St. Thomas Aquinas

CELEBRATION OF FAITH VIRTUES OF THE MONTH NOVEMBER… PEACE “Peace I leave to you, my peace I give to you” John 14:27 With Remembrance Day on November 11

th, students kept in mind the theme of peace for most of the month. We com-

mend the following teachers who worked diligently with the students in giving the school an outstanding performance and strong message regarding “Peace” in our daily lives. Thank you Mme. Nobre-Peres, Mrs. Stellato, Mrs. Fracassi, Mme. Rose, Mrs. Ferrarelli, and Ms. Makhlouf. Many thanks goes out to the students who practiced, performed, and sang phenomenally in preparing for the service. Through the Anti-Bullying events of November 14

th to 17

th, and as well

throughout the rest of the month, we hosted presentations within the gym from Constable Belligero and also Bruce Lang-ford from Stand up Now Productions. These presentations enabled our students to be more aware of how they deal with their peers on a daily basis. As well, the students identified and understand through drama and videos, right and wrong behaviours that may cause emotional and physical injuries. Through morning P.A. announcements, assemblies, anti-bullying presentations, teacher reminders to continue to act in a peaceful and respectful manner at all times, our students are becoming aware of safe play indoors and outdoors on school grounds. In our year of “Witness”, we continue to teach our students social justice and also to act upon it within the signs of our time.

DECEMBER… CHARITY Ubi Caritas et amor, Deus ibi est – Where there is charity and love, God is there “Advent” derives from the latin word adventus meaning "coming". It is a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. „Tis the season of giving with joy in preparation of the birth of Christ. All Saints C.S. is getting ready for Jesus‟ birthday and demonstrating it through artwork, concerts, our Advent Mass, Opera-tion Christmas Child and many other activities evident within classrooms. This month we keep our faith and history strong through the retelling of the birth of a special Baby that changed our lives for centuries. We welcome the community to our Advent Mass on December 13th, the Starkids production on December 20th, and to the Kindergarten and Primary con-certs in the gym on December 21st.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION Commencing January 9th, 2012 and onwards, Junior Kindergarten registration for those students born in 2007 will be held during the day from 8:00am to 4:00pm. Please call the secretary at (416) 393-5290 for information and a registration appoint-ment before coming to the school. For parents unable to attend during the day, evening regis-tration will be on Thursday, January 19th, 2012 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at All Saints Catholic School.

STUDENTS PRAY THE ROSARY The students of All Saints School are learning the importance of prayer and how to pray the Rosary. The many dedicated volun-teers generously offer their time and talents to spread the love of Jesus and Mary to the students. There are three programs that continue this commitment. The first is the Rosary Apostolate. The volunteers visit the school once a month on a Wednesday to pray the Rosary with students from grades 1-8. On May 23rd, the students will assemble in the gym to participate in a Marian Celebration. The grade 4 students are also participating in Radio Maria, a live broadcast of the Holy Rosary. The broadcasts take place at 1:00 p.m. on the following dates: November 16th, January 25th, March 21st, and May 16th. You can listen and pray with our stu-dents as they recite the Holy Rosary live on air at www.hmwn.net, or listen in on another time to past broadcast Rosary archives. Finally, Mrs. Manco recites the Rosary at the Prayer Table near the music room every morning at 10:10 recess to any interested students during certain months of the year. We are very grateful to all the volunteers. To make these initiatives even more meaningful to everyone, the students are using their very own Rosaries which were blessed by Father Glaba at our Opening School Mass.

SAFE SCHOOLS VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL Toronto Catholic District School Board policy states that all visitors to the school MUST report to the office. This is foremost to ensure the safety of all students. In an effort to promote the independence of the students and to ensure the integrity of programs by minimizing interruptions during class time, we request that students arrive prepared for the school day with all the items they require (i.e. homework, lunch, physical education clothing, musical instruments etc.). If you would like to contact your child‟s teacher, you may do so through the school office. Please try to make after school arrangements before school.

STUDENT SAFE ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE PROGRAM

We continue to remind you to contact the school before 8:45 a.m. if your child is going to be absent from school. If we are unable to take your call, you can leave a message on our answering machine. Please ensure that we have a current emergency number where you can be con-tacted. If you are picking up your child early, please send a note to your child‟s teacher. Please be sure to report to the office to sign them out. If you are returning before the end of the day, please sign your child back in at the office. All students on buses must ride the buses to and from school every day.

