you and learn from me” (Matthew 11: 29),

my first thought is of being weighed down and

oppressed, not of something desirable.

However, by Jesus’ offer of us taking his yoke he

is willing to be — desires to be — yoked to us and

to share in our lives as he shares his divine life with

us. There is also the realization that we are called

to cooperate with God’s involvement in our lives

Mass Intentions & More Fr. Joe & Fr. Scott will both be celebrating Mass daily

(without a congregation).

The following are the scheduled intentions for this week.

.................................................. †Margaret T. Werda

……………...Living & Deceased Members of the

Benedict Family

*The Mass intention that was scheduled for Sunday, July 12,

†Gary Kropp, has been moved to Tuesday, July 7.

The reason for this is we no longer have five Masses each

weekend, for the time being.

**Our weekend Mass schedule is subject to change weekly based

on the availability of volunteers.

***Weekday Masses are celebrated and honored privately, but

are now livestreamed via our YouTube channel and on Facebook.

Date of Adoration Ending Early Due to a scheduled funeral Mass, Adoration will end at 1:30 pm (instead

of 2:00 pm) on Wednesday, July 8.

2021 Mass Book Opens for Intentions

Reminder: our 2021 Mass Book is open to schedule intentions.

What 2021 Masses will look like in terms of social distancing, is anyone’s

guess. For this reason, we will only be scheduling two intentions for

Sunday Masses and we will not assign them to any particular time.

Reminder: at this time, weekday Masses are still being honored, but

celebrated privately by our priests.

as we embrace the yoke, not resist it.

This weekend happens to be our country’s

Independence Day holiday weekend. As we

celebrate the birth of our nation, we also

celebrate the privilege of the freedoms we have

in our country. I can’t help but hear in my head

the one-word line Mel Gibson (portraying William

Wallace in the movie “Braveheart”), yells as he is

being executed, “FREEDOOOOM!!!” (Now

“Braveheart” may not be the most historically

accurate movie, but you have to admit it is

inspirational.) We live in a time when so many

people are very keen on their right to the

freedoms we have, and they protest – and

sometimes rightfully so – when those freedoms

are infringed upon. Freedom is one side of what

might be called a proverbial coin. The other side

is as important. It would be good to have an

inspirational movie that proclaimed that other

side just as effectively – “RESPONSIBILITYYYY!!!”

Freedom and responsibility are not only

applicable in civil society, they apply to our faith

and church life as well – maybe even more so.

What a privilege it is to be God’s adopted son or

daughter through our baptism – to be called “to

the glory that has made us a chosen race, a

royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people set

apart.” (Preface I of the Sundays in Ordinary Time

in the Roman Missal) As was the case for Jews

being God’s “Chosen People”, being members

of the Church is not simply a matter of being “set

apart” for membership in a privileged group, but

of the responsibility of the group to make God

known to everyone, and invite everyone –

attract everyone – welcome everyone to share

in the life of the Church.

Yes, we rightfully celebrate the privilege of

being a child of God in the Church, and in our

country of being a citizen of this great nation

with its rights and freedoms. But let us also

accept and place upon our shoulders the yoke

of responsibility.

We have so much to ponder – so much to be

grateful for. Have a blessed 14th Week of not-so-

ordinary Ordinary Time.

Stewardship in Our Readings "Let all Your works give You thanks, O Lord, and let Your faithful ones bless

You," says the Psalmist. Stewardship is this "attitude of gratitude" for the

many gifts God has given us.

All Saints Parish Masses Livestreamed:

Weekend and now Weekdays too! By this time in the pandemic, you have already found your preferred

method of participating in Mass from home. But may we suggest another

option which is watching weekend Mass livestreamed from All Saints

Parish. If you are unable to come to weekend Mass at All Saints (and we

do understand), this may be a way for you to still feel connected to your

home parish.

Visit our website, alpenacatholics.org, and click on the YouTube button in

the top right corner. Once you are on our All Saints Parish YouTube

homepage, click on the videos tab and you should be able to find the

recording.

• You can watch the 10:00 am Sunday Mass live as it is happening or, if

that time doesn’t work for you, check back later and watch it when it

is more convenient.

• Daily Mass (which is not a public Mass) is now being livestreamed

weekdays on Facebook and YouTube at 9:00 am. Because of this

addition, there will no longer be the 4 o'clock live feed.

Update on the Petition to Ban Dismemberment Abortion

Recently, the Michigan Bureau of Elections

pulled a sample of 500 signatures to review,

from the 380,000 signatures collected to ban

the dismemberment abortion procedure in

Michigan. Planned Parenthood challenged the

signatures on June 1st and after examining the

sample, the Bureau of Elections recommended

to the State Board of Canvassers to “kill” the MI

Values Life petition. However, it was discovered

that the MI Bureau of Elections had thrown out

about 7,000 signatures before the sample was

even pulled. Upon review of those signatures

that had been discarded, MI Values Life and

Right to Life of MI, found and made the case

that petitions had been thrown out that should

not have been, for reasons such as “small

tears”, “marker stains”, “coffee stains”, and

“stickers on the back” of the petition. If

anything could be said to have obscured the

actual legislation on the back of the petition

(even something as minor as an “e” missing in

the word “the”) it was thrown out. If a signature

was not legible or questionable for some

reason, the entire petition and all 8 signatures

were thrown out. It was found that very few of

the 7,000 signatures that were thrown out were

done so for actual problems with the

signatures. Fortunately, upon making this case

to the Board of Canvassers, the board (made

up of 2 Republicans and 2 Democrats) voted

unanimously to require that a second, larger

sample be pulled from the pool which

included signatures added back in that were

not really damaged from the 7,000 thrown out.

Praise God for justice and for this opportunity to

meet the signature requirements to end this

horrific abortion procedure currently legal in

Michigan!

Please pray every day for the success of this

petition and for an end to dismemberment

abortion (and all abortion) in our state, our

nation, and our world.
