ALL SAINTS PARISH 2 NOVEMBER 15, 2020

The first week of November 2020 I completed my annual priestly retreat from Monday-Friday. Having mailed in my ballot weeks ago, I would have to wait to know the results of the 2020 election until the retreat was over. I was certainly tempted to break the silence of the retreat to sneak in a check of the results. But through the grace of God, the better part of me realized that I did not truly want to disrupt this blessed time spent with the Lord with the known pollution of the media world. I am profoundly grateful that the Lord blessed me to go on retreat this week, out of all the other possible weeks. Many people have also told me how lucky I was to be away from the contention and confusion, and indeed I’m grateful for your prayers! As I have preached before, the 2020 election was not an easy election for a Catholic Christian to make a vote in. Neither Donald Trump nor Joe Biden is a “perfect” candidate from the Catholic perspective. When Fr. Joe Thomas lived in the rectory, he and I certainly had our political differences, but as Christian adults we did not let that destroy our friendship. To borrow an analogy by Fr. Joe, think of the parable from the Gospel of Luke about building a house. Over the past 50 years, the Republican Party’s house has a foundation built on the solid-rock of pro-life and religious liberty. However, the walls, windows, and roofs of the building, such as immigration, health care, care for the poor, environmental policy, etc- have lots of holes in them. The Democratic Party’s house may have more complete walls, windows, and roofs, but is built on the sand of a pro-abortion, and increasingly anti-Christian platform, esp. regarding Biblical sexual ethics. What is clear is that neither house would be able to withstand the winds and rains of a strong oncoming storm.

FINDING SOME SERENITY IN THE POST-ELECTION COVID WORLD

The Serenity Prayer above has been truly a “game-changer” in the spiritual life of so many completing the 12 Steps of recovery. The first stanza of the prayer is well known, but I have always believed that the most important part of the prayer is the last stanza: “That I may be reasonably happy in this life, and supremely happy with Him forever in the next.” We should not– and indeed cannot– expect to find supreme happiness in this world. Our broken politics are just one example of many. As God continues to allow our times to be tested, let us be sure to keep Jesus– the One Who Calms the Storm– as the focus of our lives. When you turn off the noise of the world to spend time with Him, you will never be disappointed! God’s blessings, Fr. Chris

La primera semana de noviembre de 2020 completé mi retiro sacerdotal anual de lunes a viernes. Después de haber enviado mi papeleta electoral varias semanas antes, tendría que esperar hasta que el retiro terminara para ver los resultados de las elecciones. Ciertamente tuve la tentación de romper el silencio del retiro para mirar los resultados. Pero por la gracia de Dios, la mayor parte de mí se dio cuenta de que realmente no quería interrumpir este bendecido tiempo que pasaba con el Señor con la contaminación conocida del mundo de los medios de comunicación. Estoy profundamente agradecido de que el Señor me bendijo de retirarme esta semana, de todas las otras semanas posibles. Mucha gente también me ha dicho lo afortunado que fui de estar lejos de la contención y la confusión, y de hecho estoy agradecido por sus oraciones! Como he predicado antes, la elección de 2020 no fue una elección fácil para un cristiano católico votar. Ni Donald Trump ni Joe Biden son candidatos "perfectos" desde la perspectiva católica. Cuando el Padre Joe Thomas vivía en la rectoría, él y yo ciertamente teníamos nuestras diferencias políticas, pero como adultos cristianos no dejamos que eso destruyera nuestra amistad. Usando una analogía del Padre Joe, piensen en la parábola del Evangelio de Lucas acerca de la construcción de una casa. En los últimos 50 años, la casa del Partido Republicano tiene una base construida sobre la roca sólida de pro-vida y la libertad religiosa. Sin embargo, las paredes, ventanas, y techos del edificio, tales como inmigración, atención médica, cuidado de los pobres, política ambiental, etc- tienen un montón de agujeros en ellos. La casa del Partido Demócrata puede tener paredes, ventanas y techos más completos, pero está construida sobre la arena de una plataforma pro-aborto, y cada vez más anti-cristiana, esp. con respecto a la ética sexual bíblica. Lo que está claro es que ninguna de las dos casas podría soportar los vientos y las lluvias de una fuerte tormenta.

ENCONTRANDO UN POCO DE SERENIDAD EN UN MUNDO POST-ELECTORAL Y DE COVID

La Oración de la Serenidad de arriba ha hecho un cambio muy grande en la vida espiritual de tantos que completan los “12 pasos a la Recuperación”. La primera estrofa de la oración es bien conocida, pero siempre he creído que la parte más importante de la oración es la última estrofa: "de modo que pueda ser razonablemente feliz en esta vida e increíblemente feliz Contigo en la siguiente. Amén.” No debemos, y de hecho no podemos esperar encontrar la felicidad suprema en este mundo. Nuestra política rota es sólo un ejemplo de muchos. A medida que Dios continúe permitiendo que nuestros tiempos sean probados, asegúremos de mantener a Jesús, aquel que calma la tormenta, como el centro de nuestras vidas. Fall Preaching Series 2020 “The Eucharist and the Virtues”

Over the last couple of months we have been discussing the virtues and how they fit into our lives. Even though it is not one of the seven key virtues, perseverance is one which gives us very practical help in living out the rest of the virtues. As we have mentioned, living the

Christian life of virtue is not an easy task. Perseverance goes along with Fortitude in that it helps us to keep trying even when we run into difficulties. We all have bad days and it can be very tempting to say “Today I’m feeling stressed out so I’m going to go home and have my favorite junk food.” But perseverance helps us to resist that temptation and try harder to not only work through the stress, but also not to let loose later. Every day has its own challenges, but it is part of living the life of virtue to persevere in spite of them, always with the aide of the Sacraments, especially Confession and the Holy Eucharist. The graces which the Sacraments give us help us to live all the virtues and to press forward even when we feel as though we have been swamped by adversity. God is by our side and He wants us to grow in trial so that we can love Him more perfectly each day. Durante los últimos dos meses hemos estado hablando sobre las virtudes y cómo encajan en nuestras vidas. Aunque no es una de las siete virtudes clave, la perseverancia es una que nos da una ayuda muy práctica para vivir el resto de las virtudes. Como hemos mencionado, vivir la vida cristiana en virtud no es una tarea fácil. La perseverancia va junto con la fortaleza en que nos ayuda a seguir intentándolo incluso cuando nos encontramos con dificultades. Todos tenemos días malos y puede ser muy tentador decir "Hoy me siento estresado, así que voy a ir a casa a comer mi comida chatarra favorita". Pero la perseverancia nos ayuda a resistir esa tentación y esforzarnos más para no sólo superar el estrés, sino también no soltarnos más tarde. Cada día tiene sus propios desafíos, pero parte de vivir la vida de la virtud es perseverar a pesar de ellos, siempre con la ayuda de los Sacramentos, especialmente la Confesión y la Santa Eucaristía. Las gracias que nos dan los Sacramentos nos ayudan a vivir todas las virtudes y a seguir adelante, incluso cuando sentimos que hemos sido inundados por la adversidad. Dios está a nuestro lado y quiere que crezcamos en las pruebas para que podamos amarlo más perfectamente cada día.