ALLERGEN AWARE Please take special note that we have children in our school who have very serious allergies to nut products. According to Sabrina‟s Law, we must make every effort to maintain a nut free environ-ment in order to help keep these children safe. We ask that you not bring in or send in any food items to be shared with other students in the class. Please note that baked goods and treats are not permitted for birthday celebrations. Please consider other options that do not involve any food. We apologize for the inconvenience; however, we are certain you will agree that these measures are necessary in order to ensure the safety and welfare of our children.

PERSONAL PROPERTY The school does not take any responsibility for the loss or theft of personal items brought onto school premises by stu-dents. The school will therefore, not reimburse or replace lost or stolen articles, under any circumstances. This will in-clude all articles of clothing (label items with a marker); personal school supplies such as fancy or expensive pens, markers, binders and pencil cases, etc; simple or electronic toys; calculators, laptops, iPod‟s, CD‟s, etc. Please note that collector cards of any kind are not permitted, in addition to all cell phones and any other social media devices. These items will be immediately confiscated by staff and brought to the Principal‟s attention. We ask both parents and stu-dents for their full co-operation in this matter. (Please note that the Board‟s insurance policy does not cover property owned by staff or students).

INCLEMENT WEATHER On days when the weather is inclement the students may be permitted to enter the building at 8:30am On such days, the recess periods may be indoor and those students who stay for lunch will be supervised in the building. Weather conditions must be particularly severe, cold weather alone does not warrant an early entry into the building or indoor recess periods. Those decisions will be made accordingly. We believe that children profit greatly from recess breaks as they get out into the fresh air and burn off some energy in play activities. This will make them more alert and ready to continue their studies when they come in. It is important for children, particularly the younger children in the primary grades, to come to school dressed properly for the weather. A reminder to everyone that students who are well enough to be at school are well enough to go out for recess. We do not have personnel to supervise students who wish to stay in for recess due to illness. If they are too ill to go out for recess, then they should be home for the day. This will allow for quicker recovery and less teaching and learning time lost to illness.

REPORTING OF CANCELLATIONS OR CLOSURES DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER Cancellation of school bus transportation or school closures due to inclement weather will be reported through the fol-lowing vehicles: News releases to all media outlets in Toronto (Note: although the news release is provided to the media outlets, there is no guarantee that all television and radio stations will broadcast the information in a timely fashion.) Communications will endeavour to send an email to everyone on exchange to advise them of any cancellations or clo-sures. Communications will also endeavour to send out the information electronically to E-News subscribers (Note: If you do not already subscribe to E-News, but wish to do so, please visit our website at www.tcdsb.org and click on the E-News icon on the top right hand side of the homepage). Updates will also be posted on the Board‟s 24-hour information line, 416-222-8282, extension 2873. The information will also be posted on the Board‟s website at www.tcdsb.org or www.tcdsb.org/weather.htm. The Transportation Department will post this information on its website at http://www.schoolbus.to/c_home.asp

ATTENDANCE / PUNCTUALITY/PREPARATION The Education Act states that students must attend school regularly and punctually. Parents are to notify the school (416)393-5290 of a child‟s absence. You may call anytime and leave a message on the answering machine. Students who arrive late for school must check in at the main office to ensure safe arrival and to help in keeping accurate attendance profiles. Attendance referrals will be sent to the Social Worker and persistent tardiness may result in school detentions. Students are expected to arrive prior to the bell. All students are to arrive prepared to work and learn. Preparation includes the completion of daily assignments that are done to the best of the individual student‟s ability. Preparation also implies that the student devotes appropriate time to study in ad-vance of test situations.

MEDICATION Principals, teachers and support staff of the TCDSB are not permitted to administer any type of prescription medication during the school day, unless we have written, authorization signed by you the parent, and the prescribing physician. The forms to dispense any medication must be updated on a regular basis and are available from the school principal. Please be advised that staff in TCDSB schools will not dispense non-

prescription medications to students. Students who need “puffers” should have one at school and at home. All medica-tions will be stored in the main office. Please notify the school if your child suffers from any type of allergy.

PARKING A reminder to all that the school parking lot is for staff only. Please do not use it for parking as we do not have enough spots for staff. Our students have been instructed not to enter the parking lot for safety reasons. Father Glaba has gra-ciously volunteered the use of the church parking lot for our parents. Please observe and respect the “in” and “out” flow in the church parking lot. There is absolutely NO PARKING in the handicapped spaces at the front of the school. The fine is substantial and we need to have those spaces clear for their appro-priate use by those that need them. A reminder to all that Renault is strictly a “Drop Off Kiss and Ride”, and there is absolutely no parking permitted within the sign boundaries. Everyone is en-couraged to use the PSP in the school parking lot. Police and Parking Enforcement have as-sured us that Renault will be closely monitored for proper use.

