Welcome to our Family Service. There is no children’s workshop and we all stay together in church for the whole service. Busy bags are available at the South door and if anyone gets restless, please feel very welcome to walk about the church with them during the service.Later in the service, everyone is invited to come to the altar to receive communion or God’s blessing. All who are communicant members of this or another church are welcome to receive communion. Please bow your head to indicate if you would like a blessing. During communion, the choir sings on behalf of the congregation; this allows us the opportunity to think more deeply about our relationship with God in our lives, through meditating on the words and music chosen for the day. The mass setting today is Messe Basse (Faure). After the service, refreshments are served in the East end of the Church. Please feel very welcome to stay and enjoy, and if you have not been to the church before, please do introduce yourself to one of the clergy or churchwardens – we’d love to meet you.

Weekday Communion Services: Tuesday 12noon; Wednesday 12noon (both Common Worship); Thursday 10.30am (BCP).

Silent Prayer is kept on Fridays at 12.30 pm

The Parish is part of an Anglican Team with St John the Evangelist Church in Grove Lane and St John the Baptist Kingston Vale, and also a member of the Local Ecumenical Project with Union Street Baptist Church and the United Reformed Church in Eden Street.

The Opening Hymn is 49.

The Lord be with you,and also with you.

In a few moments of silence we remember before God the things we have done that are wrong, always remembering God’s readiness to forgive us and set us free from the mistakes of the past.

We say together...

Lord Jesus, we have said and thought and done things that were wrong.  We wish that we had done better and are truly sorry.  We ask you to forgive us and pray that you will help us to start again and be the people you want us to be.Amen

The Lord enrich you with his grace, and nourish you with his blessing; the Lord defend you in trouble and keep you from all evil; the Lord accept your prayers, and absolve you from your offences, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen.

We say together the collect – the special prayer for this Sunday:

O God,who by the leading of a starmanifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth:mercifully grant that we,who know you now by faith, may at last behold your glory face to face;through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

The reading today is Isaiah 60:1-6.

Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his

Page 5: All Saints Church Web viewIn quo Christus natus est. Eya! Maria ventre concepit, The Holy Ghost was aye her with. ... the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The . Final

glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses’ arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the LORD.

The CreedLet us declare our faith in God...

We believe in God the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. We believe in God the Son, who lives in our hearts through faith, and fills us with his love.We believe in God the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us with power from on high.We believe in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen

We stand and sing We three Kings. We three kings of Orient are; Bearing gifts we traverse afar,Field and fountain, moor and mountain, Following yonder star.O star of wonder, star of light, Star with royal beauty bright,Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light.Born a King on Bethlehem plain Gold I bring to crown Him again,King forever, ceasing never, Over us all to reign.O star of wonder...Frankincense to offer have I; Incense owns a Deity nigh;Prayer and praising, voices raising, Worship him, God most high.O star of wonder...

Page 6: All Saints Church Web viewIn quo Christus natus est. Eya! Maria ventre concepit, The Holy Ghost was aye her with. ... the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The . Final

Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume Breathes a life of gathering gloom;Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, Sealed in the stone cold tomb.O star of wonder...Glorious now behold Him arise; King and God and sacrifice;Heaven sings alleluia, Alleluia the earth replies.O star of wonder...

We stand and turn to face the centre of the church from where today’s Gospel is read.

The Gospel Matthew 2:1-12Hear the Gospel of our Lord according to Matthew:Glory to you, O Lord.

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.’ When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: “And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.” ’ Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, ‘Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.’ When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped,

Page 7: All Saints Church Web viewIn quo Christus natus est. Eya! Maria ventre concepit, The Holy Ghost was aye her with. ... the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The . Final

they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure-chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, O Christ.

The TalkThe talk today is given by the Rector, Jonathan Wilkes.

The Prayers of IntercessionLord, in your mercyHear our prayer.

The PeaceThe peace of the Lord be always with youAnd also with you

We offer one another a sign of peace.

After the Peace we sing the Offertory Hymn 52 during which a collection is taken for the work of the church, and the bread and wine for the Eucharist are brought to the altar.

The Eucharistic PrayerYours, Lord, is the greatness, the power,The glory, the splendour, and the majesty; For everything in heaven and on earth is yours. All things come from you,And of your own do we give you.

The Lord is here. His spirit is with us.

Page 8: All Saints Church Web viewIn quo Christus natus est. Eya! Maria ventre concepit, The Holy Ghost was aye her with. ... the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The . Final

Lift up your heartsWe lift them to the LordLet us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is right to praise you, Father; Lord of all creation;in your love you made us for yourself. When we turned away you did not reject us,but came to meet us in your Son.You embraced us as your childrenand welcomed us to sit and eat with you.

In Christ you shared our lifethat we might live in him and he in us.He opened his arms of love upon the crossand made for all the perfect sacrifice for sin.

On the night he was betrayed,at supper with his friendshe took bread, and gave you thanks;he broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat;this is my body which is given for you;do this in remembrance of me.Father we do this in remembrance of him:his body is the bread of life.

At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine,he gave you thanks, and said:Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins:do this in remembrance of me.Father we do this in remembrance of him:his blood is shed for all.

As we proclaim his death and celebrate his rising in glory, send your Holy Spirit that this bread and this winemay be to us the body and blood of your dear Son.As we eat and drink these holy giftsmake us one in Christ, our risen Lord.

Page 9: All Saints Church Web viewIn quo Christus natus est. Eya! Maria ventre concepit, The Holy Ghost was aye her with. ... the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The . Final

With your whole church throughout the worldwe offer you this sacrifice of praiseand lift our voice to join the eternal song of heaven:

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Deus Sabaoth.Pleni sunt cœli et terra Gloria tua.Hosanna in excelsis.Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.

The Lord’s PrayerOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Invitation to CommunionEveryone is welcome to come to the altar to receive a blessing or the bread and wine.

Page 10: All Saints Church Web viewIn quo Christus natus est. Eya! Maria ventre concepit, The Holy Ghost was aye her with. ... the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The . Final

Draw near with faith.Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for youand his blood which he shed for you.Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you,and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.

Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us Thy peace.

While the congregation comes forward to receive Holy Communion the choir will sing A patre unigenitus (Carl Rütti).

A Patre UnigenitusIs through a maiden come to us.Sing we of him and say ‘Welcome!Veni, Redemptor gencium’. Eya!