STUDENT AWARD ASSEMBLIES On Friday November 25th, All Saints Catholic School held a Student Awards Assemblies in the gym. These assemblies recognized students who have demonstrated an active participation in sports such as soccer and volleyball. As well, in regards to our Progress Reports, teachers were able to award students with a bronze medal who achieved an average of 80% within all subject areas, or students who worked successfully and effectively improving their grades but unable to necessarily reach the average of 80%. We continue to encourage students to continue their academic efforts and to strive for the next medal,

CURRICULUM PROGRESS REPORTS Progress reports were sent home on November 15, 2011. We hope all of you had a chance to meet with your child‟s teacher for a Parent-Teacher Conference on the evenings of Wednesday, November 16th and Thursday, November 17th, 2011. If you have not seen your child‟s teacher, please feel free to contact the teacher for an appointment. Please note that communication is very important regarding your child‟s progress. Remember if you are unable to make a phone call, another effective tool of communication is your child‟s agenda. Please check your child‟s agenda on a nightly basis and sign it as a confirmation that you have seen your child‟s agenda. This will certify that your child has completed all required homework to the best of his/her ability and is therefore ready for school the next day. Thank you for your support in set-ting up your children for academic success.

LIBRARIAN’S CORNER The Scholastic Book Fair‟s “To the Book Fair and Beyond” reading celebration was launched on November 14, 2011. For four days the Fair provided out-of-this-world excite-ment and was a fantastic celebration of books and reading. This year‟s Fair sold over $11,000 worth of books! All profits ($3,217.92) will be put towards purchasing new books and other items for the library. The Book Fair would not have been possible without the wonderful parent volunteers who worked tirelessly to make the event a huge success. Thank you for helping make our students lifelong readers – we couldn‟t do it without your help! Finally, congratulations to Madison Ferrer in Mrs. Roman‟s Grade 2 class who was the winner of this year‟s Family Event Contest. Madison won $25 worth of books for herself and another $25 worth of books for her class. Again, thank you to everyone for making this year‟s Scholastic Book Fair one of the most successful in All Saints School history!

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES INTERMEDIATE BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL The boys‟ and girls‟ volleyball teams here at All Saints have a proud tradition of winning and competing to the best of their ability; the banners that hang from the walls are a testament to the hard work of students past and present. The team members demonstrated the pride, perseverance and character that makes All Saints a contending school year after year. The boys‟ team is a dynamic group of students who represented our school with vigour and enthusiasm. They competed at two tournaments this year: the Divisional Championship and the St. Barnabas Invitational. The only losses the boys suffered were to the eventual Regional Champions from St. Pius and the reigning City Champions from St. Barnabas. Congratulations to the boys on a fine season. The boys‟ team members are: Ryan DiStasi, Noah DiStasi, Noah Pancer-Cinque, Allen Jeremiah, Nathanial Smith-Sarne, Mario Matisa, John David Bicomong, Alejandro Castro, Robert Milaniuk, Henryk Ogrodznyk and Andrew Macri. The girls‟ team is a group of talented individuals who displayed skills beyond their years. The girls‟ team was the young-est team to participate at the intermediate tournaments. They demonstrated grit, toughness and tenacity whenever they competed. The girls set and accomplished the goal of winning the Divisional Championships for the eighth straight year and qualifying for the Regional Championships. Congratulations to the girls on a terrific season. The team members are: Andrea Baffone, Julia Testani, Lauren Guido, Sara Pelosi, Emily Pelosi, Hanna Bucci, Meghan Myers, Elizabeth Seredina, Alicia Osagie, Tayna Romeiro and Bianca Bria. The girls and coaches would like to thank all the parent volunteers for tak-ing the time out of their busy schedules to drive to the tournaments. Finally, we look forward to Junior Volleyball and encourage those students in grades 2-6 to try-out for the boys‟ and girls‟

teams. Everyone is welcome! Come on out so that we can continue the winning tradition at All Saints.

CHESS CLUB Quoting the American Chess Foundation: “Chess is the gymnasium of the mind”. Chess, which begins as an intellectual recreation, soon becomes a mental exercise. A youngster taking part in a chess program develops the following: logic, reasoning, problem solving abilities, memory, concentration, visualization skills, critical thinking, hand – eye- co-ordination, poise, self-expression, organized work habits, patience, determination, self-confidence and good sportspersonship. Even more gratifying is the accompanying improvement in the student‟s attitude towards scholastic performance. Test scores go up, and students develop confidence in their ability to succeed at schoolwork. Evidence demonstrates chess can be a powerful tool to help children by teaching them to use their minds and making them believe in their own intellectual abilities. Natalia Khoudgarian is very experi-enced with youngsters and holds the title of International Woman Master. Natalia participated in various tourna-ments in Canada with great success. She was Canada's Woman Chess Champion (2006-2009) and Canada's highest ranked Woman Chess player (1996-2008). She represented Canada at Women's Olympiads in 1996-Armenia (2nd board), in 2006-Italy (1st board), in 2008-Germany (1st board). In 2006 she played in the Women's World Championship in Yekaterinburg. Each session consists of one-hour over a ten week period. The session is open to students from grade one to three and four to six during the lunch hour (October to December: 11:30pm – 12:30pm). The total cost is $70:00.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL 2011-2012 ELECTIONS On Monday September 26, 2011 All Saints Catholic School held it‟s first CSAC meeting of the year. CSAC elections were held and the results are as follows. The CSAC Executive consists of: Rossana Broderick - Chair; Dina Savaglio – Vice Chair; Marina Rochon – Secretary; John Guido – Treasurer. Members at large: Nora De Lellis, Joanne D’Onofrio; Ana Paula Elliott; Frank Gulli; Mayeli Macias; Paula Magalhaes; Kelly Margani; Susan Perusini; Tracey Pitoscia; Victoria Romero; Teresa Rosati; Lisa Valenti-Sorbara; Robin Whalen. Our Catholic School Advisory Council is an integral part of our school community. All parents and staff are most welcome to attend any or all of the meetings. The next CSAC meeting will be held on Monday October 24 , 2011 in the school staffroom. We hope that more parents will contribute their expertise and viewpoints to CSAC meetings. If you are unable to attend meetings, please sponsor CSAC events by attending, or even volunteering some of your time to help out. In the end, we all

want the same thing: a great education for our children. Everyone is welcome. THANK YOU The entire staff at All Saints would like the those parents who graciously gave up their own time on October 4, 2011 during the lunch hour to help supervise our students out in the school yard. This allowed the entire staff to meet in the gym so we could have our staff photo taken. This gesture of co-operation was very much appreciated.

UPCOMING EVENTS "All Saints Fun Fall Raffle" From November 1st to the 17th, we will be selling raffle tickets for a chance to win 5 fabulous prizes. Buy a ticket for your chance to win a great prize and help support our ongoing school initia-tives. Each student will receive one book of 10 tickets to sell to their family and friends for $5.00 a ticket. As well there will be five $100.00 Gift Cards rewarded to the students who sells a winning ticket.

DANCE NEWS The Grade 1 and 2 students have been busy dancing up a storm in the gym every Tuesday for Dance Club. They start each class with a fun, up-beat warm-up and have learned and practiced a variety of steps. They are learning a dance to the song "Party in the U.S.A". The students have so much fun adding on new steps every week to the dance routine. They practice performing the dance as a large groups, as well as taking turns practicing in smaller groups. The students are excited to continue to learn our dance. Students will present to the primary division on De-cember 20th, 2011.

PRIMARY SOCCER HOUSE LEAGUE The students in Grade 2 and 3 have been participating in Soccer House leagues during the lunchtime recess on Wednesdays. All classes have been given the opportunity to play soc-cer games with their grade opponents. This is a non-competitive house league and the stu-dents are demonstrating excellent sportsperson ship towards their peers. The soccer games will continue through December and January. Students are encouraged to refer to the schedule to see when their class is playing.

TEACHER VS. STUDENT GAMES This year, All Saints has started a new weekly event. Every Monday at lunch, the teachers challenge a class of grade 8 students to a sporting activity. The goal of these games is to in-crease the level of physical activity the students experience throughout the school day and to promote a healthy active lifestyle. The first sporting activity was ball hockey. During the games, many teachers participated and showed that even with a few extra years and a few extra pounds, they still have some athletic talent. After playing all of the grade 8 classes, the teachers remain undefeated. Although the teachers are undefeated, Ms. Couto‟s grade 8 class came close to defeating the teachers, but the teachers were able to hang on for a narrow vic-tory. In the following weeks, the teachers will be challenging the grade 8 classes again in a different sport e.g., volleyball. The competition promises to be close and the action fierce. A huge thank you to all teachers and students who have participated in the games.. We look forward to more fun activi-ties in the coming months.

CHESS CLUB The All Saints Chess Club consists of thirty-five members from Grades 1-6. Students meet during lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays for ten consecutive weeks with Mrs. Roman, Ms. Valaitis and Mrs. Khoudgarian, the Chess Coach. Dur-ing the first half of each session, students are introduced to chess rules, strategies, values of pieces and board co-ordinates. During the second half of each session, they are expected to apply those learned strategies through chess play. The beauty of the Chess Club is that students enjoy themselves while becoming better problem solvers, critical thinkers and independent decision makers. In Spring 2012, we look forward to representing All Saints at the TCDSB Individual and Team Chess Tournaments.

STUDENT VOICE THE ME TO WE EXPERIENCE

STUDENT VOICE

THE ME TO WE EXPERIENCE The school year thus far has been very successful and productive for the Student Me to We Leaders. The students decided upon a name that best represents their main focus as Catholic School ambassadors at All Saints; Walking in Witness. The leaders have been involved in a variety of activities so far. They have been focusing on team and community building activities during weekly meetings. Many of our leaders have helped to lead school assemblies, such as the Awards and Honour Roll assemblies. Our leaders have also been involved in community volunteer activities, giving of their time to help at All Saints Church. In addition, the Halloween Dance was a great success. All students were dressed in cos-tume, danced, and had a blast! A special thanks to Mr. Grossi for providing us with a great selection of music for the students that day.

ANTI-BULLYING SYMPOSIUM

On Thursday, November 17th, two student leaders were asked to attend an Anti-Bullying Symposium at Montecasino Banquet Hall with Mr. Stellato and Mrs. Broderick. Our leaders had a great time, and learned many interesting facts about bullying, and the affects that it can have on a school community. They also discussed some strategies to prevent bullying from occurring at school, and were able to in-teract with other student leaders from various schools. The student leaders reported on the outcomes of the Symposium to the CSAC members, as well as their fellow team mates. They have a variety of activities and ideas that they would like to incorporate in the future at All Saints, to create awareness of Anti-Bullying issues amongst the school community, and make our school community bully-free.

VOW OF SILENCE Another initiative that the Student Me to We Leaders were busy preparing our school community for the Vow of Silence. The Vow of Silence took place on Wednesday, November 30th. The primary students were silent for an hour, the junior students were silent for two hours, and the intermediate students were silent for the entire school day. This school-wide initiative was a great success, and the money raised will be donated to the Free the Children Social Justice Organization, to support those children who suffer from poverty and ex-ploitation around the world. Please stay tuned for future student leader events and social justice initiatives during the school year.

ECOSCHOOLS The student leaders will be visiting each classroom in the near future to conduct an eco-review audit. They will also be remind-ing students about the importance of recycling. Each classroom will receive a recycling poster that they can refer to during the school year. We look forward to maintaining our EcoSchool status again this year.

The students are excited and working very hard to prepare for this performance. Details regarding times and tickets will be sent home to parents in a letter later in December.

ALL SAINTS CATHOLIC SCHOOL

The Toronto Catholic Parent Involvement Committee is a parent-led

committee that partners with the Staff and Trustees of the TCDSB to

support student achievement through parent engagement.

December 2011 The 2011 CPIC Summit and Parent Out-Reach Conference was a success! The day would not have been possi-ble without all the parents and CSAC members who took the time out of their day to come out and get information about how to become a more informed parent and CSAC member. The committee would like to thank all the parents, CSAC members, board staff, trustees, custodians, and exhibitors for their support. Results of the summit will be communicated in the new year. Toronto CPIC is now planning a series of mini-summits / conferences within your community (tentatively Feb 2012). This is another opportunity for parents and CSACs to come together with other schools in their ward to network and share information on how to increase parent involvement and create a welcoming school environment. The successful "ward breakout" discussions of the 2011 CPIC Summit and Conference will now be brought to your community. All the members of the Toronto Catholic Parent Involvement Committee would like to wish the parents and students a Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year! Want to learn more about Toronto CPIC? Consider attending a meeting. All meetings are open to the public and listed at http://www.tcdsb.org/parents/cpic.htm. If you have any questions, comments, concerns please contact your ward representative at http://www.tcdsb.org/parents/cpicmembers.htm or the CSAC at your school.
